Prep Zone Power Poll – 2014-15 Boys Basketball Poll #2

ProvidenceStallions remain on top, but Hawks close behind

Gainesville – Most of the top teams in the basketball Prep Zone Power Poll held serve.

In fact, 10 of the top 11 teams went undefeated for the week, with previous No. 4 Gainesville falling on a shot with 13 seconds to play at rival Buchholz (Gainesville), 68-67.

The battle for the top spot is equal to what it was in the preseason poll as top-ranked Providence (Jacksonville) edged No. 2 Lake Minneola in total voting points again, 138-135.

But a case for the #1 ranking could easily be made by both.

The unbeaten Class 3A Stallions (8-0) have wins over final four hopefuls 8A Dr. Phillips (Orlando) & 5A No. 6 Eastside (Gainesville). Providence received five of the seven first-place votes.

The 6A Hawks’ (6-1) only loss was at nationally-ranked No. 1 Montverde Academy, 81-71. Last week, Lake Minneola knocked off defending 8A state champion Winter Park, 86-65, and defending 2A state champion Orlando Christian Prep, 53-50.

Ed White (Jacksonville) remained third. The Commanders (6-0), unbeaten heading into its game this past Tuesday against Providence, handed No. 4 Bishop Kenny (Jacksonville) its only loss of the season, 55-47, on November 25.

The Crusaders (6-1) are one spot ahead of Jackson (Jacksonville), which moved up two spots to fifth following a 3-0 week which included a 71-40 win over district foe Raines (Jacksonville) on Saturday night. The Class 4A Tigers (7-1), coached by former Duval County star James Collins, already have wins over 8A #10 Sandalwood (Jacksonville), previous #18 & district rival Ribault (Jacksonville) & Eastside.

Bolles (Jacksonville), which was undefeated during the regular season last year, moved up two spots and is tied for sixth with the Rams (6-2) from Alachua County. The Bulldogs (5-0) will put their unbeaten record on the line on Friday night at home against #3 Ed White.

The loss at Buchholz dropped GHS (4-1) four spots to eighth, where they are tied with Baker County (Glen St. Mary). The Wildcats (6-0) moved up two spots after a 3-0 week.

Several teams dropped out of the rankings, which allowed a few more teams to get in.

Class 1A state semifinalist Chiefland (3-2), which was ranked 12th, dropped out following an 0-2 week, while 1A state runner-up Hamilton County (3-3), which was No. 15, went 1-2 and fell out of the poll.

Fort White, which won its first district title in school history last year en route to a 26-3 final record, lost its only game last week and fell out. The Class 4A Indians lost to Columbia (Lake City), which helped propel the Tigers (5-1) into the rankings at No. 13.

Columbia, which is in the same district with Gainesville & No. 19 Oakleaf (Orange Park), had a big week with wins against ranked teams Hamilton County, Fort White & Oakleaf. Their only loss was to #3 Ed White.

Despite a couple of wins in December, the Ribault (Jacksonville) Trojans (3-3) fell out of the rankings too as they barely got by Baldwin, 58-57, this past Monday and have struggled early in the season after losing several key players from last year.

Other newcomers include unbeaten Wolfson (Jacksonville) (7-0), which jumped all the way to No. 14 after receiving votes in the preseason poll, along with 8A Flagler Palm Coast (7-1), which is 16th, and 7A East Ridge (Clermont) (3-1), which defeated previous No. 16 Eustis, and Class 1A Hawthorne (5-0), who are both tied for 20th

The Prep Zone Power Poll ranks the top 20 high school football, basketball, baseball & softball teams (regardless of FHSAA classification) across 26 counties in North Florida (Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Citrus, Clay, Columbia, Dixie, Duval, Flagler, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Hernando, Jefferson, Lafayette, Lake, Levy, Madison, Marion, Nassau, Putnam, Sumter, St. Johns, Suwannee, Taylor, Union & Volusia counties). It is voted on weekly by sportswriters and sportscasters.

Bolles vs. Booker T. Washington – 4A State Championship preview

football_orlando finalsBy Marty Pallman

If it’s the 4A State Championship Game, it must be Booker T. Washington vs. Bolles.

The two programs will meet for a fourth consecutive year, which ties a state record, in the 4A title game on Saturday night at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando.

