Port St. Joe vs. Hamilton County – 1A State Championship preview

football_orlando finalsBy Marty Pallman

The FHSAA Class 1A state championship game has been a boon for smaller rural schools in the Panhandle and North Central Florida. This year’s game at the Citrus Bowl will feature one team which hasn’t been to this point in almost 40 years against a team with more recent success.

Hamilton County (11-3) is the North Central Florida representative after winning on the road at defending 1A state champion Trenton, 45-20, in the regional final before winning at previously unbeaten and top-ranked Dixie County, 18-12, in last week’s state semifinals. The Trojans are in the state championship for the first time since 1975, when Hamilton County lost to Palmetto, 13-11, in the 2A state championship game.

Blair Armstrong is in his second year as Hamilton County’s head coach. He is very happy about the Trojans’ run to Orlando, as it came against the best teams in Florida in 1A.

“Last week, we beat a Dixie County team that beat us during the season,” Armstrong said. “It was a very defensive game, but we got the win and we are excited and proud to be playing in Orlando on Friday night.”

Hamilton County finished 1-9 in 2012, the year before Armstrong arrived. In his first season, the Trojans were district champs and advanced to the regional final, losing to eventual state champion Trenton, 59-32. Armstrong says there’s a good group of upperclassmen that have brought this program back.

“We (Hamilton County) have a good group of seniors and juniors that have really bought in,” Armstrong said. “There is only so much we as coaches can do, but this group of players has really stepped up and made our job very easy.”

trojans_hamilton_countyHamilton County is led by senior Lamarcus Webb, a two-way athlete who has 1,310 all purpose yards and 17 touchdowns while adding 34 tackles and three interceptions on defense. Webb also returned an interception 90 yards for a TD to put the game against Dixie County out of reach.

Junior quarterback Kentwan Daniels has rolled up 1,820 total yards and 21 TD’s. Senior Ethan Land leads the Trojans defense with 106 tackles, including 26 for loss, and Deangelo Robinson added 95 tackles while leading Hamilton County with 13 sacks. Armstrong knows his defense faces a tough challenge in Port St. Joe, led by their running back Jarkeice Davis, who has rushed for 2,014 yards and 34 touchdowns.

“They (Port St. Joe) have one running back who has rushed for over 2,000 yards, and a couple of others who aren’t too shabby,” Armstrong added. “I played them when I was in high school (at Jefferson County) and they have a great tradition and always play tough.”

Port St. Joe (11-2) is familiar with state football titles, winning three championships in 2005, 1984, and 1971. The Tiger Sharks defeated Fort Meade 38-31 nine years ago to win the 1A state title under current coach John Palmer, defeating Fort Meade 38-31. Palmer returned this year to Port St. Joe after some time away and is happy for the entire community.

“The atmosphere is euphoric right now,” Palmer said. “There are plenty of people who are happy and proud and it’s just a great time up here in Port St. Joe this week.”port st. joe

Port St. Joe advanced to Orlando after winning road games at South Walton and last year’s 1A state runner-up Blountstown, before returning home to blank Vernon 35-0 in last week’s state semifinal game.

In the win over Vernon, Davis and Cole Cryderman both ran for two touchdowns and combined for 198 yards on the ground and the Sharks’ defense was dominant in posting the shutout. Palmer credits Port St. Joe’s trip to the state championship game in his first year back to the previous coaching staff.

“You have to give credit to the previous staff before I came back for having these players ready,”Palmer said. “We haven’t had any problems with getting these kids ready to go or having them buy into our system.”

It’s not much of a secret that Port St. Joe is going to run the ball. The Tiger Sharks have rushed for over 3,700 yards on 521 carries with 48 touchdowns and have three running backs over 499 yards rushing, led by Davis. Port St. Joe quarterback TJ Williams has completed only 31 passes all season, but 10 of those are for touchdowns.

