Friday, November 21

It’s finally here. We’ve reached the second round of the state football playoffs. Why is week #2 so big? Because we’ve separated the pretenders from the contenders.

That was certainly evident in Class 8A – where every team that was either ranked or receiving votes in the AP state poll won their first-round game. Miramar, which was receiving votes, was the only team not to advance but that’s because they had to vacate their spot due to allegations that the former coach paid players to transfer to the school or make big hits on the field.

A total of 62 teams in eight different classes are in the state rankings, with a top 10 in the bigger classifications (5A-8A) and a top five in the smaller classes (1A-4A). Typically, there are a total of 60 teams ranked in the state football polls, but two different teams are tied for 10th to comprise a total of 62 teams in the final AP poll.

Of those 62 teams that are ranked, only eight lost on Friday night. However, of those eight teams that lost, four of them lost to a ranked team or a team receiving votes – No. 7 Boynton Beach lost at #2 Miami Central in 6A, #10t Hillsborough lost at No. 8 Venice in 6A, #10t Lake Gibson (Lakeland) lost at RV South Fort Myers in 6A, and No. 10 Wakulla (Crawfordville) lost at #4 West Florida (Pensacola) in 5A.

The next round offers up some great area match-ups: Lake Mary travels to First Coast (Jacksonville) in a battle of unbeaten (11-0) in Class 8A, Defending 4A state runners-up Bolles (Jacksonville), ranked 5th in 4A, is at RV Raines (Jacksonville), top-ranked South Sumter (Bushnell) hosts #7 Suwannee (Live Oak) in 5A, defending 3A state champion Trinity Christian (Jacksonville) is at Trinity Catholic (Ocala) in a match-up of top five teams and top-ranked Dixie County (Cross City) hosts No. 5 Union County (Lake Butler) in Class 1A.

And that’s just locally.

On a state level, there’s top-ranked Dr. Phillips and #5 Plant (Tampa) in 8A, #3 Lakeland at #4 Osceola (Kissimmee) in 7A, #3 Armwood (Seffner) is at #8 Venice in 6A, #2 Miami Central, defending state champions, hosts #4 Hallandale in 6A, #4 West Florida (Pensacola) at #6 Godby (Tallahassee) in 5A, #3 Cocoa is at #2 Clewiston in 4A, and #2 American Heritage (Delray Beach) is at #4 Westminster Christian (Miami).

football_orlando finalsHere’s a look at match-ups tonight involving teams in The Prep Zone’s coverage area, along with a preview of the some of the games:

Class 8A – Regional Semifinals

Lake Mary at First Coast (Jacksonville)

Preview: The Bucs, tied for first with Dr. Phillips (Orlando) in the state rankings, are led by FSU commit De’Andre Johnson. The senior QB is currently second all-time in the state in career passing yardage and he is 38-1 as a four-year starter. First Coast (11-0) is only allowing 10.4 points per game, while Lake Mary (11-0) is averaging 39.4 points per game. The Rams are led by QB Cannon Thompson, who is averaging 232 yards per game through the air with 31 TDs and only 7 INT.

Class 7A – Regional Semifinals

Fletcher (Neptune Beach) at Oakleaf (Orange Park)

Preview: The Senators (7-4) have been road warriors the past three years. Following last week’s win at 9-1 Oak Ridge (Orlando), Fletcher is now 8-2 on the road in the playoffs since 2011. They get District-3 foe Oakleaf (Orange Park), who beat the Senators, 28-7, on October 31, en route to their first unbeaten regular season in school history. Last week, the Knights (11-0) defeated Wekiva (Apopka), 17-14, for their first playoff win in school history.

Class 6A – Regional Semifinals

St. Augustine at Ed White (Jacksonville)

Sunlake (Land O’ Lakes) at Gainesville

Preview: This is a rematch of last year’s opening round game which GHS won, 17-14, thanks to its special teams. The Purple Hurricanes rallied from a 10-7 deficit to win by returning a punt for a score, blocking a punt and a game-winning 42-yard FG. Last week, the ‘Canes (6-5) defeated Mitchell (New Port Richey), 24-17, thanks to big plays. After a goal-line stand, QB Caelan Christian (2o TDs & only 5 INT), threw a 99-yard TD pass to Dock Luckie. Gainesville also got a pick-6 from sophomore Raijuahn Alexander.

The Seahawks (9-2) eliminated Vanguard (Ocala), 24-6. They had six quarterback sacks and did not turn the ball over. They also forced three turnovers and scored 21 unanswered points to advance.