Bolles won the first meeting 33-25 in 2011 for the Bulldogs state record 11th state title and 10th state championship under long-time coach Corky Rogers, who is Florida’s leader in career wins. Booker T. Washington took the last two meetings rather easily though, rolling 35-7 in 2012 and pulling away to win 40-21 last year in the 4A state championship game.bolles-bulldogs

Tim Harris, Jr. is in his first year as Booker T. Washington coach, taking over for his father, Tim, Sr., who left the Tornadoes after last seasons state title to take a job as an assistant coach at the University of Miami. Harris says the transition between coaches has been extremely smooth.

“We really haven’t missed a beat with the coaching change,” Harris said. “We’ve just gone out there every day and worked hard and it shows as we will playing in the Citrus Bowl on Saturday night.”

Booker T. Washington (13-0) has won 39 games in a row, but none were as difficult as last Friday’s 14-12 win at Cocoa. Cocoa scored on the last play of the game to get within 2, but the Tornadoes defense stopped Cocoa quarterback Bruce Judson a yard short on the 2 point conversion attempt to see the win. While the winning streak is impressive, Harris doesn’t try to spend very much time focusing on that.

“It’s definitely an impressive streak, and we are very proud of it,” Harris said. “But if you get too wrapped up in those things you don’t focus as much on the little things, like winning one game at a time. We try to enjoy each win that night, and the move on.”

Offensively, Booker T. Washington has a nice mix between run and pass.

BTWRunning back Mark Walton is the Tornadoes leading rusher with 1,286 yards, a 7.0 yard average and 19 touchdowns. Quarterback Maurice Alexander has rushed for 365 yards and five TD’s, but more impressively has thrown for 2,513 yards and 25 touchdowns with only four interceptions.

Antonio Callaway leads the Booker T. Washington receivers with 818 yards and 7 touchdowns, while Vaquan Small leads the Tornadoes with 10 TD’s through the air. Alexander has had some big shoes to fill with replacing Treon Harris, who is now starting for the Florida Gators. Coach Tim Harris, Jr. says Alexander has done a fine job for this Washington team.

“There were some games earlier in the season where we weren’t really sure how Maurice was going to respond,” Harris said. “But we’ve found out when the lights are the brightest he does have some of what Treon had.”

The Washington defense is led by Andre Duncombe with 74 tackles, including 10 for loss, and 5 sacks. Devonaire Clarington leads the Tornadoes with six sacks.

As said earlier, Bolles (11-2) is certainly no stranger to state championships and championship game appearances. The Bulldogs have a state-record 11 state titles, 10 under Corky Rogers, who at age 70 is in his 26th year as head coach at Bolles.

The Bulldogs had to be road warriors again in the playoffs this year, after losing to Raines during the regular season. Bolles won at Umatilla, Raines, and the state semifinals at Madison County last week to advance back to Orlando. Rogers is now 15-0 in state semifinal games at Bolles.

Rogers credits a regular season schedule which included Niceville, Plantation American Heritage, North Marion and DeLand on getting this team ready for the postseason.

“I do feel like when you go against quality programs like that, it brings out the best in your team,” Rogers said. “Some of them were wins and some of them were victories, but it definitely gets you ready for a situation like we will face Saturday night.”

Like Washington, Bolles will mix it up on offense. Dexter Carter leads the Bulldogs in rushing with 862 yards and 13 touchdowns, while Christian Bermudez chips in 741 yards on the ground and 8 scores. Quarterback Joe Edden has only thrown for 1,334 yards, but has thrown 19 touchdowns and more importantly no interceptions. Terrell Moorer is Bolles leading receiver with 46 catches for 716 yards and 12 TD’s, while Carter adds 27 receptions and 7 scores through the air.

“We are going to miss guys like Dexter and Christian when graduation rolls around,” Rogers said. “Those guys have worked through injuries this year and through their career and have been great representatives of our school.”

Rogers says despite the coaching change for Booker T. Washington, there isn’t much different about this Tornadoes team.

“I guess there’s a touch of different people on there, but for the most part there’s not much difference with them,” Rogers said. “They still have excellent athletes are well-coached and are just a very good team.”

Defensively Bolles is led by Kyle Johnson with 161 tackles. Trenton McGhee adds 98 tackles and leads the team with 14 tackles for loss. Jordan Jackson leads the Bulldogs with 5 sacks. While Washington has handled Bolles fairly easily the last two years, never count out Rogers and his Bolles teams.