Palmer says this Port St. Joe team has some differences and similarities to his 2005 state championship squad.

“We run a very similar offense and do a lot of things similar to that team,” Palmer said. “But while we aren’t as big on the offensive line now as we were in 2005, we are quicker off the ball now.”

Cryderman is a threat in all three phases for Port St. Joe, leading the defense with 105 tackles and is also 5 for 7 on field goals and 36-for-46 on extra points. Alvin Dempsey leads the Port St. Joe defense with six QB sacks.

The 1A State Championship Game from the Citrus Bowl in Orlando between Hamilton County and Port St. Joe kicks off Friday night at 7:07 p.m.

Wednesday, December 3

We head into the final month of the year with the high school football state championship pictures coming into focus a little more. Classifications 1A-4A will play their FHSAA state championship games this weekend at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando. Class 5A-8A will play state semifinal games on Friday, with the winners advancing to next weekend’s tournament in O-town. Half of the classifications have teams still playing that won a state title last year & look to defend –Miami Central (6A), American Heritage (Plantation) in 5A, Booker T. Washington (Miami) (4A) and Trinity Christian (Jacksonville) in 3A. In fact, BTW & Miami Central are looking for their third straight state title.

football_orlando finalsThe nationally-ranked Tornadoes go for the 3-peat against Bolles (Jacksonville) in the 4A state title game. It will mark the fourth consecutive year that the Tornadoes and ‘Dogs have met in the championship game. That ties an FHSAA record set by Baker & Glades Day (Belle Glade), both nicknamed the Gators. The Gators played against each other from 1982-1986. In fact, Glades Day made seven straight appearances in the state championship game, but the ‘Gators’ only won two of them (’82 and ’86).

BTW defeated Bolles, 40-21, last year, and 35-7 in 2012. But don’t ever count out Bolles under legendary coach Corky Rogers. He now stands at 444 victories, which is 5th on the all-time list nationally among active coaches, and he improved his record to 74-14 in the postseason after last Friday’s win in Boot Hill at Madison County.

While he may not finish first on the all-time wins list, there is one record that is more likely to stand permanently on Rogers’ resume – his record in the state semifinals is perfect. Rogers, who has been coaching at Bolles since 1989, improved to 15-0 in state semifinal games after Bolles defeated Madison County, 34-15, in the 4A state semifinals. Tim Harris, Jr., has done a great job getting the Tornadoes back to the state title game in his first season as head coach, but Rogers has led Bolles to four straight finals and has led the ‘Dogs to 10 of their 11 football state titles.

Bolles is one of five teams left in The Prep Zone’s coverage area, joining defending 3A state champion Trinity Christian (Jacksonville), Mainland (Daytona Beach) in 6A, Suwannee (Live Oak) in 5A, and Hamilton County (Jasper), which is playing for the 1A state title this weekend in Orlando.

Unbeaten Mainland (Daytona Beach), the #1-ranked team in the Prep Zone Power Poll, is hosting Miami Central (12-1) in the 6A state semifinals. Both teams are nationally ranked. According to prognosticator Joe Pinkos, the Bucs (13-0) are a 14-point underdog at home against the two-time defending champs. Miami Central dominated Armwood (Seffner), 52-7, in last year’s 6A title game. The Rockets defeated Gainesville, 37-14, for the title in 2012. They have won three state titles since 2010. Meanwhile, the Bucs, who won their only state football title in 2003, is led by sophomore QB Denzel Houston on offense and senior DB Meiko Dotson on a defense that is only allowing 8.8 points per game. Miami Central is averaging 35.8 points per game. Last year, Miami Central defeated Mainland, 28-15, in Miami. This year, the game is in Daytona.

Trinity ChristianAnother game involving a former nationally-ranked team is in Class 3A. That’s where Trinity Christian (Jacksonville), which is loaded with D-I players and began the season in the national rankings, looks to defend its state title against American Heritage (Delray Beach). Pinkos likes American Heritage in this one by six.

