The Comeback… Cowboys ground War Eagles in dramatic fashion

This Friday night the Newberry Panthers will host the Madison County Cowboys in a match-up of unbeaten teams.  The game will air on 92.1 FM & 1230 AM in Gainesville, as well as 100.1 FM & 900 AM in Ocala.  You can also listen to the game online here.

Last Friday, Class 1A Madison County, ranked second in the Associated Press Class 1A state rankings, rallied from a 27-6 deficit to stun Class 5A Wakulla (Crawfordville).  Here is a recap of the game and this week’s week prediction from Rick Patrick (Greene Publishing, Inc.) of the Madison County Carrier.

There are some events that when they happen one simply knows they will live on as legend.

On Friday, Aug. 25, such an event took place. That is when the Madison County High School (MCHS) Cowboys traveled to Crawfordville, Fl., and battled back from a 27-6 deficit with 11 minutes left in the game to defeat the War Eagles of Wakulla County High School.

In a fashion which would easily rival any Hollywood script, the Cowboys managed to score three unanswered touchdowns in the waning moments of the ballgame to come out with a 28-27 victory.

The game began with MCHS taking the ball first after Wakulla won the coin toss and deferred to take the ball to open the second half. Madison gave up possession after going three-and-out.

However, on Wakulla’s first offensive possession, the Cowboys recovered a fumble at mid-field. The Cowboys moved the ball down the field and capped off the scoring drive with an 10-yard touchdown pass to Darius Johnson for the Cowboys’ first touchdown.

After a missed PAT, the score was 6-0 in MCHS’s favor. Wakulla responded by quickly driving down the field as a rainstorm pelted the field and the players upon it.

The War Eagles scored their first touchdown of the evening and the score was 7-6 in the early moments of the second quarter. On their next possession, the Cowboys turned the ball over, giving the War Eagles great field position on the Cowboys’ 32-yard-line.

The War Eagles wasted no time taking advantage of the Cowboys’ turnover and scored their second touchdown of the half.

The Cowboys’ next possession stalled, and Wakulla took over. The War Eagles again quickly moved down the field to the MCHS 4-yard line. The War Eagles punched the ball across the goal line and scored another touchdown. The Cowboys managed to block the PAT and the score was now 20-6, in favor of the War Eagles.

A big kickoff return, followed by a big run by Cowboy quarterback, Tre Adams moved the ball to the Wakulla 18-yard-line. An interception in the end zone ended the Cowboys’ drive, and the half ended with the War Eagles ahead of the Cowboys, 20-6.

The second half began with Wakulla receiving the kickoff. During their opening drive of the second half, Wakulla fumbled, and the Cowboys took over on offense.

The Cowboys moved the ball to the Wakulla 26 before the drive stalled. Neither team was able to sustain a drive, and the quarter ended with another turnover from Madison County, giving the War Eagles the ball at the Madison 38-yard-line.

Wakulla moved the ball within field goal range, and the War Eagle kicker drilled a 25-yard field goal through the uprights. However, a roughing the kicker penalty gave Wakulla a first down and another chance to put the ball into the end zone.

One standing “rule” in football is that a team should never take points off the scoreboard. That is just what Wakulla decided to do when they decided to forego the field goal and go for the touchdown at that point. The gamble paid off as Wakulla scored another touchdown with just over 11 minutes left in the game.

With the score 27-6, things looked dim for the visiting Cowboys.

On the Cowboys’ next possession, events turned scary when star running back, Teryon Henderson, was injured and carried off the field on a stretcher. Henderson was transported to a local hospital where he was diagnosed with severely bruised ribs. Fortunately, his injuries were no more serious. Doctors said he would be very sore for several days, but should make a full recovery.

When play resumed, Cowboy running back, Derrick Staten moved the ball inside the Wakulla 10-yard-line to give the Cowboys a first and goal. The Cowboys put the ball into the end zone and made a two-point conversion to bring the score to 27-14 with 8:47 left in the game.

On Wakulla’s next possession, the Cowboy defense forced a fumble, which was run into the end zone for another Cowboy touchdown. The following two-point conversion was good, and the score now was 27-22, with the War Eagles still in the lead.

The following Wakulla drive stalled, and the Cowboys took over at their own 19-yard-line with just over two minutes left in the game. The Cowboys began moving the ball methodically down the field until they were on the Wakulla 15-yard-line with just 20 ticks of the clock remaining.

The Cowboys’ drive seemed to stall at that point. Then it was fourth down with 7.7 seconds left to go. Cowboy quarterback, Tre Adams lined up in a shotgun formation and called for the ball. Adams rolled to his right, shook off a War Eagle defender, stopped and planted his feet before throwing an arcing pass across the field into the hands of Derrick Staten; who was quarantined in the left rear corner of the end zone.

