The Prep Zone Power Poll fueled by Divine Power Wear – 2017 Football Poll #4

divine power wearLittle change in the top five after Hurricane Irma wreaks havoc on regional football schedule

GAINESVILLE — Hurricane Irma came and went through the entire state of Florida and caused much schedule shuffling for high school football in week three for the teams in the regional football rankings.

All games, if they were played, were played last Thursday, with no games on Friday as the area prepared for Irma.

There is a slight change in the top five of the poll this week, but the top team remains the same despite not even having to take the field last week.

Trinity Christian (Jacksonville) received five of the six first-place votes after a forfeit win in their District 4-5A opener at Terry Parker (Jacksonville), to stay on top of The Prep Zone Power Poll.Trinity Christian

The Braves forfeited the morning of the game to start getting prepared for Irma.

The Conquerors (2-1) have a district showdown coming up tonight in one of the few Friday night games in the area as they will host #8 Bolles (Jacksonville).

Bartram Trail (St. Johns) moves up a spot to second this week and received the other first-place vote after cruising past then-#17 Clay (Green Cove Springs), 49-28. The Bears (2-1) have a bye this week before a showdown next Friday with St. Johns County rival #11 St. Augustine.

The Yellow Jackets’ game at #12 Ponte Vedra was called off due to the hurricane, but may be played later in the season.

Despite improving to 3-0 with a 35-20 win over Mandarin (Jacksonville), Robert E. Lee (Jacksonville) drops to third. The Generals have a District 2-7A showdown with #6 Columbia (Lake City), with the game being played next Tuesday, September 19.

Vanguard (Ocala) remains 4th after blanking county rival North Marion (Citra) 45-0. It was the first time the Colts (0-3) had been shutout since 2004.  The Knights (3-0) have a bye this week as their game at Lakewood (St. Petersburg) was called off due to Irma.

Rounding out the top five once again this week is Mainland (Daytona Beach).

The Bucs (1-1) saw their game against Treasure Coast (Port St. Lucie) canceled a week ago, and this week’s District 13-6A opener against Pine Ridge (Deltona) has been postponed but will be made up.

Columbia is the big mover this week, up four sports to sixth after a 42-7 pasting of Buchholz (Gainesville). The Tigers (3-0) have that huge district showdown in Jacksonville against Lee on Tuesday.

Raines (Jacksonville) remains seventh after beating Ed White (Jacksonville) 28-7. The Vikings (2-1) are off this week.

Bolles (Jacksonville) drops to eighth after rallying from an early 14-0 deficit for a 34-28 win at First Coast (Jacksonville). The Bulldogs (2-0) travel to Trinity Christian tonight in their District 4-5A opener. This is the first meeting between Bolles and Trinity Christian since 2000.

University Christian (Jacksonville) is the first team to 4-0 after rolling past Crescent City, 55-28. Despite that, the Christians drop two spots to No. 9.

Rounding out the top 10 is Madison County (3-0). The Cowboys rolled over Florida High (Tallahassee) 49-6 and dropped one position this week but remain in the top 10.

New to the poll this week is #18 Bishop Kenny (Jacksonville), #19 Flagler Palm Coast, and No. 20 Dixie County (Cross City).

Dropping out from last week is Buchholz (Gainesville), Clay (Green Cove Springs), and Baker County (Glen St. Mary).

The Prep Zone Power Poll ranks the top 20 high school football, basketball, baseball & softball teams (regardless of FHSAA classification) across 26 counties in North Central Florida (Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Citrus, Clay, Columbia, Dixie, Duval, Flagler, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Hernando, Jefferson, Lafayette, Lake, Levy, Madison, Marion, Nassau, Putnam, Sumter, St. Johns, Suwannee, Taylor, Union & Volusia counties). It is voted on weekly by sportswriters and sportscasters. It is fueled by Divine Power Wear.

ThePrepZone.com Sports Report Presented by SunState Federal Credit Union

Mike RidaughtIn case you missed it on Wednesday afternoon, Mike Ridaught joined Jeff Cardozo & Zach Alboverdi on “The Tailgate” on WRUF-98.1 FM & 850 AM in Gainesville. Here are the things they discussed on ThePrepZone.com Sports Report Presented by SunState Federal Credit Union.

