The Trophy Shop Athlete of the Week – Demari Turner (St. Francis Catholic Academy)

The Trophy ShopThe Trophy Shop Athlete of the Week for the week of September 25 is DEMARI TURNER* of the St. Francis Catholic Academy (Gainesville) football team.

St. Francis Catholic Academy

*Turner came up with the big plays, catching four passes for 168 yards and two touchdowns, to help lead the Wolves to a 36-0 win against rival Oak Hall and snap the Eagles’ two-game win streak in the series. The senior wide receiver had scoring catches of 63 and 89 yards as St. Francis Catholic knocked off the previously-unbeaten Eagles and snapped their overall winning streak at 13 games. He also had a 2-point conversion and helped the defense pitch its first shutout of the season.

Previous 2017-18 winners:

Sept. 18 – Anthony Richardson (Eastside football)
The sophomore quarterback led the Rams to a 2-0 week, which is twice as many wins as Eastside had (1) all season in 2016. Richardson had 646 yards and 10 touchdowns rushing and passing. In the Rams’ 33-28 home win over Newberry on Monday, he accounted for all five of their touchdowns, finishing with 348 yards and two scores through the air and 65 yards and three scores on the ground. On Friday, at Lake Weir (Ocala), Richardson ran for 102 yards on 11 carries with two TDs, and 131 yards passing with three scores.

Sept. 11 – No award due to Hurricane Irma

Sept. 4 – Gerard Williams III (Williston football)
Williams set a school record with 307 yards on 27 carries, with three touchdowns, in the Red Devils’ 28-14 win at Seven Rivers Christian (Lecanto). During Williston’s first five possessions, the senior had 13 carries for 115 yards. However, on Williston’s final three drives, he had 192 yards on 14 carries, with 2 TDs.

ThePrepZone.com Sports Report Presented by SunState Federal Credit Union (Oct. 4)

Mike RidaughtIn case you missed it on Wednesday afternoon, Mike Ridaught joined Zach Alboverdi on “The Tailgate” on WRUF-98.1 FM & 850 AM. Here are the things they discussed on ThePrepZone.com Sports Report Presented by SunState Federal Credit Union:

  • There are three big games this week.  Buchholz at Gainesville is a city showdown from Citizen’s Field and possibly for the mythical city title, and even though it’s not a district game it could have playoff implications.

Every game has meaning this year because of the new FHSAA playoff format. Zach, it might be hard to believe, when you think about it, but because of Hurricane Irma this will be the home opener for Gainesville High School. Their home game against Lake Weir (Ocala) in mid-September was rescheduled for Monday, Oct. 30, so we’re done yet with Monday night football and because of the Gators’ Homecoming, GHS and Buchholz, like last year, will play on a Thursday night. Last year, Gainesville ended up winning on a blocked extra point in double-overtime, 31-30, but it was actually Buchholz that went on to make the state playoffs. Gainesville missed the postseason for the first time since 2008.

Both teams are coming off big wins. Buchholz won at home last Thursday against Belleview 20-13 when it appeared Belleview was going in for a potential game-tying score with just seconds to go but Trent Whittemore made a great play near the goal line to knock the ball lose and Buchholz recovered and won the game.

I think one of the main positions to watch tomorrow night will be the quarterback spot. Buchholz’s starting QB Cam Orth is out with an injury. Trent Whittemore has done an admirable job but there’s just things that Cam does better in this spread offense, like timing throws, so the key for Buchholz will be to put Trent in situations that are more suited for him.

On the other side, Luke Matthews, the son of former Gator QB Shane Matthews, he’s coming along. He had a big night last week with 356 yards passing and three TDs. He started off their win last week at Forest (Ocala) with a 70-yard TD pass in the first quarter to Jalen Kelsey. Kelsey finished with 16 catches for 257 yards. The two had a really big night and that offset the night for Forest’s Connor Davis, the son of former Gator kicker Judd Davis. Connor had four field goals in the game – 49, 48, 43 and 30 yards, but his 47-yarder with :32 to play, which had the distance, but sailed just left as Gainesville spoiled Forest’s Homecoming, 20-19.

This will be the 46th meeting all-time between these two city rivals and lately the games have been really good. I mentioned last year’s game was decided in double overtime. Two years ago, Buchholz beat GHS 32-28. Three years ago, Buchholz won 23-20. So the ‘Canes got a little revenge last year and have a chance to win two in a row in the series. Class 6A Gainesville lost its season opener against Lake City Columbia and has won three in a row since. Buchholz (7A) will be coming in with some confidence after snapping a 3-game losing streak to Vanguard (Ocala), Columbia and Fleming Island (Orange Park). It should be a great game, a packed house at Citizen’s Field. We’ll have ‘live’ video of the game at ThePrepZone.com.Sunstate Logo

  • Newberry at Trenton – this was a one-point game last year; both teams made it to the postseason last season. Who wins this one?

