We have an awesome opportunity to come together and make GREAT things happen. As we all know the devastation that Hurricane Harvey has left, we would like to do something to assist them. I know the numbers of those in need are many but with all of us pitching in together, we could help and make a difference for some.  Working together we can reach a larger number and have a greater impact.

GHS volleyball excites home crowd in win over P.K. Yonge

The Gainesville High School Hurricanes stay unbeaten after an impressive 3-1 win against the Blue Wave of P.K. Yonge in a volleyball classic on Thursday night at GHS.

Prior to the game, GHS head coach Marshay Greenlee stated her expectations.

“I expect them (PK Yonge) to give their full effort, work hard, and expect them to give an intense match,” she said.

Both teams did just that, with GHS starting the first set strong and immediately setting the tone. It seemed like the student section was getting louder each point. Gainesville went on to win the set, 25-21.

Everything was clicking for the Hurricanes (3-0), whether it was kills, aces, or assists.

The Hurricanes never let up as they took an early lead in the second set. However the Blue Wave did not give up until the very last whistle. After some outstanding serving from Sarah Berto and attacking from Tiffany Reccoppa, the Hurricanes won the second set, 24-26

P.K. Yonge knew they had to fight back and score points against a talented team while facing a rowdy crowd.

With this being the match set for the Hurricanes, P.K started the third set powerful. Junior Tirzah Parker led the way with kills while Senior Cameron Childs dominated getting saves. The Blue Wave went on to win 25-21 to make the match 2-1.

Assists ultimately helped the Hurricanes clinch the win, as GHS won the fourth set, 25-22.

Over the four sets, they had a total of 38 assists and Tiffany Recoppa ending the day with 20 kills.

Teamwork, communication, and fundamentals are what the Hurricanes relied on to win the match. GHS seems to have all the factors in place, which will lead to a great season.

The Lady Wave (2-3) came into this game looking to regain their momentum after back to back loses but came up short. There are still things to work on, but they are learning from their mistakes and improving.

“We need to stick together and have more communication,” said Blue Wave sophomore Taylor Doering. “We need to stop letting teams come back when we are in the lead. I think working on blocking a lot has really helped us improve and now we just need to tie it all together with our back row.”

The future is bright for both teams on their different roads to success.

Gainesville will host Forest (Ocala) on Tuesday, while P.K. Yonge will travel to Forest on Wednesday.

ThePrepZone.com Sports Report Presented by SunState Federal Credit Union

ThePrepZone.com

In case you missed it on Thursday afternoon, Mike Ridaught joined Pat Dooley & Jeff Cardozo on “The Tailgate” on WRUF-98.1 FM & 850 AM. Here are the things they discussed on ThePrepZone.com Sports Report Presented by SunState Federal Credit Union:

High school football showdown tonight at Citizen’s Field – Vanguard (Ocala) at Buchholz (Gainesville)
This is probably a match-up of the best team in Marion County against the best team in Alachua County. Both teams enter 1-0 on the season. Vanguard is ranked 6th in the state in Class 6A while Buchholz is receiving a vote in Class 7A. Buchholz won its fifth straight over Eastside last Friday, 44-14, but it could have been much worse. Buchholz had seven fumbles and lost five of them. Junior quarterback Cam Orth had a really good night. He threw five TD passes, was 11 of 14, for a total of 223 yards. Junior Isaiah Michel, caught two of those for 51 and 74 yards. UF commit Trent Whittemore also caught two TD passes from 23 and 7 yards

Vanguard’s pretty good on defense. They shut out Lakeland Kathleen, 38-0, last week. The Knights held the Red Devils to 139 yards of offense and recorded six sacks.

On offense Marquez Glover, who backed up current University of Miami quarterback N’Kosi Perry last season, threw for 459 yards with seven touchdowns and one interception in nine games as a junior. So he does have experience coming in. And it paid off last week. Glover accounted for all five of his team’s touchdowns and finished 16-of-24 for 224 yards and 4 TDs passing. He also ran for 40 yards on nine carries.