Well, first and foremost, the safety of the student-athletes, parents, coaches and school administrators impacted by Hurricane Irma remains their top concern. The FHSAA has chosen “not to uniformly cancel, postpone and/or prohibit play. The decision to practice and/or play remains up to each individual school and/or school district.” In fact, provided facilities, roadways and conditions permit, each school is encouraged to resume play as soon as possible. Now you’re still seeing games getting canceled or postponed but the FHSAA is not making those decisions. One additional thing that the FHSAA is doing, in an effort to get teams conditioned and back on track with regularly scheduled games, practice will be permitted this Sunday only, but that again is with the school’s and/or school districts approval. There is no school in Alachua County or Marion County for the rest of the week and none of those counties will have games this week – except St. Francis Catholic Academy, which is playing over in the Panhandle at Rocky Bayou Christian in Niceville. Last I heard, that game is still on.

  • Last week, games were moved up to Thursday but there was still football for most teams. What were some of the highlights?

Unfortunately, Central (Brooksville) at Eastside (Gainesville) was canceled last week. So was Aucilla Christian (Monticello) at Saint Francis Catholic Academy (Gainesville). Gainesville was off last week, and their game for this week has been rescheduled so they’ll have two weeks off in between games.

But last Thursday, Williston defeated Lecanto Seven Rivers Christian (Lecanto), 28-14, thanks to a school-record 307 yards rushing by Gerard Williams III. He had 27 carries, with three touchdowns, but the senior really got stronger as the game went on. During Williston’s first five possessions, Williams had 13 carries for 115 yards. However, on Williston’s final three drives, he had 192 yards on 14 carries, with 2 TDs. One interesting note – Williston, Dixie County (Cross City), and Bell are a combined 8-0, so the teams in the Tri-County area off to a good start.

Oak Hall (Gainesville) moved to 2-0 with a win against Bronson. Quarterback Matt Armstrong had all six touchdowns in the game (four through the air and two on the ground); Columbia (Lake City) dominated Buchholz, 42-7, solidifying Columbia as the best team in this area; Hawthorne beat P.K. Yonge (Gainesville) to keep the Hornets (2-0) undefeated and the Blue Wave (0-3) winless; Trenton (2-1) beat South Sumter (Bushnell), a team that was in the 4A state semifinals last year; Fort White rolled against Santa Fe (Alachua), keeping Fort White (3-0) undefeated and Santa Fe (0-3) winless.

  • What games have been canceled or rescheduled so far this week and how does that affect things moving forward?

It’s been a roller coaster the past 24 hours. GHS was supposed to host Lake Weir (Ocala) on Friday night at Citizen’s Field but Marion County canceled school and all activities for the rest of the week. Gainesville misses two weeks of game play because they were off last week and now won’t play this week. Their next game now is next Friday night at North Marion (Citra). The Lake Weir at Gainesville football game has been moved to Monday, October 30th.  This morning, Eastside got approval to move their Thursday night game against Newberry to Friday night, but two hours later Alachua County shut them down.Sunstate Logo

The Buchholz (Gainesville) game scheduled for Friday at Fleming Island (Orange Park) has been moved to Monday night at 7 p.m. Belleview’s home game against Dunnellon has also been pushed back to Monday (7:30 p.m.). Buchholz was scheduled to host Belleview next Friday night, Sept. 22, at Citizen’s Field. However, with both teams playing on Monday night, and both teams having an open date the following week (Sept. 29), the two will now play a Thursday night game (Sept. 28) at Citizen’s Field.

Bell, which is in Gilchrist County, has moved its game against Hawthorne to Monday night at 6:30 p.m. Big game between undefeated teams in 1A. Another school in that county, Williston High School, has moved its home game against Madison County to Saturday night at 6. That’s another match-up of unbeaten teams. Trenton was trying to move their game to Saturday night but practices and the game against Branford have now been canceled for this week.

Plus, Oak Hall’s home against St. Augustine St. Joseph, Bradford at Santa Fe, P.K. Yonge at Bronson, Hawthorne at Bell, Keystone Heights at Umatilla, Chiefland at Hamilton County – all those games have been canceled for this week. In fact, after being contacted by the Sheriff’s department about the detouring of I-75 onto US 19, Chiefland coach Adam Gore has decided to cancel all football practices until school resumes.