Edgewater (Orlando) at Mainland (Daytona Beach)

Class 5A – Regional Semifinals

Bishop Kenny (Jacksonville) at Clay (Green Cove Springs)

Preview: Last year’s game set the state record for combined points in a 74-73 regulation win for Clay, which advanced all the way to the 5A state championship game after the second round win. Bishop Kenny QB John Wolford set the national record for most individual yards of total offense (773), but Wolford is now at Wake Forest. The Crusaders (9-1) still have star power in LB/WR Charles Wade, while QB Jackson Bradley threw five touchdown passes last week against Palatka.

The Blue Devils (10-1) lost Wes Weeks to graduation, and they lost outstanding RB Bilal Aly in Week #1 to an injury. However, QB J.T. Turner and RB Colin Wilson have helped lead Clay to 315 yards per game on the ground this season, which makes it tough for the opposing team to get the ball back. The Crusaders are averaging 35.4 points per game since their only loss Oct. 10 to district foe Westside (Jacksonville), but the Blue Devils, who have won 10 in a row at home, have given up 22 or less points in eight of their 11 games. They have won six in a row since a 35-21 loss at Class 7A & unbeaten Oakleaf (Orange Park) on Sept. 26.

Suwannee (Live Oak) at South Sumter (Bushnell)

Preview: The Bulldogs (10-1) won their first district football title in 11 years but they had to rally in Week #1 to keep their postseason hopes alive. Suwannee (10-1) overcame a 24-6 third-quarter deficit to beat Zephyrills, while South Sumter, ranked No. 1 in the state in 5A, came up with a couple of big stops in the red zone to edge North Marion (Citra), 16-12. Last year the Raiders (11-0), who just finished off their third straight unbeaten regular season, dominated the Bulldogs, 31-12.

Class 4A – Regional Finals

Florida High (Tallahassee) at Madison County

Bolles (Jacksonville) at Raines (Jacksonville)

Class 3A – Regional Finals

Trinity Christian (Jacksonville) at Trinity Catholic (Jacksonville)

Preview: The defending 3A state champion Conquerors (8-2) are loaded with D-I talent: Kevin Tolliver II (LSU commit), Jeffrey Holland (Undeclared), Victor Alexander (UCLA commit), Deontai Williams (Georgia commit), Ben Edwards (Stanford lean), and Kendrick Norton (Undeclared), just to name a few. Toliver, Holland, Norton, Edwards & Williams are ranked in the ESPN 300.

They are loaded on the defensive side of the ball, but if there is a weakness it’s that they “haven’t jelled or clicked like we should offensively. Our biggest thing is consistency,” said Head Coach Verlon Dorminey, who is trying to lead Trinity Christian to back-to-back state titles for the second time in his 24-year coaching career. Trinity Christian is one of only five Jacksonville-area programs to win consecutive state titles (2002-03). The Conquerors (8-2) have lost both games on the road to nationally-ranked teams – Buford (GA.) & IMG Academy (Bradenton).

Trinity Catholic has its own share of D-I talent: Darrien McNair (Mississippi State), Ulysees Gilbert (Cincinnati), Marquis Hendrix (Undeclared) and junior Jordan Woods. The Celtics’ (9-1) only blemish was a 45-22 loss at home to then No. 1 Clearwater Central Catholic on Sept. 26. Trinity Catholic, currently ranked third in 3A, will get a boost tonight with the return of RB London Gaskin, who was suspended for last week’s game against Providence (Jacksonville). Gaskin, who has 54 carries for 726 yards and 7 TDs, is a big-play receiver out of the backfield and threat in the return game. Trinity Catholic doesn’t have history on its side though as the Celtics have lost nine of their last 10 games to ranked teams (Trinity Christian is ranked 5th in 3A). This will be a physical battle by both defenses and the team that doesn’t make mistakes, turn the ball over, etc. will likely be the team that comes out on top.

Class 2A – Regional Finals

North Florida Christian (Tallahassee) at University Christian (Jacksonville)

Warner Christian (South Daytona) at Victory Christian Academy (Lakeland)

Class 1A – Regional Finals

Hamilton County (Jasper) at Trenton

Preview: The Tigers are the defending 1A state champions. Their only loss was at home to Dixie County, who they could face for the second consecutive year in the state semifinals. Trenton is tough to beat at home. In fact, the Bears snapped the Tigers (10-1) 22-game home winning streak in September, but they have won five in a row at home since, outscoring their opponents at home, 218-71, during that stretch.

