Derrick Henry Sets National Rushing Record

0

Congratulations to Yulee’s Derrick Henry who set the national rushing record this past Friday night in a 41-26 win against Taylor County (Perry) in the first round of the Class 4A state playoffs.  He passes Ken Hall of Sugar Land (TX), who rushed for 11,232 yards in the early 1950s (’50-’53).

FHSAA Football Playoffs (11/30)

November 23rd, 2012

FHSAA Football Playoffs (11/23)

Happy Thanksgiving! Among the many things that I am thankful for is the high school football playoffs. We’ve completed round #1 and possibly separated the ‘pretenders’ from the ‘contenders.’ After tonight, we’ll be down to our final four teams in Classes 1A-4A and down to the top eight (5A-8A). Last week, Buchholz (Gainesville) shocked the state with a win at First Coast (Jacksonville), 10-7 (OT), keeping the 2nd-ranked Class 7A Bucs from reaching the title game in consecutive seasons. Which team will pull the next upset? Will it be Vanguard (Ocala)? The Knights travel to top-ranked Gainesville tonight in the 6A playoffs. Will it be Eastside (Gainesville), which travels to Pasco (Dade City), currently ranked second in the AP Class 5A rankings. Or, will Buchholz do the unthinkable and defeat their second consecutive top 10 team on the road in the playoffs?

  • Vanguard (Ocala) at Gainesville – Another district championship rematch as Gainesville defeated Vanguard, 34-19, for the 5-6A title.  GHS (11-0) is ranked #1 in the state.  They rolled over Hernando (Brooksville), 60-3, in week #1.  The ‘Canes have been suffocating on defense, holding their last three opponents to a combine 12 points.  But the Knights (6-5), who have played their best football since that loss, won’t be intimidated.  They are averaging 42 points per game over their past four games and are only allowing 7.5 points per game during that stretch.  The winner gets Hillsbourgh (Tampa) or Armwood.  This game will also be broadcast on 104.9 FM in Gainesville.
  • Newberry at Union County (Lake Butler) – It’s a top-five match-up in Lake Butler for the right to move on to the state semifinals.  These two teams played just two weeks ago and it took a 45-yard field goal by Carl Alexander to pull out a 10-7 victory against the visitors.  Union County (11-0) hasn’t always been impressive, but they continue finding ways to win.  Their defense, which has posted three shutouts, including one last week against Crescent City (21-0) and the home crowd will make this a tough one.  But the Panthers (8-3) and senior running back Ra’kheem Hoyt (1,089 yards) could keep the Tigers from advancing to the state semifinals for the second consecutive year.  Join Union County Radio (107.9 FM in Lake Butler) for the call.
  • Bishop Kenny at Baker County (Glen St. Mary) – The Crusaders (8-3) went on the road to knock off state-ranked Ponte Vedra, 16-13.  They’re on the road again because they lost this game the first time at Baker County, 49-35.  However, in that 5A-District 3 championship game, Bishop Kenny had four turnovers and had two punts blocked.  The winner gets to play a top five team next week (Tallahassee Godby or Wakulla) for the right to play for the state semifinals.  But tonight the Wildcats (9-2) hope that home-field advantage will give them that opportunity.  Join Marty Pallman, “The Voice of the Bishop Kenny Crusaders,” for all the action. www.1010xl.com
  • St. Augustine at Columbia (Lake City) – This is one of the best games in the state tonight.  It’s another top-five match-up (one of nine around the state).  The Yellow Jackets (11-0) are led by quarterback Sandon Mims and running back Levent Sands, who rushed for 261 yards in a win against Ridgeview (Orange Park) in the opening round.  But the Tigers (10-1) have a stingy defense, which has posted four shutouts this season, to go along with Jacksonville State commit Jayce Barber, who has thrown for 1,300 yards with 13 TD’s and only two interceptions, and Ronald Timmons, who has over 1,000 yard rushing. http://www.1420sports.com/
  • Bolles (Jacksonville) at South Sumter (Bushnell) – The defending 4A champion Bulldogs (10-1) go on the road to face a Raiders (11-0) team that is averaging 47.5 points per game.  Bolles has won a state-record 11 state titles.  They’ll be ready.  Last week South Sumter held off a furious Raines (Jacksonville) rally that came down to the final play.  After a TD, the Vikings failed to convert a two-point play and South Sumter survived, 29-28.  Both teams are ranked in the top three of the state in Class 4A.  The winner will likely represent the north in the 4A title game in two weeks. http://www.sportsradiojax.com/pages/bollesfootball.html
  • Glades Day at Dade Christian – REGIONAL FINAL 2A – The Gators and Crusaders, winner advances to the state semi game. Join Mike D with Sugar 900 am
  • Milton vs Navarre – Region Semifinal between Milton and Navarre

Prep Zone Power Poll – 2012 Football #12

GAINESVILLE – Now that the regular season is over, and with the FHSAA state football playoffs beginning this week, every team in this week’s Prep Zone Power Poll began preparation for the postseason.

GHS (10-0), which completed its first undefeated regular season since 1972, remained No 1. The Hurricanes, who received all seven first-place votes, will host Hernando (Brooksville) in the first round of the Class 6A state playoffs this Friday.

First Coast (Jacksonville) (10-0), which played in last year’s Class 7A state title game, remained second. The Bucs host Buchholz (Gainesville) in this week’s regional quarterfinals.

However, Columbia (Lake City) continued to climb in the polls as they moved up one spot and into a tie with the Bucs for the No. 2 spot. The Tigers (9-1), whose only loss was on the road by three points to #1 GHS, will host #17 Bartram Trail (St. Johns) (8-2) in the first round of the 6A playoffs.

St. Augustine (10-0) is ranked fourth. The Yellow Jackets open at home against No. 15 Ridgeview (Orange Park) (9-1) in the 6A playoffs.

South Sumter rounds out the top five. The Raiders (10-0), who averaging 49 points per game, will host #18 Raines (Jacksonville) (8-2) in the 4A regional semifinals.

Trinity Catholic (Ocala) (7-3), the only team to lose in last week’s poll, fell out of this week’s poll. Despite the loss, the previously #14 ranked Celtics, who lost at Palmetto, 27-7, will open up against Melbourne Central Catholic in the first round of the 3A playoffs.

University Christian (Jacksonville) (9-1) moved into the rankings for the first time this season following a 47-6 win over Cedar Creek Christian. UCS, which won its first district title since 1994, will host Florida A&M (Tallahassee) in the first round of the 2A state playoffs.

Baker County (Glen St. Mary) (8-2) also moved into the rankings at No. 20. The Wildcats, the 5A-District 3 champion, will host Creekside (St. Johns) this Friday.

The Prep Zone Power Poll ranks the top 20 high school football, basketball and baseball teams (regardless of classification) across 26 counties in north Florida (Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Citrus, Clay, Columbia, Dixie, Duval, Flagler, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Hernando, Jefferson, Lafayette, Lake, Levy, Marion, Nassau, Putnam, Sumter, St. Johns, Suwannee, Taylor, Union & Volusia counties). It is voted on weekly by sportswriters and sportscasters.