We’ll see when or if certain games will be rescheduled, but teams are going to do everything they can to play. The FHSAA wants them to play, as I mentioned earlier, if they are able to play. In fact, in Mayo on Saturday, Lafayette is going to host Jefferson County (Monticello) at 7 p.m. However, if there is no power, the teams will still play but they’ll move the game up to 4 p.m. Further south is a totally different story. I saw where Clewiston High School’s press box was completely destroyed. Homes were under water in Naples. There are Floridians who will be dealing with Irma for a long time.

But locally, we are gradually piecing things together, and I do believe playing sports will be a good outlet for these kids. We may have Monday night football or even Tuesday night in the near future in an effort to play games. The good news for two schools just outside of Gainesville, in what will be the only (Gainesville) area game on Friday night, Union County (Lake Butler) hosts Dixie County in what will be a match-up of unbeaten teams. Dixie County has won four in a row, but this game will be in Lake Butler. It should be a good measuring stick for both teams.

FHSAA Football Update on Hurricane Irma

1

fhsaa shieldSeptember 12: Hurricane Irma (Football) Bulletin
Posted September 12th, 2017, on FHSAA.org
Member Schools & Administration:

The FHSAA Staff is sending positive thoughts your way as you all begin to pick up the pieces and rebuild your schools and your communities following Hurricane Irma. Please be advised that our staff is here to assist, should there be anything we can do to provide you help and/or support in this time of need.

Although the FHSAA understands that in most areas of our state, high school athletics is certainly not a priority at this time, we have been inundated with questions and concerns regarding FHSAA Football specifically. Therefore, we’ve put together the following bulletin and FAQ’s to address all your questions and concerns.

September 12: Hurricane Irma (Football) Bulletin

The safety of the student-athletes, parents, coaches and school administrators impacted by Hurricane Irma remains our top concern. Due to the widespread and varying levels of impact from Hurricane Irma, the FHSAA has chosen not to uniformly cancel, postpone and/or prohibit play. The FHSAA plans to maintain the originally scheduled season dates in an effort to cause the least amount of impact on all other non-athletic activities. The decision to practice and/or play remains up to each individual school and/or school district. Provided facilities, roadways and conditions permit, each school is encouraged to resume play as soon as possible. In an effort to get teams conditioned appropriately and back on track with regularly scheduled games, practice will be permitted this Sunday (September 17th) only, with your school and/or school districts approval.

In the event games need to be rescheduled or postponed, schools are encouraged to work together to come up with a date that best suits all parties involved. If a game is rescheduled, please email all specific details to football@fhsaa.org as soon as a decision has been made.

With regard to the FHSAA’s points system for Football, as originally planned, total points will be determined by dividing points earned by games played. If a school falls below the eight (8) game (minimum) requirement, the Executive Director may waive the minimum game requirement on a case-by-case basis.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Can we practice?

a. Practice is a school and/or school district based decision. Provided your school and/or school district permits you to do so, practices are permitted.

2. Can we play this week?

a. This is a school and/or school district based decision. Provided your school and/or school district permits you to do so, and conditions are appropriate, returning to your regular schedule of games is permitted and encouraged.

3. Can we play this week’s game on Monday of next week?

a. This is a school and/or school district based decision. Provided your school and/or school district permits you to do so, and conditions are appropriate, you may play your game any day (except Sunday), that is suitable for all parties involved. However, you are encouraged to play as soon as possible, provided facilities, roadways and conditions are appropriate.

4. Can we practice on Sunday?

a. Yes, provided your school and/or school district permits, practice will be permitted this Sunday (Sunday, September 17th) only.

5. What happens if I don’t play a minimum eight (8) games?

a. The Executive Director may waive the minimum game requirement on a case-by-case basis. This was part of the original policy for these specific types of situations.

6. Will playing fewer games than regularly scheduled hurt our playoff chances?

a. No. This is why there is a divisor. Total points will be determined by dividing points earned by games played. This was part of the original policy for these specific types of situations.

7. We have a district game this week, when should we make it up?

a. Games are encouraged to be made up as quickly as possible, provided facilities, roadways and conditions are appropriate. Below are a few options on when you could possibly make these games up:

1. Play Monday (9/18) or Tuesday (9/19) of Week 5;

2. Make the game up in the coming weeks, preferably on a Monday;

3. If options 1 and 2 are not feasible, please contact the FHSAA office for further assistance.

8. If we are playing a non-district game and the other team doesn’t agree to play or make it up, is it counted as a forfeit?

a. No. If a makeup date was agreed to in your game contract, both schools will be required to uphold the contract. However, if there is no contracted makeup date and no agreement on a necessary makeup date, the game will be stricken from the schedule and neither school will be awarded a win or a loss.