The visiting Trojans recorded 4.5 sacks last week in a 34-21 win over Hilliard. They are physical and athletic. Quarterback Kentwan Daniels leads the team in rushing and has accounted for 18 TDs. Last year, the Tigers overcame five turnovers in beating the Trojans, 59-32, in Jasper. Hamilton County has been ranked as high as No. 2 in the state rankings, while Trenton is currently #2 in the state behind Dixie County.

Union County (Lake Butler) at Dixie County (Cross City)

Preview: The Tigers rolled to a 55-0 win at Crescent City last week behind the passing of Caleb Cox, who threw for 330 yards and four TDs. The Tigers (9-2) have had their backs against the wall the last few weeks of the season after a 30-18 loss at home to Dixie County on Oct. 3. In that game, Union County had seven turnovers. It was the first win for the Bears (11-0) in Lake Butler since 1986.

Dixie County, which has won 22 of its last 23 games, had over 300 yards rushing in a 40-9 win over Taylor (Pierson). Their defense only allowed 142 yards of offense, but it will be much tougher tonight against a Tigers’ team that has gotten better as they season has gone alone and they have outscored their opponents, 231-45, since the loss to Dixie County.

Prep Zone Power Poll – 2014 Football Poll #13

mainlandNationally-ranked Mainland still on top

Gainesville – We separated the pretenders from the contenders in Week #1 as most of the teams in the Prep Zone Power Poll moved on to the second round.

Nationally-ranked Mainland (Daytona Beach) remained No. 1. QB Denzel Houston threw for three TDs and RB Adrian Killins rushed for 163 yards and three more scores as the Bucs, who have given up less than 10 points in all but two games this season, received all 10 first-place votes following a 42-7 win over RV South Lake (Groveland) in the opening round of the 6A state playoffs.

In 8A, quarterback De’Andre Johnson was 16-of-27 for 287 yards and two TDs, Nos. 119 and 120 of his career, as First Coast (Jacksonville) defeated previous #19 DeLand, 34-19. The Bucs (11-0) remained second, while the Bulldogs (7-4), who only trailed on the road 15-13 at the half, fell out of the poll.

Trinity Christian (Jacksonville), which began the season nationally-ranked, remained third. The defending 3A state champions defeated Maclay (Tallahassee), 44-13, in the 3A-Region 1 Semifinals. Quarterback Billy Cobb completed 16-of-25 passes for 392 yards and six touchdowns for the Conquerors (8-2).

The top-ranked team in the Class 5A state poll survived a scare.

South Sumter (Bushnell) held on for a 16-12 win against previous No. 13 North Marion in the Class 5A-Region 2 Quarterfinals, and the Raiders (11-0) remained fourth in this week’s poll. J.T. Taylor rushed for 140 yards on 25 carries and the Raiders’ defense, which is allowing just nine points per game, kept the Colts out of the end zone on two trips in the red zone.

North Marion’s season comes to an end at 8-3. The Colts, who dropped five spots to No. 18, finished with 488 yards of total offense in the loss.

Rounding out the top five is Clay (Green Cove Springs). The Blue Devils (10-1) routed Westside (Jacksonville), 46-6, as J.T. Turner and Colin Wilson combined for 302 yards rushing and six TDs in 5A-Region 1 Quarterfinals.

While the top five remained the same, there was a little movement in the second five.

Unbeaten Oakleaf (Orange Park) (11-0), which won its first playoff game in school history with a 17-14 win over Wekiva (Apopka) in 7A, remained sixth, but Trinity Catholic (Ocala) moved up one spot to seventh.

The Celtics (9-1), who scored on offense, defense and special teams in a 49-14 win over Providence (Jacksonville) in 3A, moved one spot ahead of St. Augustine, which dropped to eighth in the poll despite a 33-21 win over previous No. 14 Columbia (Lake City) in the 6A-Region 1 Quarterfinals.

Also, Bolles (Jacksonville) and Dixie County (Cross City) flip-flopped, but by only four total voting points. The Bulldogs moved up one spot to ninth while the Bears dropped to 10th.

Bolles (8-2) advanced with a 63-0 win at Umatilla. The defending 4A state runner-up ‘Dogs get a rematch with Raines, which defeated them, 34-33, during the regular season

Meanwhile, the state’s top-ranked team in 1A, Dixie County, also moved on after rushing for over 300 yards in a 40-9 win over Taylor (Pierson). The Bears (10-0) get the Tigers of Union County for a second time this year, but this time they get them at home.

