Prep Zone Power Poll – 2012 Football #10

GAINESVILLE- For now, there’s no uncertainty surrounding the top team in the Prep Zone Power Poll.

Top-ranked Gainesville (9-0) went to Boot Hill and handed previous #2 Madison County its first home regular season loss in six years, 14-9, to remain on top of this week’s poll. The ‘Canes are now one win away from their first unbeaten regular season in school history.

GHS received all seven first-place votes, while the Cowboys (8-1) slipped five spots to No. 7.

First Coast (Jacksonville) remained unbeaten following a 27-7 win over previous #14 Raines (6-2), which dropped six spots to 20th. The Bucs (8-0) moved up one spot to second in this week’s poll.

South Sumter (Bushnell) routed Keystone Heights, 42-0, and moved up one spot to third. The Raiders (9-0) have outscored their last five opponents, 241-14.

Columbia (Lake City) (7-1) moved up one spot to fourth following a 21-0 win over Orange Park. The Tigers’ lone defeat came against the top-ranked ‘Canes in week #2 and they could see each other again in the Class 6A playoffs.

St. Augustine (8-0) rounds out the top five. The Yellow Jackets defeated Lee (Jacksonville), 42-0, for their third shutout of the season.

For the second consecutive week, no ranked teams fell out of the poll. The only losses (Madison County & Raines) were to teams that were ranked in the top 20.

The Prep Zone Power Poll ranks the top 20 high school football, basketball and baseball teams (regardless of classification) across 26 counties in north Florida (Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Citrus, Clay, Columbia, Dixie, Duval, Flagler, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Hernando, Jefferson, Lafayette, Lake, Levy, Marion, Nassau, Putnam, Sumter, St. Johns, Suwannee, Taylor, Union & Volusia counties). It is voted on weekly by sportswriters and sportscasters.

Sonic Player-of-the-Game

  • Thursday, October 25, was Ahmad Ivey of the Gainesville football team. Ivey hauled in two touchdowns as Buchholz kept its postseason hopes alive with a 31-10 win over Forest (Ocala) in a Class 7A-District 1 game.  The sophomore caught a 29-yard TD pass from quarterback Bryce Goston in the third quarter, followed by a 49-yard reception for a score in the 4th quarter.  He also had five carries for 16 yards, added a 23-yard punt return and recorded a sack on defense.
  • Friday, October 26, was Alex Gonzales of the Gainesville football team. Gonzales had 11 tackles (2 solo, 9 assists) as GHS (9-0) defeated previously unbeaten Madison County, 14-9, to hand the Cowboys (8-1) their first regular-season home loss in six years.  The senior added two sacks for a GHS defense that allowed only 222 yards and forced six three-and-out possessions.

Trophy Shop Athlete-of-the-Week Presented by Mark McGriff’s State Farm Insurance of Gainesville for the week of October 22

  • Sir Jackson of the Eastside (Gainesville) football team. Jackson was 16-of-24 passing for 206 yards and four touchdowns as Eastside defeated North Marion (Citra), 42-41 in overtime, to win its first district title in four years.  He also ran 14 times for 124 yards.  The senior, who completed a five-yard TD pass to tie the game in OT and a two-point conversion to win it, sent the game into overtime when he blocked a 23-yard field goal attempt for North Marion that would have given the Colts their 10th consecutive district title.

October 25th, 7:00pm – Forest is at Citizens Field in Gainesville for a District 1-7A battle with Buchholz. The Bobcats are coming of a big win at Chiles and the Wildcats need to right the ship after three consecutive losses.

Final: Buchholz 31, Forest 10

October 25, 7:00 – Raines Vikings at First Coast Buccaneers.

via: iBN Sports

RAINES (6-1) AT FIRST COAST (7-0), Thursday, 7 p.m.:  A big test coming off of the bye week for the Buccaneers, who boast the area’s most opportunistic defense (4.1 turnovers forced per game), a rapidly improving offense and the growing confidence of quarterback DeAndre Johnson. The Vikings have a good quarterback-tailback combo (Marvin Zanders and Alex Gardner), and an embarrassment of riches at the wideout position, who will be sure to test a secondary led by corner Kamren Lott. This is for Gateway Conference bragging rights. – via: Jacksonville.com
