Gainesville rolls past Armwood, 42-10

by: Mike Ridaught

There’s no place like home.

Last year, the nationally-ranked Armwood Hawks edged Gainesville, 17-14, in Seffner, in the Class 6A Regional Finals, en route to winning the state championship (on the field).

But on Friday night, the roles were reversed.

The unbeaten Purple Hurricanes, also nationally-ranked, welcomed the Hawks, and the home team didn’t disappoint.

Led by a dominant rushing performance, against an Armwood defense that had only allowed 21 points in its last three games, the ‘Canes (13-0) steamrolled the Hawks, 42-10.

“We didn’t let momentum get us” said Gainesville coach James Thomson, who referred to GHS’ two fumbles in the opening quarter, one of which led to a 32-yard field goal by Nick Feely that gave the Hawks (9-4) a 3-0 lead late in the first quarter. “We fought back.”

They fought back with a vengeance, scoring 35 unanswered points.

Senior running back Ralph Webb’s 20-yard TD run at the end of the first quarter gave the ‘Canes a 7-3 lead. It was one of three scores on the night for Webb, who finished with 207 yards rushing.

Backfield mate Tony James had a 28-yard TD run late in the first half to give GHS a 21-3 lead at the break. The junior added 128 yards rushing.

“We’re unstoppable together,” said James. “He’s lightning, and I’m thunder.”

Meanwhile, Gainesville ended the season unbeaten at home and improved to 30-1 since 2009.

“This meant a lot to our seniors,” said Webb. “We knew this was our last game at Citizen’s Field so we wanted to come out and leave it all out on the field.”

Gainesville will now travel to Navarre, which upset Lake City Columbia, 28-21.

November 30th, 7:00pm – Third round of the state football playoffs. Armwood (Seffner) at Gainesville Join Mike Ridaught (Play-by-play), Oak Hall football coach Scott McDaniel (Color) and Tyler TenBieg & Darrin Johnson (Sidelines). Pregame at 7:00pm, Kickoff at 7:30pm.

Final: Gainesville 42, Armwood 10

Radio:  FM-104.9 Gainesville/High Springs/Lake City

Last year’s state champs (on the field), Armwood has had its share of offensive difficulties of late, not scoring more than 19 points in a game since Oct. 12, a span of five contests. That said, the Hawks’ defense has been plenty good, only allowing second-week opponent Delray Beach American Heritage to surpass 21 points this season. Unbeaten Gainesville – on the other hand – has put up at least 21 points in every game but two, and those were victories against Columbia (17-14) and Madison County (14-9) – two teams still alive in the FHSAA playoffs. The speedy Hurricanes’ defense also has stepped up of late, not allowing more than 10 points to any opponent in the last month. This a rematch of a playoff game won by host Armwood, 17-14, a year ago. Florida fans in Gainesville get a sneak peek of two players – Armwood’s Alvin Bailey and Gainesville’s Chris Thompson – who will wear orange and blue next year.

A year ago, it was the Hawks, ranked No. 1 in Class 6A and No. 2 nationally according to ESPN, that benefited from a controversial late fumble to pull out a 17-14 victory to eliminate Gainesville in the Region 2 finals. Ever since that night, the Hurricanes (12-0) have been hungry for redemption… via: Gainesville Preps (Read More)

Prep Zone Power Poll – 2012 Football #13

GAINESVILLE – There was little movement, but one big surprise, in the top 10 of the Prep Zone Power Poll, which will be released one final time following the FHSAA Football Finals.

Gainesville (11-0) flexed its muscle and rolled to a 60-3 win over Hernando (Brooksville) in the first round of the Class 6A state playoffs. The Purple Hurricanes, seeking their first state title since 1980, received all seven first-place votes and remained on top of the poll.

However, First Coast (Jacksonville), which played in last year’s 7A state title game, lost at home to Buchholz (Gainesville), 10-7 (OT), and dropped 10 spots from second to 12th. The Bucs’ season ended at 10-1, while the Bobcats (6-5) actually received three votes in the poll following their fourth consecutive win.

That moves Columbia (Lake City), which was tied with First Coast in last week’s poll, into sole possession of second. The Tigers (10-1), whose only loss was on the road by three points to #1 GHS, defeated previous No. 17 Bartram Trail (St. Johns), 35-14, eliminating the Bears (8-3) from the 6A playoffs and knocking them out of the poll.

This week, Columbia hosts St. Augustine (11-0), which defeated previous #15 Ridgeview (Orange Park), 35-26, and moved up one spot to third in this week’s poll. The Panthers (9-2) were eliminated from the 6A playoffs and also dropped out of the rankings.

South Sumter (Bushnell) knocked another team out of this week’s poll. The Raiders (11-0) moved up one spot to 4th following a 29-28 victory over visiting Raines (Jacksonville), which saw its season end at 8-3 in the first round of the 4A state playoffs.

Fifth-ranked Fletcher (Neptune Beach) is back in the top five after a 24-21 win at Lake Brantley (Altamonte Springs).

Yulee (8-3), Trinity Catholic (Ocala) (8-3), Bishop Kenny (Jacksonville) (8-3) and Mainland (Daytona Beach) (8-3) all re-entered the poll at 16th, 17th & 20th, respectively, while Lafayette (Mayo) (9-2) is in the poll for the first time at No. 15.

The Prep Zone Power Poll ranks the top 20 high school football, basketball and baseball teams (regardless of classification) across 26 counties in north Florida (Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Citrus, Clay, Columbia, Dixie, Duval, Flagler, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Hernando, Jefferson, Lafayette, Lake, Levy, Marion, Nassau, Putnam, Sumter, St. Johns, Suwannee, Taylor, Union & Volusia counties). It is voted on weekly by sportswriters and sportscasters. This is the final poll until Dec. 18.