Madison County, Fletcher and Union County are all back in the top 20 at Nos. 17, 19 and 20, respectively. Flagler Palm Coast (8-3), which lost at unbeaten Lake Mary in 8A, joins Columbia as the only two teams to fall out of the poll.

There are eight games on Friday involving top 20 match-ups: #19 Fletcher at #6 Oakleaf in Class 7A, #8 St. Augustine at #11 Ed White (6A), #12 Suwannee at #4 South Sumter & #15 Bishop Kenny at #5 Clay (5A), #9 Bolles at #13 Raines (4A), and #16 Hamilton County at #14 Trenton & Union County at Dixie County (1A), while #3 Trinity Christian plays at #7 Trinity Catholic (3A) in a match-up of top 10 teams.

Trophy ShopOur Trophy Shop Athlete-of-the-Week Presented by State Farm agent Mark McGriff for the week of November 10 is Sammy Mueller* of the P.K. Yonge (Gainesville) volleyball team.

sammy_mueller_pky

*The junior setter had the final point of the season, which ended with a 3-0 sweep of Pine Crest (Fort Lauderdale) in the 4A state title game, as P.K. Yonge (30-2) won its first state volleyball title since 2002. Mueller saved her best for last as she finished with seven kills, six digs and 27 assists in the state championship match. She had 33 assists in a 3-0 sweep of Pensacola Catholic in the state semifinals.

Past winners:

November 3 – Alena Kraus (Gainesville)

The freshman helped GHS to a fourth-place finish at the Class 3A state meet in Stuart.  Kraus won her first state title by winning the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:49.81.  She also finished third in the 100 free (51.05).  Kraus set a school record in both events.

October 27 –  Kirschtine Balbuena (Eastside)

The freshman won both the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke at the Class 2A-District 4 meet to help the Lady Rams win their first district title since 2009 (when Eastside won state). Balbuena set the school record with a time of 57.77 in the backstroke, which would have placed her in the top eight at state last year. Both times earned her the top seed in this weekend’s regional meet.

October 20 – Caysaun Wakeley (Santa Fe)

Despite falling in triple overtime at North Marion last Friday night that ended Santa Fe’s postseason hopes, Wakeley was a big reason the Raiders were close in a 35-28 loss.  The junior outside linebacker recorded 14 tackles, had one sack and added two tackles for a loss.  On offense, Wakeley finished with five carries for 20 yards rushing, plus both touchdowns for the Raiders (5-3) in overtime on two 4-yard scoring runs.

October 13 – Ahmad Ivey (Gainesville)

Ivey had a big night as the Hurricanes defeated Vanguard (Ocala), 36-29, in a key Class 6A-District 5 game. The senior had a pair of TDs, returned a kickoff 82 yards for a score and had the game-winning interception in the end zone on 4th-and-goal with 18.2 seconds left. Ivey, who leads the state with an average of 45.1 yards per kick return, also finished with 77 yards rushing on only 12 carries, including a 20-yard reverse on a 3rd-and-7 to keep the ‘Canes game-winning drive alive in the fourth quarter.

October 6 – Coby Weiss (Buchholz)

Weiss drilled a 40-yard field goal as time expired to lift Buchholz to a 23-20 win over Gainesville, which snapped the Bobcats’ five-year losing streak to their rival. The sophomore, who made three on the night, had made a 41-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to tie the game.

September 29 – Monroe Thornton III (St. Francis Catholic)

Thornton returned a kickoff 70 yards for a touchdown, just after Oak Hall had scored the first touchdown of the game, and it gave the Wolves the spark they needed in a 49-14 win over their rival. The junior finished with 181 all-purpose yards as St. Francis won its third consecutive game for the first time in three years. Thornton had scoring runs of 31 and 10 yards and also had eight tackles on defense.

September 22 – Courtney Chappell (P.K. Yonge)

Chappell had 18 kills, 45 digs, 33 service points, six aces and four blocks in four games for the Blue Wave. The senior helped lead the Blue Wave to a 4-0 week with wins against defending 5A state champion Bishop Moore (Orlando), 7A Tallahassee Leon, 7A Lake Nona, a regional finalist in 2013, and 2013 3A state runners-up The First Academy (Orlando).

September 15 – Antwan Durn (Union County)

Durn broke current Buffalo RB C.J. Spiller’s school record with seven touchdowns as the Tigers (4-0) defeated Interlachen, 59-0. The junior ran for 204 yards on 15 carries and also had one reception for 30 yards.

