Sonic Player-of-the-Game

  • Thursday, October 25, was Ahmad Ivey of the Gainesville football team. Ivey hauled in two touchdowns as Buchholz kept its postseason hopes alive with a 31-10 win over Forest (Ocala) in a Class 7A-District 1 game.  The sophomore caught a 29-yard TD pass from quarterback Bryce Goston in the third quarter, followed by a 49-yard reception for a score in the 4th quarter.  He also had five carries for 16 yards, added a 23-yard punt return and recorded a sack on defense.
  • Friday, October 26, was Alex Gonzales of the Gainesville football team. Gonzales had 11 tackles (2 solo, 9 assists) as GHS (9-0) defeated previously unbeaten Madison County, 14-9, to hand the Cowboys (8-1) their first regular-season home loss in six years.  The senior added two sacks for a GHS defense that allowed only 222 yards and forced six three-and-out possessions.

  • Sir Jackson of the Eastside (Gainesville) football team. Jackson was 16-of-24 passing for 206 yards and four touchdowns as Eastside defeated North Marion (Citra), 42-41 in overtime, to win its first district title in four years.  He also ran 14 times for 124 yards.  The senior, who completed a five-yard TD pass to tie the game in OT and a two-point conversion to win it, sent the game into overtime when he blocked a 23-yard field goal attempt for North Marion that would have given the Colts their 10th consecutive district title.