Both of these teams have combined for seven state football titles since 2002, but, like Corky Rogers, don’t count out Trinity Christian coach Verlon Dorminey, who probably gets overshadowed because he’s in the same city as Rogers. Dorminey is seeking to back-to-back state titles for the second time in his career at TC. He’s collected state titles in 2002, 2003, 2010 & 2013.

The Conquerors defeated Clearwater Central Catholic, 34-7, in last year’s title game. CCC, which has been ranked No. 1 in 3A for most of the season after TC lost early, lost to the 2nd-ranked Patriots in the state semifinals, 63-13. In all fairness to CCC, they were playing without star quarterback Jeff Smith (Boston College commit) due to injury. Nonetheless, American Heritage, the 2011 state champions, is ranked No. 2 in the state in Class 3A. They also knocked off #4 Westminster Christian (Miami), 23-7, in the regional finals.

Kudos to Hamilton County (Jasper). The Trojans advanced to their first state championship game appearance since 1975 with an 18-12 win at top-ranked Dixie County (Cross City) in the Class 1A state semifinals. They are certainly battle tested, with a win at defending state champion Trenton in the regional finals. Beating the Nos. 1 & 2 teams on the road will give them confidence going against Port St. Joe, which enters the game unranked, along with Hamilton County. The Sharks, who have posted back-to-back shutouts in the postseason, are seeking their fourth state football title in school history while the Trojans are seeking their first.

Finally, I’ll be on the call (NFHS Network.com) for our other area team – Suwannee (Live Oak). The Bulldogs followed up a win on the road at No. 1 South Sumter (Bushnell) with a 37-0 thumping of Lakewood (St. Pete). This week they host Godby (Tallahassee), which eliminated Bishop Kenny (Jacksonville), . Both teams have won four state football titles in school history. The Cougars won the 2012 state title with a narrow 21-20 win over Immokalee. They also won state titles in 1976 and back-to-back in 1986-87. Suwannee won four in a row under coach Mike Pittman from 1987-1990. I’ll have more on this match-up, including my conversation with Godby first-year coach Todd Lanter, on Thursday.

Trophy Shop Athlete-of-the-Week

Trophy ShopOur Trophy Shop Athlete-of-the-Week Presented by State Farm agent Mark McGriff for the week of November 24 is Denzel Washington* of the Suwannee (Live Oak) football team.

Suwannee_Bulldogs

*The senior ran for 251 yards and a pair of touchdowns as the Bulldogs (12-1) advanced to the state semifinals for the first time since 1999 with a 37-0 win over Lakewood (St. Pete) in the FHSAA Class 5A state playoffs. Washington, who scored on a 61-yard run in the first half, had eight runs of 10 or more yards and four carries for 20 or more.

Past winners:

November 17 – Quade Locke (Dixie County)

Locke made big plays on the defensive side of the football as the Bears advanced to the state semifinals for the second straight season in Class 1A with a 50-37 victory over Union County (Lake Butler) in the regional finals.  The senior middle linebacker had 15 tackles with five assists and two interceptions, including a 95-yard pick-six.  He was part of a defense that finished with five sacks and four interceptions.

November 10 – Sammy Mueller (P.K. Yonge)

The junior setter had the final point of the season, which ended with a 3-0 sweep of Pine Crest (Fort Lauderdale) in the 4A state title game, as P.K. Yonge (30-2) won its first state volleyball title since 2002. Mueller saved her best for last as she finished with seven kills, six digs and 27 assists in the state championship match. She had 33 assists in a 3-0 sweep of Pensacola Catholic in the state semifinals.

November 3 – Alena Kraus (Gainesville)

The freshman helped GHS to a fourth-place finish at the Class 3A state meet in Stuart. Kraus won her first state title by winning the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:49.81. She also finished third in the 100 free (51.05). Kraus set a school record in both events.