September 8 – Julian Robinson (Dixie County)

In a match-up of the top two teams in the state in Class 1A, Robinson rose to the occasion and ran for 316 yards on 28 carries and four TDs as the Bears snapped the Tigers’ 22-game home winning streak with a 48-25 win. The junior, who has an area leading 727 yards rushing, had scoring runs of 63, 52, 50 and 32 yards.

September 1 – Charles Strong (P.K. Yonge)

In his varsity debut, the freshman ran for a game-high 119 yards and a score. Strong, who averaged 9.9 yards per carry, helped lead the Blue Wave to their first 1-0 start since 2011 with a 35-0 win at Bell.

August 25 – Caelan Christian (Gainesville)

Despite a 44-43 loss in overtime to state-ranked Columbia (Lake City), Christian had a career game for the Hurricanes. The junior completed 28-of-38 for 317 yards and three touchdowns, along with a rushing score, as the ‘Canes amassed 531 yards of total offense. Christian connected with seven different receivers on the night, including a 25-yard touchdown pass to Dock Luckie in overtime.

Despite struggles, Gainesville last Alachua County team standing

A 5-5 season would seem like a mediocre season to most high school football teams.  And with the success the Gainesville Purple Hurricanes have achieved in the past six seasons, a 5-5 regular season record would normally be seen as a disappointment.

But here are the Purple Hurricanes, moving on to the Class 6A regional semifinals after last week’s 24-17 win over New Port Richey Mitchell at Citizen’s Field.  Gainesville will be back at home this Friday night against Land O’Lakes Sunlake in the 6A-Region 2 Semifinals.

Despite a .500 regular season record, GHS rolled through District 5-6A, beating their district opponents by an average of 21 points a game in winning their third consecutive district title and fifth in six years.  That earned the ‘Canes a home playoff game last week against a tough Mitchell team making it’s first playoff appearance.

Gainesville’s win was highlighted by a 99-yard TD pass from Caelan Christian to Dock Luckie, coming right after the Purple Hurricanes defense held Mitchell on downs at the 1-yard line.  Gainesville coach Mark Latsko says it was a great play in a tough situation.

“You don’t really want to be in that situation,” he said.  “It was actually about 99 and a half yards, but Dock ran a great route and Caelan stood tall in the pocket and made a great throw.”

“Yeah we’ve given up some points this year,” Latsko said.  “We have won the games we were supposed to win, and we have been showing improvement as the season goes on.”

Despite not winning the city title for the first time since 2008, Gainesville is back in the playoffs for the sixth year in a row.  Latsko says the loss to Buchholz on a last-play field goal hurt, but the Purple Hurricanes re-focused to win another district title.

“Obviously if there’s one game you’d like to have back it’s that Buchholz game, and we don’t like to talk about it much,” he said.  “But we just moved forward and kept working hard and I couldn’t be more proud of how this team reacted and that they are still playing.”

Two years removed from a 14-1 season and a trip to the 6A state championship game, a 6-5 record does look kind of strange for this Gainesville team.  But despite the loss to Buchholz, the Purple Hurricanes have dropped games to playoff teams Columbia (6A), Madison County (4A), Tallahassee Lincoln (7A) and Crawfordville Wakulla (5A).

“We may get spoiled at times, because it’s hard to win a football game,” Latsko added.  “The kids are the ones that we have to credit, because there’s no sense of entitlement and they work hard in the summer and during the spring and camps and they deserve all the accolades.”

Coming up this Friday is a tough Sunlake team, who lost to Gainesville at Citizen’s Field in the 6A regional semifinals back in 2011.

Latsko says this year’s GHS team wants to get past the second round, where the Purple Hurricanes season ended a year ago with a loss at Spring Hill Springstead.

“We have developed a bit of a playoff rivalry with Sunlake,” Latsko said.  “We had a close game a few years ago.  We want to get past the second round, that isn’t good enough this year. And if you move on to the third round, now you’re playing with the big boys.”

If Gainesville beats Sunlake on Friday night, the Purple Hurricanes would host Seffner Armwood or travel to Venice in the 6A-Region 2 Final on Friday, November 28.

You can hear coverage of the Gainesville-Sunlake game this Friday night from Citizens Field with Chuck Dowling, Oak Hall head football coach Scott McDaniel and Tyler TenBieg beginning with a 7:15 pregame show on The Prep Zone.  Kickoff is set for 7:30.