The touchdown gave the Cowboys a 28-27 victory that will be remembered for years to come.

At the end of the game, Coach Coe gathered his team together as he usually does.

“That right there is why you don’t quit in life,” said Coe. “I have never, ever, ever, been prouder of a group of fellows.”

Tre Adams went 10 for 17 with 146 yards through the air, with two touchdowns and one interception. Derrick Staten had 100 yards rushing on 10 attempts and one rushing touchdown. Staten also had five pass receptions for 73 yards and one touchdown catch.

Players of the week for the Cowboys were: Darryln Brooks on special teams, Derrick Staten on offense and Johnathon Alexander on defense. Zane Herring was named Offensive “Hog” of the Week and Cameron Brown was named the Defensive “Hog” of the Week.

Next on the schedule for the Cowboys will be Newberry High School. The Panthers (1-0) are coming off a 45-13 victory over Santa Fe High School (Alachua). The game will take place on Friday, Sept. 1, at Newberry. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.

Madison County vs. Newberry preview:  The Madison County High School Cowboys are coming off a dramatic win against the War Eagles of Wakulla High School. It is uncertain if Cowboy running back Teryon Henderson will be back from a rib injury to play against Newberry. The Cowboys proved with Derrick Staten to still have a strong rushing attack. Turnovers were a problem for the Cowboys while playing in the rain in Crawfordville, a problem the Cowboys’ Head Coach Mike Coe will surely address. Newberry was a playoff team last year, and they may be a tough contender this year as well. I think, in the end, the Cowboys will prevail. Rick’s Pick: Madison County

Get the brooms out!

Emotions were running high for P.K. Yonge’s varsity volleyball team as they were set to take on their first home game of the season against their rival, the St. Francis Wolves. After a highly anticipated start for their first home game, the Lady Wave came on strong with a lot of momentum and never let up. The large crowd filled the stands to cheer on this year’s team.

There was a lot of excitement going into this game, especially for the three seniors, Jayda Teasley, Riley Holloway, and Cameron Childs. These leaders were stepping into their senior season, hoping to come out victorious.

P.K. started the game on a 9-3 run led by the outstanding serving from the Wave. Sophomore Amara Barnett started the game serving and got a quick ace. They finished the first set to win 25-16. Everyone could tell that the Blue Wave players were excited to be playing again. The momentum was already on the Blue Wave side, as the home crowd started to get loud.

The Blue Wave maintained their momentum after break and only got better. The stars Jayda Teasley, Tirzah Parker, and Bailey Parker all dominated the stat sheet, all with 6 kills going into the third set. Senior Cameron Childs stated that they gained confidence when the crowd showed energy which really helped them succeed.

The fans were chanting on the game’s points, holding up posters, and jumping up everytime P.K scored. The Lady Wave went on to win the second set, 25-17. This was all starting to look like the girls could run away with the match at that point.

It seemed as if the Blue Wave couldn’t be stopped, taking control of the third set up 20-9. However, St. Francis would not let up. They gave it their everything, scoring six straight points to make it 20-15. Although St. Francis almost made a comeback, P.K snapped out of their cold streak and started scoring points. One of the biggest factors in the third set was excellent communication on the court with little errors. The Blue Wave went on to win, 25-19.

P.K had many different players step up throughout the game. Cameron Childs finished the game with six aces, while Jayda Teasley, Bailey Parker, And Tirzah Parker recorded a total of 26 kills and only two errors.

Waverunner reporter Andrew Barton talked with head coach Ziva Blackmon about the team’s improvements from the preseason.

“We have worked hard with our setter-hitter connection and to include our middles as much as we can…, hitting wise is our main focus,” she said.

Blue Wave fans should be excited for a fun, and much improved season.

Here’s a look at how all of the regionally-ranked football teams fared in Week #1. A total of seven top 20 teams lost in The Prep Zone Power Poll, including four teams in the top 10. However, only one of those could be considered an upset. The next regional ranking will be released on Tuesday, August 29.

RADIO RECAP
RADIO RECAP

We opened up our high school football radio coverage (complete schedule) on Florida Sports Talk with a Marion County showdown between teams who made the postseason last year in their respective classes.

This was supposed to be a game between former Trinity Catholic football coach John Brantley and his former school. Brantley helped lead the Celtics to its second state title in 2010 and finished his career at Trinity Catholic with an overall record of 67-20. They were district champions every year, going 26-0 in league play — a Marion County record.

Brantley took the head coaching job at Belleview last year and helped lead the Rattlers to their first state playoff game in 10 years. However, Brantley stepped down as head coach in the spring.

Mike Kelly took over for John Brantley as head coach at Belleview, and while his debut was marred by mistakes on Friday night, the Class 5A Rattlers made enough big plays to come away with a 19-5 win against the 3A Celtics. Despite the fact that the Celtics had more turnovers than points, Belleview kept the visitors in the game with 16 penalties.

