Sonic Player-of-the-Game (Oct. 20) – Jaleeco Gaskins (North Marion)

Sonic-logoOur Sonic Player-of-the-game for Friday, Oct. 20, is Jaleeco Gaskins of the North Marion (Citra) football team.

Gaskins helped lead the Colts to a 26-7 win at Belleview, denying the Rattlers of the outright Class 5A-District 6 championship. The defense set the tone, but he was a workhorse and helped keep the North Marion defense on the sidelines.

The junior carried the ball 27 times and rushed for 172 yards and a touchdown.  He also had a 40-yard TD run called back because of penalty.Jaleeco Gaskins_North Marion

With the defense allowing less than 80 yards of total offense and Gaskins keeping the defense fresh, the Colts were able to dominate in both phases in winning their 12th straight against the Rattlers.

The win helped North Marion (2-6, 1-1) keep its slim playoff hopes alive. Belleview (5-3, 1-1) and Eastside (4-4, 1-1), which beat North Marion 14-12 on Sept. 29 to deny the Colts an outright title, hold the edge in points for the playoff spot.

Belleview will look to bounce back at Tampa Catholic next Friday, while North Marion returns home to face Trinity Catholic (Ocala).  The Colts close out the regular season against winless Class 8A Winter Springs on Friday, Nov. 3.

Every game The Prep Zone will recognize a Sonic Player-of-the-Game. The recipient receives a $10 gift card & certificate courtesy of Sonic Drive-In of Gainesville & Ocala.

Rocky Bayou Christian at Oak Hall School – Football 2017

Friday, 6:45 p.m. – High School Football
Rocky Bayou Christian (Niceville) at Oak Hall School (Gainesville)

Join Skyler Lebron (Play-by-play) and Sarah Morton (Color), with Joseph Hastings on camera, for this North Florida Football Conference game. The Eagles are looking to keep their FHSAA playoff hopes alive in Class 2A-Region 2. It’s also Homecoming and Senior Night for the Eagles.

ThePrepZone.com Sports Report Presented by SunState Federal Credit Union (Oct. 18)

Mike RidaughtIn case you missed it on Wednesday, Oct. 18, Mike Ridaught joined Jeff Cardozo on “The Tailgate” on WRUF-98.1 FM & 850 AM at 4 p.m to talk high school sports. Here are the things they discussed on ThePrepZone.com Sports Report Presented by SunState Federal Credit Union:

The postseason begins this week for volleyball, golf & swimming. Who are some of the area teams that will either play for a district title this week or won a district title?

We’ll start with golf. In girls golf, Gainesville won the 7-team Class 2A-District 3 title by 27 strokes. Ally Cerlanek shot an 84 to win the individual title for GHS. The Lady Hurricanes will advance to the Region 1 tournament in Gulf Breeze next Tuesday. Buchholz won the Class 3A-District 2 title at Haile Plantation. Sophomore Amelia Williams improved her record at Buchholz this year to 15-4 with a score of 76.

In boys golf, Buchholz finished third in the 3A-District 2 tournament but they still advance to next week’s Region 1 tournament in Ocala. The P.K. Yonge girls and boys won the district championship with 17 individual wins, and the Oak Hall girls & boys golf teams also won district titles.

In swimming, P.K. Yonge swept the girls & boys 1A-District 3 meet. The girls actually won every event except for the 1-meter diving. The Oak Hall girls finished second while the boys finished third.

And in volleyball last night, Buchholz defeated Oakleaf (Orange Park) in four in 8A-District 4. They will play No. 2 seed Bartram Trail on Thursday for the title in a match-up of the top two seeds. In 5A-District 4, Newberry advanced to the championship with a sweep of Bradford (Starke). Gainesville lost in four sets at Vanguard (Ocala) in the Class 7A-District 4 semifinals; Belleview swept Eastside to advance to Thursday’s 6A-District 6 final against Santa Fe. The Raiders swept North Marion; St. Francis Catholic advanced to the district championship in 3A-District 2; Oak Hall and P.K. Yonge went five sets, but the Eagles advanced to the 4A-District 1 championship, and Hawthorne lost to Union County in Class 1A-District 6, so the Lady Tigers will face Crescent City for the title on Thursday night.Sunstate Logo

The high school football season is winding down. I wanted to ask you about two games in particular and what chance do Buchholz and Gainesville have of making the playoffs.

Buchholz at Oakleaf – The Bobcats are coming off their first district win of the season last Thursday night against Creekside (St. Johns) to put them at 1-1 in the district and they face a must-win situation as far as the state playoffs go. If they can beat Oakleaf on the road this Friday, and they are a slight favorite to do so, then they host state-ranked Bartram Trail next week, and then they close against Santa Fe, which they should win.

They’ve got two state-ranked teams in their district. Fleming Island (Orange Park) is the other and they lost to Bartram Trail for their only district loss. Bartram Trail is undefeated in the district, so the district championship is a long shot, plus they couldn’t get in as district runners-up because those have been done away with. However, they could benefit from the new FHSAA playoff format as far as points.

Right now, Buchholz is 7th in Class 7A-Region 1. East Ridge (Clermont) was upset by West Port (Ocala), so that has at least helped open the door. But that wouldn’t have been possible had Buchholz not taken care of business. Going back to last week, I thought Trent Whittemore did a great job filling in as quarterback. Whittemore threw three TD’s and the Bobcats also had two kick returns for scores and scored 54 points, which is the most ever under coach Mark Whittemore. I think Friday is a winnable game. However, the Bobcats will have to win out to have any chance of making the playoffs. But I’m saying there’s a chance.

