The Prep Zone Power Poll fueled by Divine Power Wear – 2017 Football Poll #3

divine power wearTrinity Christian (Jacksonville) back on top of regional rankings

GAINESVILLE — Another week and another change at the top of The Prep Zone Power Poll.

Trinity Christian (Jacksonville) was the #1 team in the preseason regional rankings, but dropped to 2nd after an opening week loss to defending 4A state champion Cocoa. But after a win at then-#18 Ribault last week the Conquerors received seven of the eight first-place votes and are back on top of this week’s rankings.

Last week’s top-ranked team, Mainland (Daytona Beach), drops four spots to #5 after their 30-game home regular season winning streak was snapped by #3 Bartram Trail (St. Johns), 35-24, in a game that was moved to Labor Day due to weather issues. The Bears, who dropped their opening week game at nationally-ranked Cartersville (GA), received the other first-place vote this week.

Trinity ChristianMoving up to 2nd this week is Robert E. Lee (Jacksonville). The Generals improved to 2-0 by blasting Westside (Jacksonville) 49-7.

Vanguard (Ocala) remains 4th after the Knights improved to 2-0 with a wild 44-33 win at then-#13 Buchholz (Gainesville) last Thursday.

Three Jacksonville schools – Bolles, University Christian, and Raines remain 6th, 7th, and 8th, respectively.

Bolles picked up their first win of the post-Corky Rogers era as Wayne Belger won his first game as Bulldogs coach 35-14 over Deltona in a game that was called late in the third quarter due to lightning.

Remaining ninth this week is Madison County, which cruised 47-14 on the road at 3A Newberry.

Columbia (Lake City) moves up a spot into the top 10 after a 48-0 blanking at rival Suwannee (Live Oak). The Tigers (2-0) replace St. Augustine, who despite a 65-14 romp of city rival Menendez dropped one spot to 11th this week.

New to the poll this week is Spruce Creek (Port Orange), which is No. 18 after beating its first two opponents by a combined 105-0. The Hawks replace Ribault, which drops out after the loss to Trinity Christian.

The Prep Zone Power Poll ranks the top 20 high school football, basketball, baseball & softball teams (regardless of FHSAA classification) across 26 counties in North Central Florida (Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Citrus, Clay, Columbia, Dixie, Duval, Flagler, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Hernando, Jefferson, Lafayette, Lake, Levy, Madison, Marion, Nassau, Putnam, Sumter, St. Johns, Suwannee, Taylor, Union & Volusia counties). It is voted on weekly by sportswriters and sportscasters. It is fueled by Divine Power Wear.

Uh-oh, look who’s 0-2

Football on FieldYou’ve probably heard the saying, “one game does not a season make.”

But what about two? Or three?

Even with the new FHSAA playoff system, you don’t want to start out the high school football season 0-3. Here are four area playoff teams from last year who are 0-2 heading into Thursday night’s games.

North Marion (Citra) – The Colts have been to the playoffs every year since 1999. However, they’ve lost back-to-back games to begin the season to Rickards (Tallahassee) and Forest (Ocala) and they lost by double-digits in both games. Former NFL player and head coach Willie Offord noted at the beginning of the season that he had a young football team. His Colts will have to grow up in a hurry. Following an 0-2 start, the Class 5A Colts now get an undefeated and state-ranked rival on the road this week. Class 6A No. 5 Vanguard (Ocala) is 2-0 following a win at 7A Buchholz (Gainesville) last week. The tough schedule, which will also include Gainesville, and unbeatens Belleview and Dunnellon, will benefit North Marion. But at some point you have to win.

South Sumter (Bushnell) – The Raiders are off to a surprising 0-2 start following a run all the way to the Class 4A state semifinals last year. They lost at home to 6A Leesburg, 35-20, to begin the season. Last week South Sumter was run all over at Nature Coast (Brooksville), 33-7. This week they get 4A Trenton (1-1). Then they’ve got North Marion which could be 0-3.

Sandalwood (Jacksonville) – The Class 8A Saints lost a heart-breaker to 5A Ribault (Jacksonville), 14-13, in Week #1. Last week they lost at 7A Fleming Island (Orange Park), 17-6. They get another 7A team this week at home in Leon (Tallahassee), and the Lions are also coming in 0-2. That makes it a must-win game for the Saints, whose next two games are against undefeated teams Spruce Creek (Port Orange) and Flagler Palm Coast in 8A-District 1. Then they go to Raines (Jacksonville).

Santa Fe (Alachua) – Cliff Harrell’s team was able to sneak into the playoffs last year with a .500 record. But in 2017, the young Raiders are looking at the possibility of an 0-3 start with Thursday night’s game at Fort White, which is receiving votes in the AP Class 3A state rankings. With games still to play against 6A Forest (Ocala) and 7A Buchholz (Gainesville), plus a trip to Trinity Catholic (Ocala), the margin for error is getting slimmer.

Of the four, only Sandalwood is favored to win according to pigskin forecaster Joe Pinkos.

Joe Pinkos’ 2017 Weekly Game Forecast for Week 3

joepinkosgameforecastJoe Pinkos’ Power Ratings are calculated by a formula based on strength of opposition and margin of victory with greater weight given to recent games. The forecasted margin of victory for each game is determined by subtracting the power rating of the lower-rated team from the power rating of its higher-rated opponent.

Game forecasts are sorted by classification of favorite and listed alphabetically. The underdog’s classification is noted for inter-classification games. Teams in The Prep Zone’s coverage area are in bold.

There could be a new No. 1 in the regional football rankings later this week.

On Monday night, the top-ranked team in The Prep Zone Power Poll lost for the second consecutive week. Mainland (Daytona Beach), which had its game on Friday moved to Labor Day due to weather, had its 30-game home winning streak snapped against No. 5 Bartram Trail (St. Johns), 35-24.

The Bucs’ (1-1) stay at the top could be brief.

Last week, previous No. 1 Trinity Christian (Jacksonville), now in 5A, lost at defending 4A champion Cocoa, 24-21. The No. 2 Conquerors (1-1), the four-time defending 3A state champion, bounced back to beat 5A Ribault (Jacksonville) on the road, 24-8. They could move back to No. 1.

Former Gator OJ Small’s team is ranked third and could garner some first-place votes. Robert E. Lee (Jacksonville) is 2-0 with a win against Raines (Jacksonville). The Generals lost in the state semifinals last year.

Vanguard (Ocala) looked good in its win at 7A Buchholz (Gainesville). The Knights improved to 2-0 following an impressive win at 7A Buchholz (Gainesville).

Then there’s the Bears, who are undefeated in the Sunshine State following the upset win at Mainland. Bartram Trail lost a 52-45 slugfest at Georgia AAAA defending state champion Cartersville.

Here’s a look at how all of the regionally-ranked football teams fared in Week #2. Only three teams in The Prep Zone Power Poll lost, but that was against other ranked teams.  The next regional ranking will be released on Wednesday, September 6.

The Prep Zone Power Poll ranks the top 20 high school football, basketball, baseball & softball teams (regardless of FHSAA classification) across 26 counties in North Central Florida (Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Citrus, Clay, Columbia, Dixie, Duval, Flagler, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Hernando, Jefferson, Lafayette, Lake, Levy, Madison, Marion, Nassau, Putnam, Sumter, St. Johns, Suwannee, Taylor, Union & Volusia counties). It is voted on weekly by sportswriters and sportscasters. It is fueled by Divine Power Wear.
