The Prep Zone Power Poll powered by Anytime Fitness of Gainesville – 2019 Football Poll #14 (FINAL)

Madison County finishes on top of final regional all-classification rankings after capturing third consecutive 1A state title

GAINESVILLE — The 2019 high school football season is over, and the final votes have been tablulated.

There’s a new team which finishes the season at the top of The Prep Zone Power Poll.

But Madison County shouldn’t be a stranger to anyone.  The Cowboys (12-2) captured their third consecutive 1A state title, blasting Blountstown 70-35 in the state championship game at Gene Cox Stadium in Tallahassee.

The Tigers trailed early in the 2nd quarter, 21-14, but behind seven total touchdowns by Vinsonta Allen rallied to pull away in the second half.

Madison County had to work in the state semifinals, scoring in the final minute to sneak past Pahokee, 37-36, at Boot Hill.

The Cowboys received seven of the nine first-place votes to move up one spot from the previous poll and finish as the #1 team for 2019 in the all-classification regional rankings.

Finishing 2nd is Bartram Trail (St. Johns), which received the other two first-place votes.

The Bears (11-1), who were ranked #1 in the previous five polls, finished the regular season undefeated and won the District 1-8A title. Bartram Trail was eliminated in the regional semifinals 34-13 by Apopka, which advanced to the 8A state title game before losing in the closing seconds, 21-20, to Columbus (Miami) in Daytona Beach last week.

Coming in third is 4A state runner-up Bolles (Jacksonville).

The Bulldogs (11-2) move up four spots in this final rankings after losing a heartbreaker, 25-21, to Booker T. Washington (Miami) in the state title game last week in Daytona Beach.

Bolles dropped it’s opening game to #8 University Christian (Jacksonville), then won its next 11 games to advance to its first state championship game appearance since legendary coach Corky Rogers’ final game in 2016 at Camping World Stadium against Cocoa.

Against Booker T. Washington, Bolles led the entire game, including 21-10 with five minutes left, before BTW rallied for two touchdowns in three minutes to stun the ‘Dogs.

This was the Bulldogs’ fourth straight loss to BTW in a state title game.

Moving up one spot to finish 4th is Vanguard (Ocala).

The Knights (9-3) knocked off #6 North Marion (Citra) 14-6 in a Region 2-5A semifinal, their second win against the Colts in 2019, before losing 37-14 at eventual 5A state runner-up Jones (Orlando) in the regional final round.

Fleming Island (Orange Park) rounds out the top five.

The Golden Eagles (10-1) were one of only two teams, along with Bartram Trail, to finish the regular season win an unbeaten record and they won the District 2-7A championship.

Fleming Island saw the season come to an end with 47-28 loss at Niceville in the second round of the 7A playoffs. The Golden Eagles dropped two spots from the previous poll.

North Marion drops two spots and finishes just outside of the top five.

The Colts (9-3) won their 5A regional quarterfinal game 48-9 at #10 Dunnellon before having their season come to an end in the second round in another all-Marion County matchup against Vanguard.

Finishing 7th is Robert E. Lee (Jacksonville).

The Generals (9-4) move up two spots in the final poll after beating St. Augustine and #9 Columbia (Lake City) before being eliminated in the Region 1-6A final in the Panhandle against eventual state runner-up Escambia (Pensacola).

University Christian (Jacksonville) stays put and finishes in the 8th spot.

The Christians (11-2) missed out on a state championship game appearance for the 2nd straight year as they lost 20-7 at eventual state runner-up Victory Christian (Lakeland) in the state semifinals.

Columbia finishes in the 9th spot.

The Tigers (9-4) were the top-ranked team for seven weeks after a 6-0 start, but dropped four of their last six games, including two losses to Lee.

Columbia was knocked out of the 6A playoffs in the second round with a 6-3 double overtime loss in a defensive slugfest against the Generals. The Tigers drop three slots from the previous poll but finishes in the top 10.

Rounding out the top 10 is Dunnellon.

The Tigers (9-2) beat county rivals Vanguard and North Marion during the regular season to clinch the District 6-5A title. But Dunnellon was trounced in a rematch against North Marion in the 5A region quarterfinals.

Lake Minneola, which advanced to the Region 2-6A final, is up four spots in the final poll and in a tie for 13th with Trinity Catholic (Ocala).