Both these teams were in Class 1A last year. The Tigers ended up losing to eventual state champion Pahokee on the road in the 1A regional finals. Newberry lost at Pahokee in the first round of the 1A playoffs in overtime. Now both teams are playing up. Newberry based on the enrollment numbers has moved up to 3A, but Trenton, because of an FHSAA infraction was moved up to 4A as punishment. The FHSAA just released its first playoff points system averages for teams in all eight classifications, and if the season ended today, Trenton would be in as that 4th team in 4A-Region 2 behind Dunnellon, Bradford and Keystone Heights based on points average. The top four teams in each region for Classes 1A-4A will make the playoffs.

Trenton’s coming off a game against Bronson in which it scored 74 points and rushed for 370 yards. Six different players had TD’s. They jumped out to a 28-0 lead in that one so I would think that might be one of the keys is a fast start since they are at home.

Newberry is coming in off a home loss to Union County. It was an emotional game as one of their players went down with an apparent broken leg which delayed the game in the second quarter for close to 30 minutes after a scoreless first quarter. Linebacker Zach Anderson suffered the injury while making a tackle near midfield. I certainly hope that young man will be OK and it was great to see the sportsmanship by the entire Union County team to come over to him and wish him well. Newberry is just 2-3 entering this game, but their losses have been to 1A No. 1 Madison County, ranked 3rd in The Prep Zone Power Poll, an improved Eastside team, which is in 5A, and then the game last week against Union County, which is now ranked 5th in the state in 1A.

Trenton won a close game last year, 19-18, and I think it will be close for a while but I like Trenton in this game at home.

  • Hawthorne at Union County – Former Gator and Hawthorne coach Cornelius Ingram takes his unbeaten Hornets to Lake Butler to face the once-beaten Tigers in a potential playoff match-up this season in 1A

Not only C.I., but also former Gator WR Willie Jackson, who is the offensive coordinator at Hawthorne. His son, Kahleil Jackson, is the starting quarterback. He’s got almost 800 yards in four games passing and rushing. Two-sport star Devin Lawrence, who also plays basketball, is averaging 11.3 yards per carry with 10 TD’s in only four games. Right now, both these teams are in the playoffs. Hawthorne is 4-0, but I believe this will be their biggest test to date, which is interesting because they’ve played and beaten three Class 4A teams in Interlachen, Keystone Heights and P.K. Yonge. Union County just moved to No. 5 in the state in the Class 1A rankings. They have really good back in Charles Strong, who is an FSU commit. Newberry keyed on him all night, but Strong still finished with 103 yards on 29 carries and a TD. In a win against Baldwin a couple of weeks ago, Strong had 298 yards rushing on 29 carries. Coach Ronny Pruitt said they lean on him, especially in the third and fourth quarters.

Joe Pinkos, who picks the point spread for every game in the state, has Union County as a 12-point favorite, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Hawthorne, with their athletes at the skill position, came away a winner. On the other hand, with Strong running the football, he can keep the Hornet offense on the sidelines. I think that will certainly be an area to watch. Union County does have one loss, but that was to 1A No. 4 Dixie County, which is a surprising 6-0 under their first-year coach Eric Richeson.

The Prep Zone Power Poll fueled by Divine Power Wear – 2017 Football Poll #7

divine power wearRobert E. Lee (Jacksonville) is new unanimous #1 team in regional football rankings after previous No. 1 Trinity Christian (Jacksonville) stumbles on the road

GAINESVILLE — For the first time since the 2nd week of The Prep Zone Power Poll, there is a new top-ranked football team.

Trinity Christian (Jacksonville) was the #1 team in the preseason rankings, but the Conquerors fell to 2nd behind Mainland (Daytona Beach) after losing to defending 4A state champion Cocoa in the opening week of play.

Trinity Christian, four-time defending 3A state champs, had won four in a row and was the top team in the last four polls. But after a 24-14 loss at #14 Columbia (Lake City) last week, the Conquerors (4-2) fall out of the top five to #6 in this week’s regional rankings.

The new unanimous top-ranked team is Robert E. Lee (Jacksonville).Lee Generals

The Generals (5-0) rolled to a 36-0 District 2-7A win at Atlantic Coast (Jacksonville) and receive all seven first-place votes in this week’s poll. Robert E. Lee, which is ranked 5th in the Associated Press Class 7A state rankings, already owns wins over #6 Raines (Jacksonville) and Columbia in 2017.

Moving up to 2nd this week is Vanguard (Ocala).

The Knights (5-0) pitched their fourth shutout in five games with a 47-0 romp over District 5-6A rival Leesburg.

Madison County (6-0) also moves up to a spot to third after a come-from-behind 24-21 win at #11 Dunnellon. The Tigers (4-1) actually moved up a spot this week despite the loss.

Coming in 4th is St. Augustine. The Yellow Jackets (4-0) followed up their exciting come-from-behind win over #7 Bartram Trail (St. Johns) the week before with an easy 52-0 District 4-6A win at Englewood (Jacksonville).

Rounding out the top five is Raines (Jacksonville). The Vikings (4-1) obliterated an overmatched Andrew Jackson (Jacksonville) team 78-0 last Friday, and moved up one spot this week as well and into the top five.