“We can’t turn the ball over, and we have to control the football to beat this team,” Rogers said. “I don’t know if we are going to be able to score on them, but if we don’t turn it over, we definitely have a shot.

The 4A State Championship Game between Booker T. Washington and Bolles will kick off Saturday night from the Citrus Bowl in Orlando at 7:07 PM.

Trinity Christian vs. American Heritage – 3A State Championship preview

football_orlando finalsBy Marty Pallman

The two teams meeting in the 3A State Championship Game at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando Saturday afternoon have owned this class the last five years.

It’s the third meeting in a state championship game in the last six seasons for Delray Beach American Heritage (11-1) and defending 3A state champion Jacksonville Trinity Christian (10-2).

American Heritage defeated Trinity Christian 30-20 for the 1A title in 2009. Trinity Christian won the rematch the following year 27-10. American Heritage followed with a 3A championship in 2011, while Trinity Christian captured the 3A title a year ago.

One thing that has changed since American Heritage’s last state championship in 2011 is the Stallions coach. Doug Socha left after the 2011 title and Stacy Sizemore took over. After a second round exit in 2012, American Heritage missed the playoffs completely in 2013. Sizemore says that disappointment caused his team to work harder.

“Not making the playoffs isn’t acceptable at American Heritage,” Sizemore said. “Our team went back and started working out harder in the offseason and they’ve had a chip on their shoulder all year to get to the playoffs and make it back to Orlando.”american-heritage_stallions

As said earlier, this is the third meeting between American Heritage and Trinity Christian in a state championship game since 2009. Trinity won the last time out in 2010, and while none of those players still play for American Heritage, Sizemore is definitely reminding his players about the history.

“I have been telling our guys about the last time we played Trinity Christian,” Sizemore said. “While none of those players were here back in 2010, they are well aware of the history.”

American Heritage’s only loss was the opening game 14-7 at 8A Miramar. Offensively, the Stallions are led by dual-threat quarterback Warren Robinson, who rushed for 1,014 yards and 18 touchdowns and passed for 914 yards and another 11 TD’s with only one interception.

Unfortunately, Robinson was injured in the 23-7 regional final win over Westminster Christian and didn’t play in the 63-13 romp over Clearwater Central Catholic in last week’s state semifinal. Sizemore hopes to have Robinson back for the state championship game.

“We actually were down to our third string quarterback against Westminster,” Sizemore said. “Trenard Davis was healthy enough to play against Clearwater Central Catholic, and we hope Warren (Robinson) can return this week.”

Davis has split time at quarterback with Robinson, throwing for 659 yards with 7 TD’s and just 2 interceptions. Devin Singletary is the Stallions leading rusher with 1,358 yards and 15 scores, averaging 10.7 yards a carry. Defensively Michael Hall leads American Heritage with 80 tackles, including 23 for loss. Josh Ward leads the Stallions with 23 sacks.

Trinity ChristianIt’s been a strange season for Trinity Christian.

The Conquerors opened the season with a 17-0 loss at nationally ranked Buford (GA) on national TV, then had the next two weeks off as one game was cancelled due to weather. Then another team, Champagnat Catholic, pulled out of a Sept. 12 game, but University Christian stepped in to play instead. The Conquerors then lost 28-7 at IMG Academy on Oct. 16, but have won their last six games, all by double digits.

Verlon Dorminey is in his 24th season and looking for his fifth state title as Trinity Christian head coach. He knows American Heritage will be tough test for his team.

“We are definitely happy and proud to be back trying to defend our state title,” Dorminey said. “We aren’t happy about the opponent, but we are happy to be back playing in the Citrus Bowl on Saturday.”

Trinity Christian is all about defense. The Conquerors have allowed 157 points all season, including only 70 points in the current six game winning streak. Trinity allowed just 1.7 yards per carry, and the entire defense is receiving D-1 offers. Dorminey says the opening week loss to Buford really refocused the team.

“Defensively we felt pretty good about where we are, but our offense really struggled in that game,” Dorminey said. “It was a great opportunity playing on national TV on a late night start, and while we didn’t play we we really re-focused our efforts after that game.”