The only team to move into the final poll this week is Bradford (Starke).

The Tornadoes end up 18th as they won at Gadsden County (Havana) and then-#20 West Nassau (Callahan) before a season-ending 16-6 loss at eventual state runner-up #3 Bolles in the Region 1-4A final.

West Nassau is the only team to drop out from the previous rankings.

The Prep Zone Power Poll ranks the top 20 high school football, basketball, baseball & softball teams (regardless of FHSAA classification) across 26 counties in North Florida (Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Citrus, Clay, Columbia, Dixie, Duval, Flagler, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Hernando, Jefferson, Lafayette, Lake, Levy, Madison, Marion, Nassau, Putnam, Sumter, St. Johns, Suwannee, Taylor, Union & Volusia counties). The Prep Zone Power Poll powered by Anytime Fitness – 2019-20 Boys Basketball Poll #1

Andrew Jackson (Jacksonville) edges Paxon (Jacksonville) for top spot in first regional all-classification rankings of the season

GAINESVILLE – Last year a total of nine boys basketball teams from The Prep Zone’s coverage area advanced to the FHSAA Boys Basketball state championships in Lakeland.

One of those teams, Andrew Jackson (Jacksonville), begins on top of the all-classification regional rankings in the first poll of 2019-20.

In 2018-19 the Tigers, who finished 25-7, won 20 of their last 23 games and advanced to the Class 5A state semifinals for the first time since 2002.

They knocked off Tampa Catholic in the state semifinals before being beaten by nationally-ranked University (Fort Lauderdale) in the state title game.

Through last week, Jackson (3-0), which is ranked 5th in the state in Class 3A by FABC & Source Hoops, has cruised to an undefeated start with wins against Mainland (Daytona Beach), at Baker County (Glen St. Mary), and vs. Potter’s House Christian (Jacksonville) by an average margin of victory of 19 points despite losing five seniors.

Top-200 national prospect Naseem Khaalid, who averaged 18.8 points and 7.4 rebounds as a sophomore, is back after appearing in just seven games last season.

The Tigers received four of the seven first-place votes and narrowly edged Paxon (Jacksonville) in total voting points, 131-130, for the top spot.

The 2nd-ranked Golden Eagles, who went 26-4 last season, advanced to the state semifinals for the first time since their only boys’ basketball state title in 1965. They lost to eventual 6A state runner-up Lakewood (St. Petersburg) in the semifinals.

UCF-bound Isaiah Adams, the 2018-19 All-First Coast player of the year, returns after averaging 19.6 points and 10.8 rebounds last season
Paxon, which received one first-place vote, got off to a 7-0 start this season before falling to receiving votes West Nassau (Callahan), 66-53, in the Fortegra Invitational.

They have wins at current No. 7 Robert E. Lee (Jacksonville) and vs. No. 9 Bolles (Jacksonville) at the Dominic Allmond Memorial Shootout. The Eagles (7-1) have been ranked as high as 9th overall in Florida by MaxPreps and are currently ranked 2nd in the state in Class 4A by FABC & Source Hoops.

Another Jacksonville school, Providence, is ranked third.

The Stallions (7-1), who dropped down to 3A this season, lost at P.K. Yonge (Gainesville) in the first round of the 4A state playoffs last season to finish 23-5.

They have wins this season at receiving votes North Florida Educational Institute (Jacksonville) and vs. receiving votes West Nassau (51-50 to win the Fortegra Invitational). Their only loss was to West Nassau, 72-69, at the Dom Almond Classic.

Another state semifinalist from last season, The Villages, is ranked fourth.

The Class 4A Buffalo (6-0) finished 23-8 last season, falling to eventual state champion and nationally-ranked University (Fort Lauderdale) in the 5A state semifinals. The Villages is ranked 10th in the 4A state rankings.

Rounding out the top five is Columbia (Lake City), which also received a first-place vote.

It was a banner year for the Tigers last season, who advanced to their first regional final in 19 years. Columbia (5-0), which drops to 6A this season, lost at home to Crestview in last year’s 7A Region Final.

Defending 1A state champion Madison County is ranked 6th.

The Cowboys, who finished 26-3 last season, knocked off Hawthorne in the Region 4-1A final for the second straight year to advance back to Lakeland.