October 27 – Kirschtine Balbuena (Eastside)

The freshman won both the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke at the Class 2A-District 4 meet to help the Lady Rams win their first district title since 2009 (when Eastside won state). Balbuena set the school record with a time of 57.77 in the backstroke, which would have placed her in the top eight at state last year. Both times earned her the top seed in this weekend’s regional meet.

October 20 – Caysaun Wakeley (Santa Fe)

Despite falling in triple overtime at North Marion last Friday night that ended Santa Fe’s postseason hopes, Wakeley was a big reason the Raiders were close in a 35-28 loss. The junior outside linebacker recorded 14 tackles, had one sack and added two tackles for a loss. On offense, Wakeley finished with five carries for 20 yards rushing, plus both touchdowns for the Raiders (5-3) in overtime on two 4-yard scoring runs.

October 13 – Ahmad Ivey (Gainesville)

Ivey had a big night as the Hurricanes defeated Vanguard (Ocala), 36-29, in a key Class 6A-District 5 game. The senior had a pair of TDs, returned a kickoff 82 yards for a score and had the game-winning interception in the end zone on 4th-and-goal with 18.2 seconds left. Ivey, who leads the state with an average of 45.1 yards per kick return, also finished with 77 yards rushing on only 12 carries, including a 20-yard reverse on a 3rd-and-7 to keep the ‘Canes game-winning drive alive in the fourth quarter.

October 6 – Coby Weiss (Buchholz)

Weiss drilled a 40-yard field goal as time expired to lift Buchholz to a 23-20 win over Gainesville, which snapped the Bobcats’ five-year losing streak to their rival. The sophomore, who made three on the night, had made a 41-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to tie the game.

September 29 – Monroe Thornton III (St. Francis Catholic)

Thornton returned a kickoff 70 yards for a touchdown, just after Oak Hall had scored the first touchdown of the game, and it gave the Wolves the spark they needed in a 49-14 win over their rival. The junior finished with 181 all-purpose yards as St. Francis won its third consecutive game for the first time in three years. Thornton had scoring runs of 31 and 10 yards and also had eight tackles on defense.

September 22 – Courtney Chappell (P.K. Yonge)

Chappell had 18 kills, 45 digs, 33 service points, six aces and four blocks in four games for the Blue Wave. The senior helped lead the Blue Wave to a 4-0 week with wins against defending 5A state champion Bishop Moore (Orlando), 7A Tallahassee Leon, 7A Lake Nona, a regional finalist in 2013, and 2013 3A state runners-up The First Academy (Orlando).

September 15 – Antwan Durn (Union County)

Durn broke current Buffalo RB C.J. Spiller’s school record with seven touchdowns as the Tigers (4-0) defeated Interlachen, 59-0. The junior ran for 204 yards on 15 carries and also had one reception for 30 yards.

September 8 – Julian Robinson (Dixie County)

In a match-up of the top two teams in the state in Class 1A, Robinson rose to the occasion and ran for 316 yards on 28 carries and four TDs as the Bears snapped the Tigers’ 22-game home winning streak with a 48-25 win. The junior, who has an area leading 727 yards rushing, had scoring runs of 63, 52, 50 and 32 yards.

September 1 – Charles Strong (P.K. Yonge)

In his varsity debut, the freshman ran for a game-high 119 yards and a score. Strong, who averaged 9.9 yards per carry, helped lead the Blue Wave to their first 1-0 start since 2011 with a 35-0 win at Bell.

August 25 – Caelan Christian (Gainesville)

Despite a 44-43 loss in overtime to state-ranked Columbia (Lake City), Christian had a career game for the Hurricanes. The junior completed 28-of-38 for 317 yards and three touchdowns, along with a rushing score, as the ‘Canes amassed 531 yards of total offense. Christian connected with seven different receivers on the night, including a 25-yard touchdown pass to Dock Luckie in overtime.