However, Belleview (1-0) made three big plays that turned the game.

  • Junior running back John Heflin’s 57-yard TD run with 10:36 to play in the second quarter gave the Rattlers an early 6-0 lead (Trinity Catholic’s Robert Rhem blocked the extra point). The score proved to be the winning points.
  • Later in the second quarter, junior quarterback Corey Wilsher’s 79-yard TD pass, which was caught in stride by senior Malik Johnson, gave the Rattlers a 13-0 lead with 5:04 to play in the second quarter.
  • Kelly is a ‘defensive guy’ so he had to be pleased that his team kept the Celtics out of the end zone all night. The biggest defensive play likely came in the third quarter when the Celtics took advantage of a short field and drove inside the 10-yard line down 13-2. They picked up a first-and-goal at the five, but on the next play the Celtics fumbled and senior Daquan Lee recovered.

Trinity Catholic also had a 78-yard punt return for a touchdown called back because of penalty. So, the Celtics (0-1) certainly had their chances.

With the FHSAA’s new playoff format this season, this was a good early season test in Marion County. It was an opportunity to get a good quality win that could mean something by season’s end. But even in defeat, every game counts.

Both teams were playoff teams a season ago. Meanwhile the Celtics advanced to the Class 3A state playoffs, which marked their 14th straight appearance in the postseason.

NEXT RADIO BROADCAST: Class 1A Madison County at Class 3A Newberry
WHEN: Friday, September 1 at 7:30 p.m. (Pregame coverage at 7 p.m.)
WHERE: 92.1 FM & 1230 AM in Gainesville and 100.1 FM & 900 AM in Ocala

Both teams will enter the game with 1-0 records after season-opening wins. The Panthers defeated Santa Fe (Alachua), 45-13, while Madison County edged Class 5A Wakulla (Crawfordville), 28-27.

This could have been a state semifinal match-up in last year’s 1A state playoffs but Newberry lost in the opening round to eventual state champion Pahokee, 35-34 in overtime, while Madison County lost at Pahokee, 21-19, in the state semifinals.

The Prep Zone Power Poll fueled by Divine Power Wear – 2017 Football Poll #1 (PRESEASON)

divine power wearFour-time defending state champion Trinity Christian (Jacksonville) on top of preseason regional rankings

GAINESVILLE – They’ve won four consecutive state titles.

No Florida team in the history of high school football has ever won five straight, but Trinity Christian (Jacksonville) will be looking for a 5-peat with a 16-game postseason win streak.

The Conquerors begin the season where they left off in The Prep Zone Power Poll at No. 1.

The defending 3A state champion Conquerors, who move up to Class 5A this season, were unanimous and received all eight first-place votes.Trinity Christian

Mainland (Daytona Beach) is ranked second.

Last year, the Bucs were the top-ranked team in the regional rankings from Week #1 to the playoffs, but they lost to eventual state champion Miami Carol City in the Class 6A state semifinals and finished fourth overall.

They were a unanimous selection as the No. 2 team.

In the preseason Associated Press state football rankings, Trinity Christian is ranked second in Class 5A, while Mainland is ranked 4th in 6A.

Lee (Jacksonville), which advanced to its first playoff since 1996 and went all the way to the 7A state semifinals, is ranked third.

The Generals, ranked 7th in 7A, defeated Leon (Tallahassee), Columbia (Lake City), and Bartram Trail (St. Johns) along the way before a season-ending loss to current 7A #2 Plant (Tampa).

Bartram Trail (St. Johns) is fourth.

The Bears’ season ended last year in 61-59 shootout against Bartram Trail. The Bears scored two TD’s in the final four minutes.

Rounding out the top five is Vanguard (Ocala).

The 6A-District 5 champions lost late to Lake Gibson (Lakeland), 14-13, in the 6A regional finals, narrowly missing a state semifinal appearance.

Raines (Jacksonville), a state title contender in Class 4A now that perennial power and former district rival Bolles (Jacksonville) has moved up to 5A, leads off the second five at No. 6.

The Vikings are currently ranked third in the state in Class 4A behind Booker T. Washington (Jacksonville) and defending state champion Cocoa.

Clay (Green Cove Springs) is ranked seventh, defending 2A state champion University Christian (Jacksonville) and 4A state runner-up Bolles are tied for eighth, and Class 1A state semifinalist Madison County rounds out the top 10.

The Prep Zone Power Poll ranks the top 20 high school football, basketball, baseball & softball teams (regardless of FHSAA classification) across 26 counties in North Central Florida (Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Citrus, Clay, Columbia, Dixie, Duval, Flagler, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Hernando, Jefferson, Lafayette, Lake, Levy, Madison, Marion, Nassau, Putnam, Sumter, St. Johns, Suwannee, Taylor, Union & Volusia counties).