They rallied from a double-digit deficit in the first half to defeat defending 1A state champion Wildwood, 62-60 in overtime, in the state title game to win both the 1A football and boys basketball state championship.

Madison County (3-0) also received one first-place vote.

Class 5A Lee (7-1), Wildwood (5-0), Bolles (5-1), and unbeaten Forest (Ocala) round out the top 10.

The 10th-ranked Wildcats, who finished 18-8 but did not make the playoffs after losing to Columbia in the 7A-District 4 semifinals, have five wins by 23 or more points, including a 23-point win against receiving votes vs. Eastside (Gainesville) at the Tim Brinkley Memorial Classic.

The Prep Zone Power Poll ranks the top 20 high school football, basketball, baseball & softball teams (regardless of FHSAA classification) across 26 counties in North Florida (Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Citrus, Clay, Columbia, Dixie, Duval, Flagler, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Hernando, Jefferson, Lafayette, Lake, Levy, Madison, Marion, Nassau, Putnam, Sumter, St. Johns, Suwannee, Taylor, Union & Volusia counties). The Prep Zone Power Poll powered by Anytime Fitness – 2019-20 Girls Basketball Poll #1

Class 7A state semifinalist Father Lopez (Daytona Beach) leads off at No. 1 in the first all-classification regional rankings of 2019-20

GAINESVILLE – The top-ranked girls basketball team in The Prep Zone Power Poll resides in Volusia County.

Father Lopez (Daytona Beach), which received five of the eight first-place votes, is the No. 1 team in the first all-classification regional rankings of the season.

The Green Wave, which dropped down to Class 3A, cruised to an 8-0 start through last week’s games. Their closest margin of victory was 10 points, which earned the No. 13 overall ranking in the state by MaxPreps.

They boast two D-I post players in Texas Tech signee Khadija Faye and Quinnipiac signee Tiera White.

Sandalwood (Jacksonville), which received two first-place votes, is ranked second.

The Lady Saints (6-1), which went 20-7 and lost in last year’s 9A Region Final, opened this season with six straight wins before suffering its only loss to Southeast (Bradenton) by four at the Lakewood Classic. They will be led by Ole Miss signee Caitlin McGee and Seton Hall signee Amari Wright.

Another Jacksonville school residing in Duval County, one of six in the top 10, is Raines.

The Vikings, who finished 27-5 and advanced to last year’s 5A state semifinals, are ranked third in The Prep Zone Power Poll. Raines (9-1) returns a lot of talent from last year’s team, including the backcourt duo of Nyla Allen and Ahliah Brown, whom the Florida Times-Union in Jacksonville noted “might be the best in the Gateway Conference.”

Bolles (Jacksonville), which received the other first-place vote, is fourth.

The Bulldogs (6-1), who drop down to 4A, lost at Raines in the second round of the 5A state playoffs last year.  Shekinah Sanders returns for her senior season after averaging 16.7 points and seven rebounds per game for the Lady ‘Dogs in earning All-First Coast honors.

Middleburg rounds out the top five.

The Broncos (5-1), who finished 21-7 last year, return Seton Hall-bound senior Britany Range and junior Skylar Baltezegar, in what the Florida Times-Union noted “should be one of Northeast Florida’s most formidable frontcourt combinations.”

Ribault (Jacksonville) is sixth, followed by Wildwood, defending 1A state champion Trenton, University Christian (Jacksonville), and Bishop Kenny (Jacksonville) in the top 10.

Nease (Ponte Vedra), which went wire-to-wire as the top team in last year’s power poll, is ranked 14th. The Panthers (30-2) advanced to the 7A state semifinals for the first time since winning the 5A state championship 20 years ago.

However, Nease (2-2 after the first two weeks of the season) graduated four Division I-bound starters from that team, including Miss Basketball winner Camille Hobby at center.

The Prep Zone Power Poll ranks the top 20 high school football, basketball, baseball & softball teams (regardless of FHSAA classification) across 26 counties in North Florida (Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Citrus, Clay, Columbia, Dixie, Duval, Flagler, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Hernando, Jefferson, Lafayette, Lake, Levy, Madison, Marion, Nassau, Putnam, Sumter, St. Johns, Suwannee, Taylor, Union & Volusia counties). It is voted on weekly by sportswriters and sportscasters and it is powered by Anytime Fitness of Gainesville.