Following Trinity Christian at #6 is Bartram Trail. The Bears (3-2) rebounded from the heartbreaking loss to rival St. Augustine by blasting District 3-7A rival Creekside (St. Johns), 49-0.

Remaining undefeated and moving up one slot to 8th this week is Fleming Island (Orange Park). The Golden Eagles improved to 6-0 with a come-from-behind 13-7 win in a defensive slugfest at Clay County rival Oakleaf (Orange Park).

Defending 2A state champion University Christian (Jacksonville) was off last week and the Christians (5-0) drop one spot to 9th in the latest poll.

Rounding out the top 10 for the second straight week is Bolles (Jacksonville). The Bulldogs pulled away in the second half for a dominating 64-13 win over Westside (Jacksonville) in District 4-5A action.

Despite the win over top-ranked Trinity Christian that ended a two-game losing streak, Columbia remains 14th this week.

Moving into the poll this week is Union County (Lake Butler) and Ridgeview (Orange Park), which are both tied for 19th. Both teams are 5-1 after Union County won 28-15 at 3A Newberry and Ridgeview edged rival Orange Park, 21-14, in a District 3-5A contest.

Bishop Kenny (Jacksonville) drops out from last week after a 38-22 loss at #16 Ponte Vedra. Also falling out is Nature Coast (Brooksville), who also lost on the road, 34-20, at Lake Wales.

The Prep Zone Power Poll ranks the top 20 high school football, basketball, baseball & softball teams (regardless of FHSAA classification) across 26 counties in North Central Florida (Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Citrus, Clay, Columbia, Dixie, Duval, Flagler, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Hernando, Jefferson, Lafayette, Lake, Levy, Madison, Marion, Nassau, Putnam, Sumter, St. Johns, Suwannee, Taylor, Union & Volusia counties). It is voted on weekly by sportswriters and sportscasters. It is fueled by Divine Power Wear.

Radio Recap – Gainesville at Ocala Forest (Week #6)

Florida Sports TalkFriday, Sept. 29
Gainesville entered the game against the Wildcats with back-to-back shutouts following a season-opening loss at Columbia (Lake City).  Forest was coming off its first loss of the season, a key district game at Leesburg.

While GHS struggled offensively in a 19-0 win at North Marion (Citra) the previous Friday, Sept. 22, the Hurricanes (3-1) struck quickly on the road at Forest.

The ‘Canes (3-1) scored on a 70-yard TD pass from junior quarterback Luke Matthews to junior wide receiver Jalen Kelsey with 8:23 to play in the first quarter for a 7-0 lead.

But in a see-saw Class 6A-District 5 game on Homecoming, the Wildcats would always seem to answer.

Senior Connor Davis, the son of former Gator kicker Judd Davis, kicked a 49-yard field goal with 4:04 to play in the opening quarter to pull the Wildcats within four at 7-3. They added to the lead on a 30-yard scoring run by senior Ekembe Cummings with 8:28 to play in the second to give Forest a 10-7 lead at the half.

Following a 48-yard FG by Davis, Matthews, the son of former Gator Shane Matthews, threw a 28-yard touchdown pass to senior Taurean Hill with 6:36 to play in the third to give the Purple Hurricanes the lead again at 14-13.

However, Davis hit number three for the game from 43 yards out with 3:00 to play in the third quarter and Forest reclaimed the lead, 16-14.

But Matthews hooked up with Kelsey again from 40 yards out with just under 10 minutes to play in the game. The 2-point conversion pass attempt was no good but GHS had a 20-16 lead.

Davis kicked a 30-yard field goal with 4:22 to play but his potential game-winning kick from 47 yards out with :32 to play sailed to the left and the visiting Hurricanes held on for a 20-19 win.

Here are some of the key stats from the game:

• GHS QB Luke Matthews threw for 356 yards and three TDs
• GHS WR Jalen Kelsey caught 16 passes for 257 yards and two TDs
• Forest K Connor Davis went 4-for-5 with field goals of 49, 48, 43 and 30 yards

It was a tough loss for Forest, which dropped to 0-2 in league play and still has unbeaten Vanguard in late October. For the ‘Canes, it sets up a battle for first-place in the district on Friday, October 13, when GHS hosts Vanguard.

NEXT RADIO BROADCAST: Newberry at Trenton
WHEN: Friday, October 6, at 7:30 p.m. (Pregame coverage at 7 p.m.)
WHERE: 92.1 FM & 1230 AM in Gainesville and 100.1 FM & 900 AM in Ocala

Both teams were in Class 1A last season but Newberry jumped up to 3A this year, while Trenton was moved up to 4A because of FHSAA infractions. Despite the move, both teams have legitimate chances to make the postseason in the FHSAA’s new playoff format.

Newberry is coming off a 28-15 loss against Union County. The Panthers (2-3) are still in position to earn one of the four playoff spots in 3A-Region 1. However, another loss leaves them little margin for error.

Trenton (3-1) ran all over Bronson in a 74-8 win. The Tigers (3-1), who finished with 370 yards rushing, are trying to keep pace with Dunnellon and Bradford (Starke), who are tied for first with 4-1 records in 4A-Region 2.