9. Can we add a game now and will it count for playoff points?

a. You may add a game, but it will not count towards playoff points. Only games on your original schedule will be used for playoff qualification purposes.

Quotes of the Game – 2017 Week #3

Knocked-down-Football-quotePeriodically throughout the season we’ll go around the coverage area and give you a football player and/or coach quotes following the games. Here are area newspaper football players and/or coaches quotes from Week #3:

Seven Rivers Christian (Lecanto) coach Rayburn Greene following Williston’s 28-14 win thanks to a school-record 307 yards rushing by Gerard Williams III

“Williston is a good football team. “That kid’s certainly a very talented running back. But it’s Florida, you’re going to see that. Talent’s everywhere. We did the best we could. We knew he was going to take off for some big plays. We told our kids, ‘It’s always next play.’ … I thought we did enough to win the game, with him. But we didn’t. I think our kids are tough. We’re outmatched and out-manned, and that was a football game. It was anybody’s game. They scored one late, but they didn’t come in here and dominate us, by no stretch of the imagination. It shows our kids we can play and hopefully we can come back Tuesday and look forward, not behind.” – Citrus County Chronicle

Vanguard (Ocala) middle linebacker Gavin Pate after the Knights (3-0) defeated county rival North Marion (Citra), 45-0, on Thursday night at Booster Stadium

“It’s pretty fun watching them score points. It’s like a video game. “If (Madden) had a high school version, I would be playing with my team. In my opinion, (our defense) is the best in (the offense’s) eyes, and they are the best in our eyes. We raise each other up to another level.” – Ocala Star-Banner

North Marion coach Willie Offord after his Colts fell to 0-3 after the loss to the state-ranked Knights

“We were definitely not the better football team out here. They’ve got a really good team, and this was a good test for us. Our kids played hard throughout, and they didn’t quit, even when there was a running clock (which began with 9:06 remaining in the third quarter). We tried our best and basically have a JV team playing now. We faced the giant, and we’re still babies. But the kids showed a lot of heart and will continue to get better.”– Ocala Star-Banner

Columbia (Lake City) coach Brian Allen on QB Dylan Blair, who threw three first-half TD passes in the Tigers’ 42-7 win against Buchholz (Gainesville)

“We’re really excited with what Dylan has been doing since week one. He was down on himself after the Gainesville game because he knows the capabilities that he has. There’s a reason that kid is the starter. He’s spent two years learning this offense. Now it’s his turn. For him, it was a huge game tonight.” – The Gainesville Sun

Buchholz (Gainesville) coach Mark Whittemore on the Columbia Tigers

“They’re a very good football team. They’re very good up front. I think that leads them to creating some big plays. Obviously, we didn’t play very well, but a lot of times you don’t play very well against good teams. Brian’s got this thing clicking.”– The Gainesville Sun

Hawthorne coach Cornelius Ingram after his Hornets (2-0) rushed for 245 yards and threw for 167 in a 46-20 win against P.K. Yonge (Gainesville)

“We finally put it together. We’ve had some games where we’ve been close, where we’ve had the right call and we’ve had some drops or missed passes. We still put the ball on the ground too much and have things we need to work on.” – The Gainesville Sun

Ridgeview (Orange Park) second-year coach Cameron Porch on turning the program around to a 3-0 start after beginning the season with an 18-game losing streak. The Panthers defeated Westside (Jacksonville), 51-36, to stay unbeaten

“Our main word, one we use over and over, is complacency. We want the guys to have confidence and expect to win, but don’t prepare thinking, well, it’s just going to happen. That’s the main thing we’re trying to guard against. But we’re proud of them. The main positive talk that we’ve been hearing, and the only one that really matters, is our own student body’s and faculty’s. They’ve really become attached to the team. We’ve had good turnout at games, the student support has been great.”– The Florida Times-Union

West Port (Ocala) coach Matt Franklin following the Wolf Pack’s 41-7 win against Citrus (Inverness)

“All three phases of our team were clicking tonight. I’m happy with the intensity our guys played, and their focus. We knew we were capable of something like this. It’s just about getting a team down and eliminating any hope. We’ve had a couple instances already this season where we get up on an opponent and then just let off. Tonight though, we stayed on them, got to the running clock. It was a total team effort.” – Ocala Star-Banner