Gainesville at Leesburg – GHS is still alive for a postseason spot despite the loss to Vanguard last week. For those who don’t know, Vanguard entered that game at Citizen’s Field last Friday night undefeated and unscored on in four of their five games. They were loaded with guys who will be playing Division-I football, and they blew out Gainesville last year by almost 50 points. Yet, it was tie game with less than five minutes to play. Vanguard’s Marquez Glover had a 2-yard QB draw with 63 seconds to play to give the Knights a 31-24 win.

Glover took over for N’Kosi Perry, who is now at the University of Miami, and this team hasn’t missed a beat. Glover had four TDs and now has 19 TDs in six games. He out-dueled Luke Matthews of Gainesville, who had two passing scores. But for Gainesville to go toe-to-toe with what is now the No. 4 team in the state in Class 6A, it definitely proved GHS might be playoff worthy. That game snapped a 4-game winning streak, and if the season ended today, the Hurricanes would receive a bid based on points.

But they have to go to Leesburg this week, which could be tough. Any time you go into a hostile territory like that you could lose. Leesburg beat Ocala Forest at home earlier this year. Gainesville held on for a win earlier this season at Forest and won on a missed field goal with 30 seconds to play. After Leesburg, the Hurricanes host South Lake next Thursday, and then four days later they have a Hurricane Irma make-good on a Monday night at home against Ocala Lake Weir. They likely have to win out too to make the playoffs, but I’m saying there’s a chance.

The Trophy Shop Athlete of the Week – Amelia Williams (Buchholz)

The Trophy ShopThe Trophy Shop Athlete of the Week for the week of October 9 is AMELIA WILLIAMS* of the Buchholz (Gainesville) girls’ golf team.

Bobcats_Buchholz

*Williams helped the Lady Bobcats capture their fifth straight Jill Darr Invitational title. The sophomore was the low medalist with a 3-under 69. She had a bogey-free round. The Jill Darr Invitational, named after the late Jill Darr Rowell, represents the Alachua County championship.

Previous 2017-18 winners:

Oct. 2 – Charles Strong (Union County football)
The FSU commit rushed for 262 yards and scored three touchdowns as Union County (6-1) defeated previously unbeaten Hawthorne, 31-25, in overtime. Strong, who has 1,139 yards and 13 TDs on the season, scored the game-winner from 10 yards out in OT. He also had a 23-yard scoring run and a 12-yard TD run.

Sept. 25 – Demari Turner (St. Francis Catholic football)
Turner came up with the big plays, catching four passes for 168 yards and two touchdowns, to help lead the Wolves to a 36-0 win against rival Oak Hall and snap the Eagles’ two-game win streak in the series. The senior wide receiver had scoring catches of 63 and 89 yards as St. Francis Catholic knocked off the previously-unbeaten Eagles and snapped their overall winning streak at 13 games. He also had a 2-point conversion and helped the defense pitch its first shutout of the season.

Sept. 18 – Anthony Richardson (Eastside football)
The sophomore quarterback led the Rams to a 2-0 week, which is twice as many wins as Eastside had (1) all season in 2016. Richardson had 646 yards and 10 touchdowns rushing and passing. In the Rams’ 33-28 home win over Newberry on Monday, he accounted for all five of their touchdowns, finishing with 348 yards and two scores through the air and 65 yards and three scores on the ground. On Friday, at Lake Weir (Ocala), Richardson ran for 102 yards on 11 carries with two TDs, and 131 yards passing with three scores.

Sept. 11 – No award due to Hurricane Irma

Sept. 4 – Gerard Williams III (Williston football)
Williams set a school record with 307 yards on 27 carries, with three touchdowns, in the Red Devils’ 28-14 win at Seven Rivers Christian (Lecanto). During Williston’s first five possessions, the senior had 13 carries for 115 yards. However, on Williston’s final three drives, he had 192 yards on 14 carries, with 2 TDs.

Moving back in the poll for the first time since the opening week of the season is Baker County (Glen St. Mary), which is 18th. The Wildcats (6-1) won their sixth straight game, 35-0, at Orange Park and haven’t lost since week 1 at #2 St. Augustine.

Clay (Green Cove Springs) also moves back in the poll at #20 after a 49-3 win at then-#19 Ridgeview (Orange Park).

Ridgeview drops out this week along with East Ridge (Clermont), which was 20th last week but lost 21-14 at West Port (Ocala).

Union County still controls its football destiny

Union_County_TigersDespite a 40-0 loss at Class 3A Fort White last Friday night, the Union County (Lake Butler) football team is still a No. 4 seed in the latest Class 1A-Region 3 projections.  At the end of the season, the top four teams in the region will make the state playoffs.

The Tigers (6-2) had several players out due to injury against the Indians, including star running back Charles Strong, an FSU commit.  Strong, who was recognized as our Trophy Shop Athlete of the Week following an overtime win against Hawthorne, is already over 1,000 yards for the season (134 carries for 1,059 yards).

Currently, Union County is fourth in the region behind state-ranked Madison County (8-0) and No. 4 Dixie County (Cross City) (8-0), who are first and fourth respectively in Class 1A, and unbeaten Lafayette (Mayo) (7-0).  Chiefland (4-4) flip-flopped with Bell and is now fifth in the standings, followed by the Bulldogs (3-4) at No. 6, and Branford (3-4), Hilliard (2-3) and Hamilton County (Jasper) (0-7).

Regardless of the margin of victory in the Tigers’ last game, the score of a game does not affect the number of points a team receives.  In other words, a score of 7-6 will result in the same number of points as a score of 40-0.

This week the Tigers will host Williston, which is currently sixth in Class 1A-Region 4.

1. Madison County (44.71)

5. Chiefland (34.14)
6. Bell (32.29)