Linebacker Victor Alexander, a UCLA commitment, leads the Conquerors with 66 tackles, including 15 for loss. Another linebacker, Jeff Holland is Trinity’s leader in sacks with 10.5, and another linebacker, Andre Smith, is committed to UNC. The secondary features Deontai Williams, a Georgia commitment, and Kevin Toliver II, a commit to LSU. Dorminey says while this is a talented Trinity Christian defense, it’s also very talented.

“We have 12 seniors who have Division 1 offers,” Dorminey said. “But one thing that has impressed me is how close this group is and how much they all like each other.”

After some early struggles, Billy Cobb has stepped in at quarterback and passed for 21 touchdowns and only three interceptions. Chris Barr leads the receiving corps with 43 catches for 619 yards and 6 TD’s. It’s mostly running back by commitee for the Conquerors, led by Rasheed Martin with 778 yards and 8 touchdowns. Michael Clark chips in with 585 yards and 10 scores.

On Saturday, Trinity Christian will meet American Heritage in the 3A State Championship Game from the Citrus Bowl in Orlando with kickoff set for 1:07 p.m.

Prep Zone Power Poll – 2014-15 Boys Basketball Poll #1 (PRESEASON)

PZ - wide(none)Gainesville – Not much has changed in the basketball Prep Zone Power Poll since the end of the 2013-14 season.

Six of the top 10 teams in last year’s final poll are ranked in the top 10 to begin the season, including the top two teams. Additionally, only four teams that were ranked in the final poll last March were left out of the preseason poll’s top 20 (Nature Coast, Santa Fe, The Villages & Hawthorne).

Despite the losses of Grayson Allen (Duke) and Christian Terrell (Florida Gulf Coast), the Stallions of Providence (Jacksonville) begin the season where they left off – on top of the rankings. They ended last season with a loss to unbeaten and eventual state champion Sagemont (Weston) in the 3A state semifinals.

There is plenty of depth in the front court for the Stallions (26-5 last year) to make another run in Class 3A. Providence, last year’s top-ranked team from wire-to-wire, collected five of the seven first-place votes and edged 6A Lake Minneola, 138-135, in total voting points.

The Hawks (28-4) received the other two first-place votes. They were state runners-up last year, falling to Miami Norland in the title game. They will be led by seniors Avery and Anthony Brown and have enough in the arsenal to make another run to Lakeland.

Ed White (Jacksonville), a 6A state semifinalist, much like Ribault (Jacksonville), which finished #3 last year but begins the rankings at No. 18, lost several players from last year. The Commanders, who won 25 games (25-5) but were forced to forfeit 14 games due to an ineligible player, are off to a 6-0 start, including a win over #4 Bishop Kenny (Jacksonville), and are ranked third. The Crusaders (21-9), a 5A regional finalist, are 5-1 this season.

They are tied with Gainesville at No. 4. The Purple Hurricanes (21-8) have nine players back, including leading scorer Ike Smith, from last year’s team that lost to Pensacola in the second round of the 6A state playoffs. Their up-and-down style is allowing them to score 81 points per game through a 4-0 stretch to begin the season.

Rival Eastside (Gainesville), who split with GHS last season, is ranked sixth. The Rams (24-7) advanced to the 5A state semifinals last year for the first time since 2006 when they won the state title.

Jackson (Jacksonville), which is in a tough district that includes Ribault and Raines, is ranked seventh. The Tigers have already beaten 8A Sandalwood (Jacksonville), ranked ninth in the poll, Ribault and Eastside en route to a 6-1 start.

Bolles (Jacksonville) is ranked eighth. Last year, the Bulldogs were 26-0 heading into the first round of the 4A state playoffs, but Jackson upset them in the regional quarterfinals. However, the return of big man Collin Smith (6’10), who averaged 15 ppg last season, and Austin Williams (6’7), the Bulldogs could be a sleeper in the 4A state playoffs.

Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne signee Charles Ruise leads Baker County (Glen St. Mary), which rounds out the top 10. Ruise averaged 20.8 points, six rebounds and three assists per game last year for the 5A regional semifinalist Wildcats (23-5).

The Prep Zone Power Poll ranks the top 20 high school football, basketball, baseball & softball teams (regardless of FHSAA classification) across 26 counties in North Florida (Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Citrus, Clay, Columbia, Dixie, Duval, Flagler, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Hernando, Jefferson, Lafayette, Lake, Levy, Madison, Marion, Nassau, Putnam, Sumter, St. Johns, Suwannee, Taylor, Union & Volusia counties). It is voted on weekly by sportswriters and sportscasters.