Vanguard has actually won four of the last five. Last year the Knights won 20-7 in Ocala. But that was the only win all season in which the Knights did not win by more than 23 points. Even though they lost some talent, they are really talented. Sophomore wide receiver Leonard Manuel, a former Tennessee commitment, is the No. 6 overall prospect nationally for the Class of 2020 according to the 24/7 recruiting website; up front, Miller Lewis is a 6-foot-4, 300-pound offensive lineman ranked 91st overall. He already has scholarship offers from Auburn, Florida, and Michigan, among others. Senior safety Avonta Crim has offers from Notre Dame, UCF and Louisville.Sunstate Logo

Which of these 0-1 Alachua County football teams has the best chance to get its first win this week?  Gainesville, P.K. Yonge, Santa Fe or Eastside?

Eastside will be at Citizen’s Field again and the opponent is a little easier than Buchholz. The Rams host Williston, which did not play last week. If you improve the most from Game 1 to Game 2 then it will benefit Eastside with a game under its belt. I do believe their quarterback Anthony Richardson gives them a chance to win because of his big-play capability. But I like Williston in this game. The Red Devils played Dunnellon tough in the kickoff classic. 6-foot-2 Junior QB C.J. Strange threw for nearly 1,500 yards a year ago. Senior running back Gerard Williams (5-8, 177) rushed for more than 1,000 yards in 2016 and has developed into “a true, vocal leader for them according to their coach Justin Wentworth. And then you mix in senior TE Albert Fuller who is 6-4, 240 and has offers from some D-1 schools. I just think Williston gets that first win which would be big for them because they have such a tough schedule.

Class 4A P.K. Yonge lost at Class 1A Wildwood, 30-2. Last year, Wildwood went 0-10. PK Yonge beat Wildwood by 22 last year. So that was a really nice win by the Wildcats and a really bad loss by the Blue Wave. But that was a head scratcher. Now P.K. Yonge travels to Keystone Heights, which beat Fernandina Beach last week. I look for the Blue Wave to drop to 0-2.

So that leaves Gainesville at Santa Fe as the easy pick primarily because we know that the winner of the GHS-Santa Fe game will win its first game. Last week, GHS lost at Columbia (Lake City), 52-34, and Santa Fe lost at Newberry, 45-13. Both teams played teams that I think have a good chance to make the postseason. Gainesville had trouble stopping the run but they did put up a lot of points. Luke Matthews, the son of Shane Matthews, finished the game 16 of 36 for 236 yards, with three TDs and two interceptions. He was also sacked three times. But I like Gainesville to right the ship.  GHS is a 21-point favorite according to Joe Pinkos.

Friday Radio Game of the Week – Madison County at Newberry. We’ll have ‘live’ audio coverage online at ThePrepZone.com beginning at 7 p.m.  This could have been a state semifinal game last year in the 1A state playoffs but Newberry lost in overtime at eventual state champion Pahokee in the opening round of the playoffs and then Madison County lost to Pahokee in the state semifinals. Newberry has moved up in classification to 3A. They are receiving votes in the state poll. They beat 4A Santa Fe handily last week. They had 254 yards rushing and they led 14-0 before Santa Fe picked up a first down. Six different Newberry players scored. The Panthers threw only three passes, but completed all three. One went for a touchdown. Last Friday, Class 1A Madison County, ranked second in the Associated Press Class 1A state rankings, rallied from a 27-6 deficit to stun Class 5A Wakulla (Crawfordville).

Madison County is ranked 9th in our regional rankings, while Newberry is receiving votes in the Class 3A state poll in The Prep Zone Power Poll.  Our radio coverage of the game will air on 92.1 FM & 1230 AM in Gainesville with Daniel Gillman (Play-by-play) and George Koziara (Color) calling the action.

Monday, August 28, Sonic Player-of-the-Game – Rocky DiBernardo (Oak Hall)

Sonic-logoOur Sonic Player-of-the-game for Monday, August 28, is Rocky DiBernardo of the Oak Hall (Gainesville) football team.

The sophomore made an impact in all three phases in Oak Hall’s 52-0 win against Florida School for the Deaf (St. Augustine).  His big plays early helped give the Eagles a 49-0 lead at the half.

DiBernardo had three catches for 79 yards and two touchdowns.  He also added three kick returns for an average of 20 yards per return.

Rocky DiBernardo 2017_Oak Hall

He helped the defense pitch a shutout.

DiBernardo finished with two fumble recoveries and an interception.

Oak Hall returns to action on Friday, September 8, when the Eagles host the Bronson Eagles.  The game will be broadcast online at ThePrepZone.com.

