The same nine teams occupy the top nine spots in the latest FlaVarsity.com Top 25 – an all-classification football poll voted on by sportswriters and sportscasters around the state.

Manatee continues to be the unanimous number 1 team, followed by Palm Beach Gardens Dwyer and Tallahassee Lincoln (all 7A schools). Miami Booker T. Washington (4A) remains in fourth and American Heritage-Delray (3A) is fifth.

Jacksonville First Coast (7A), Gainesville (6A), Davie University School (3A), Seffner Armwood (6A) are in spots 6-9 while Orlando Dr. Phillips (8A) is the highest ranked 8A school and comes in at No. 10.

The biggest mover this week was Dade City Pasco – jumping three spots to No. 19. The Pirates have a stellar defense and have yet to be challenged in a game. Entering the poll for the first time was 5A power Tallahassee Godby (6-0 tied for 24th) and rejoining the rankings after a big win was No. 23 Miami Northwestern.

Weston Cypress Bay and Miami Christopher Columbus fell from the rankings after losses.

‘Canes Win City Championship

0

By Max Mattern

Buchholz’s coach Mark Whittemore knew the team had to have a flawless game to even compete with GHS Friday night at Citizen’s Field.

On the first play of the game, Buchholz High School’s quarterback, Jordan Nichols, pitched the ball right to running back, Logan Weekes where he got pummeled by the Gainesville High School’s talented line backing corps for a two-yard loss.

The very next play Nichols lined up in a shotgun formation, looking like he was going to throw it against GHS’s defense—he never even got the chance.

When the ball left the center’s hands, it soared over Nichols’ head. He was in a dead sprint with nearly half of GHS’s defense to pick up the ball, but Nichols’ had no luck. Linebacker Keon Jenkins recovered the fumble in the end zone for a touchdown, and GHS never looked back.

Buchholz had more than a few flaws in the game.

Undefeated GHS (6-0, 2-0) put on a clinic against city rival Buchholz by a score of 44-7. This is the fourth consecutive year GHS has won the City Championship.

The flaws for Buchholz piled up in the game: four fumbles, five delay of game penalties, and three unsportsmanlike conduct penalties to name a few. This was not the type of day the team needed to have.

Nichols left the game with a shoulder injury after going 1-for-8 with 3 yards passing during the first half. Whittemore put in sophomore playmaker Ahmad Ivey.

Ivey has played running back, receiver, corner back, and return man, but did not throw the ball coming into the game. It showed since he went 1-for-7 with negative 3 yards. Buchholz left him in though because of his explosive running.

Ivey ran the ball 13 times for 77 yards, including a 40-yard dash for the lone score for the Bobcats. Buchholz has a talented playmaker in Ivey but need to find pieces to put around him.

On the other side of the field, GHS’s offense was on point all game long.

GHS senior quarterback Mark Cato lit up Buchholz’s defense, throwing 12-for-22 with 223 yards and four touchdowns. His accuracy could not be ignored in the game.

He went into halftime throwing 9-for-10. In the second half, Cato tossed a few jump balls in the air to avoid getting sacked, but other than that, he definitely impressed. Division I scouts could be looking at him soon.

All the talk about GHS’s receivers seem to be focused on University of Florida commit Chris Thompson, but that was not the case for this game. Case Harrison and Kenric Young caught all the passes from Cato.

Young finished the day with five catches for 93 yards and two touchdowns as Harrison ended up with five catches, 123 yards and two scores for himself. He also rushed once for a 1-yard touchdown.

Considering Thompson has been out for the past few games, he was getting integrated into the speed of real-time football. He finally got playing time, but clearly the coaching staff limited his touches. He played four snaps with one rush for seven yards and one catch for six yards.

GHS’s defense impacted the flow of Buchholz’s offense by forcing six sacks on the day.

Running back Rapheal Webb ran the ball 14 times for 91 yards. It was not his most impressive day, but coach James Thomson had a mindset of passing the ball.

The other key running back, Tony James, was out for the game. GHS are saving star players like James and Thompson for next week against Vanguard.

October 12, 2012 – Buchholz Bobcats and Gainesville Hurricanes LIVE from Citizens Field. The last of the Gainesville rivalry games for the football season. This broadcast will also be on ESPN Radio in Gainesville & Ocala.

Read the recap of the game here

A week after losing to one of the top Class 7A teams in the state in Tallahassee Lincoln, Buchholz faces perhaps an even tougher foe, which also happens to be its biggest city rival — 6A No. 1 Gainesville.

The annual showdown takes place tonight at 7:30 at Citizens Field, where the Hurricanes (6-0) look to take home their fourth straight city title with their fourth consecutive win over the Bobcats (2-4).

“Anytime you are ranked No. 1, you are going to be a tough team to beat,” said Buchholz first-year coach Mark Whittemore. “We have to click on all cylinders and the ball definitely needs to bounce our way a few times.” — visit Gainesville Preps for the rest of the story.

Cypress Bay at Manatee

October 12, 7:30pm

“Cypress Bay (4-1), MaxPreps #28 team in the state of Florida and the #4 team in Class 8A, suffered their only loss this season to perennial power St. Thomas Aquinas. The Lightning will look to avenge last years 21-0 loss to Manatee. The #2 team in the Rivals High 100, Manatee (5-0), likes their chances behind reigning Florida Player of the Year Cord Sandberg. The senior Mississippi State commit is approaching the 1,000 yard mark passing on the season. With big wins against Miramar and Miami Central, along with boasting a handful of D-1 recruits, Manatee is making a strong case as to why they are a contender to repeat as 7A champions.”

Prep Zone Power Poll – 2012 Football #7

GAINESVILLE – Gainesville High has ascended to the spot it has held in the Class 6A rankings the past few weeks – No. 1.

GHS (6-0) routed Citrus (Inverness), 56-7, but got some help as top-ranked Fletcher (Neptune Beach) turned the ball over five times and was upset at home by district foe DeLand, 30-28. That vaulted the 2nd-ranked ‘Canes to the top spot of this week’s Prep Zone Power Poll where it received all seven first-place votes.

Meanwhile, the Class 8A Senators (5-1) tumbled six spots to seventh. They travel to Flagler Palm Coast in two weeks in what could be a must-win game.

Class 3A Madison County (6-0) rolled to a 51-7 win over 7A West Port (Ocala) and moved up one spot to third.

First Coast (Jacksonville) rallied from a 13-0 deficit to defeat previous #7 Fleming Island (Orange Park), 19-16, in a key Class 7A-District 2 game, which moved the Bucs (6-0) up one spot to fourth. The Golden Eagles (5-1) dropped only two spots to ninth.

South Sumter (Bushnell), which is averaging 46.6 points per game, posted its first shutout of the season in a 41-0 win at Bradford (Starke) in a Class 4A-District 4 contest. The Raiders (6-0) moved up one spot to fourth, while St. Augustine (5-0), which was idle, also moved up one spot to round out the top five.

Springstead (Spring Hill) (6-0) and Keystone Heights (5-1) move into the top 20 for the first time this season at Nos. 18 and 19 respectively. Chiefland, which lost to Newberry, and Crystal River, which lost at North Marion, fell out of this week’s poll.

The Prep Zone Power Poll ranks the top 20 high school football, basketball and baseball teams (regardless of classification) across 26 counties in north Florida (Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Citrus, Clay, Columbia, Dixie, Duval, Flagler, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Hernando, Jefferson, Lafayette, Lake, Levy, Marion, Nassau, Putnam, Sumter, St. Johns, Suwannee, Taylor, Union & Volusia counties).