Victory Christian vs. Indian Rocks Christian – 2A State Championship preview

football_orlando finalsBy Marty Pallman

The FHSAA championship game for 2A is a showdown of two teams looking for their first football state title. Β Top-rankedΒ Indian Rocks Christian (Largo) and No. 2 Victory Christian (Lakeland) will meet Friday afternoon in a 1-2 showdown at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando.

For Victory Christian, they came up just a bit short in last year’s 2A state title game, losing 14-7 to Champagnat Catholic (Hialeah). The Storm have been #2 in the state AP poll most of the season, trailing only Indian Rocks Christian.

Victory Christian coach Tommy Lewis, who is in his 12th season at the school, knows last year’s experience of making it to a state title game can only help this year.

“It has to be important, already making it to this point last year,” Lewis said. “The biggest thing is the experience, and having kids who have been through it and know what’s at stake and also what to expect.”

Victory Christian (11-1)advanced to Orlando with three home wins, hanging on to beat South Daytona Warner Christian, 41-34, in the regional final before rolling past Tallahassee North Florida Christian, 44-27, in last week’s state semifinal. Lewis says the Storm are coming in the state championship game healthy at all of the key positions.victory_christian_academy_storm

“Like every team in the country, we have had to deal with injuries,” Lewis added. “But coming into this state title game we are about as healthy as we can be.”

Victory Christian features an extremely balanced offense.

Senior quarterback Caleb Lewis has completed 136 of 248 passes for 2,229 yards and 26 TD’s with only 7 INT’s. The ground game is led by three senior running backs, E’Andre Smith, Cecil Cherry, and Jaylyn McKinney, who all have over 545 yards rushing and have combined for 22 touchdowns.

Caleb Lewis is the son of coach Tommy Lewis. Coach Lewis knows it’s going to be tough coaching his son for the final time.

“I know, as my son, he doesn’t always get the credit he probably deserves,” Lewis says. “I’m not sure what I’m going to do next year when he (Caleb) isn’t here anymore. I’m really going to have to coach hard then.”

The Storm’s defense is led by Cherry with 150 total tackles and McKinney with 15 tackles for a loss and seven sacks.

This is the first state championship game appearance for Indian Rocks Christian (12-0). Mark Buchanan has been the Golden Eagles coach since 2005. He led Indian Rocks to the state semifinal last year, losing to eventual state champion Champagnat, 28-14.

Buchanan thinks last year’s playoff run led to even more success in 2014.

“We (Indian Rocks) really started to bring things together last year, when we won two playoff games,” Buchanan said. “We were very close to winning that Champagnat game as well. I think this year’s team took confidence from winning those playoff games in 2013.”

Indian Rocks ChristianIndian Rocks Christian definitely prefers to run the ball on offense.

Senior running back Jacquan Fuller has rushed for 1,148 yards rushing, a 14 yards per carry offense and 18 touchdowns, while senior Zeke McGaughy has added 1,084 yards on the ground and another 18 TD’s.

Junior quarterback Garrett Ross-Johnson has attempted only 68 passes, completing 35 with 9 TD’s and 4 interceptions.Β Buchanan says while Indian Rocks does like to run the ball, the Golden Eagles can throw if need be.

“We have three, four good backs who can explode at any moment, so we try to get them all on the field at once to spread it out,” Buchanan said. “We do have a quarterback who can sling it, but we haven’t had to use him much because we know where our strength is.”

Indian Rocks has dominated opponents, with 10 running clocks in 12 games. One exception was last week’s 40-19 state semifinal win at Glades Day (Belle Glade). Buchanan says that proved even more to him about this Golden Eagles team.

“That game (at Glades Day) was still up for grabs with about four or five minutes left,” Buchanan said. “I was very proud of how we handled that game at the end and it proved we can still do what normally works for us at the end games.”

Defensively, senior Chris Licea leads the Golden Eagles with 90 tackles, including 11 for loss. Another senior, Fisher Jones, leads Indian Rocks Christian with 18.5 sacks.

A first-time state champion will be crowned on Friday afternoon at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando as Victory Christian and Indian Rocks Christian kick off for the 2A state title at 1:07 PM.