Every game The Prep Zone will recognize a Sonic Player-of-the-Game. The recipient receives a $10 gift card & certificate courtesy of Sonic Drive-In of Gainesville & Ocala.

The Prep Zone Power Poll fueled by Divine Power Wear – 2017 Football Poll #2

divine power wearMainland (Daytona Beach) moves to top spot in regional poll after Trinity Christian (Jacksonville) drops opening game

GAINESVILLE — One week into the 2017 high school football regular season, and already a change at the top of The Prep Zone Power Poll.

Four-time defending state champion Trinity Christian (Jacksonville) dropped a back-and-forth 24-21 decision to defending state champion and 4A #2 Cocoa. This dropped the Conquerors (0-1) from the #1 spot after last week’s preseason poll to 2nd this week.

The new #1 team is Mainland (Daytona Beach), which is ranked third in the Associated Press Class 6A state rankings.mainland

The Bucs (1-0) opened their 2017 season with a 24-0 blanking of DeLand. Mainland received four of the eight first-place votes this week and will host fifth-ranked Bartram Trail (St. Johns) this Friday night.

Trinity Christian received three first-place votes after the close loss to Cocoa. The Conquerors are back in action this Friday night at #18 Ribault (Jacksonville).

Receiving the other first-place vote this week is #3 Robert E. Lee (Jacksonville). The Generals (1-0) rallied to win a tough 20-16 opener against #8 Raines (Jacksonville) last week, and remains in the third spot.

Vanguard (Ocala) moves up a spot to #4 this week, replacing Bartram Trail. The Knights (1-0) easily dispatched of Kathleen (Lakeland), 38-0, to win their opener.  They will travel to Citizens Field to play 13th-ranked Buchholz (Gainesville) on Thursday night in a game that can be seen on ThePrepZone.com (LIVE VIDEO BROADCAST).

Bartram Trail rounds out the top five after losing a close 52-45 slugfest at Georgia AAAA defending state champion Cartersville in a game that was played on national TV. The Bears rallied from a 38-10 deficit to tie the game before Cartersville held on late for the win. Another tough test awaits Bartram Trail this week as they travel to Mainland.

Class 5A #5 Bolles (Jacksonville) is ranked sixth. The Bulldogs were off on opening week and will start life after Corky Rogers this Friday night at home against 6A Deltona.

Two-time defending 2A state champion University Christian (Jacksonville) is off to a 2-0 start already on the young season, and moved up a spot to #7. The Christians followed up a 44-14 win at Ben Lippen (SC) with a 42-14 home win over Providence (Jacksonville) last week.

Raines (Jacksonville) drops two spots to 8th after the close loss at Lee.

Madison County moves up from 10th to 9th after rallying from a 21-point deficit to win at Wakulla (Crawfordville), 28-27. The Cowboys (1-0) travel to RV Newberry (1-0) this Friday night.

Rouding out the top 10 is St. Augustine.

The Yellow Jackets (1-0) moved up one space and into the top 10 after a 31-14 triumph over then-#14 Baker County (Glen St. Mary). The victory avenged a Yellow Jackets loss at Baker County in the opening game a season ago.

New to the poll this week is Fleming Island (Orange Park). The Golden Eagles are tied for 14th with Clay (Green Cove Springs), which Fleming Island defeated on the road, 27-6. Clay falls eight spots from a week ago.

Ribault moves in at 18th after a 14-13 win at then-#19 Sandalwood (Jacksonville).

Class 8A Sandalwood (0-1) drops out from last week, as does South Sumter (Bushnell) (0-1), which dropped its opener 35-20 to Leesburg, and Trenton (1-0), which despite a 37-21 win at rival Chiefland, drops from 20th to receiving votes this week.

Fort White (1-0), which is receiving votes in the Class 3A state rankings, also enters the poll, at No. 20, after a 13-10 win over Suwannee (Live Oak).

The Prep Zone Power Poll ranks the top 20 high school football, basketball, baseball & softball teams (regardless of FHSAA classification) across 26 counties in North Central Florida (Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Citrus, Clay, Columbia, Dixie, Duval, Flagler, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Hernando, Jefferson, Lafayette, Lake, Levy, Madison, Marion, Nassau, Putnam, Sumter, St. Johns, Suwannee, Taylor, Union & Volusia counties). It is voted on weekly by sportswriters and sportscasters. It is fueled by Divine Power Wear.
