The Trophy Shop Athlete of the Week for the week of September 9 is DEIONTAE SIMPKINS* of the Lake Weir (Ocala) football team.

*Simpkins completed 10-of-14 passes for 228 yards and three touchdowns as the Hurricanes blew past Belleview, 48-0, in the annual War for the Oar to win their first game of the season. The senior quarterback led his team to a TD on its opening drive thanks to three straight quarterback runs, finishing the night with 127 yards rushing and a score on only 12 carries.

Previous 2019-20 winners:

September 2 – No award (Hurricane Dorian)

August 26 – Trevor Holtzendorf (Union County football)
The sophomore played a big role in Union County’s come-from-behind 15-12 win at Williston. Holtzendorf recorded 14 tackles, two sacks, and one forced fumble. Union County (2-0) didn’t allow a score in the second half.

August 19 – Quan Smith (Buchholz football)
Smith helped lead the Bobcats to a 21-20 win against Eastside by rushing for 190 yards. The junior had 108 yards in the first half. However, it was his late fourth quarter 46-yard run, right after Eastside’s TD but blocked extra point, that helped seal the win. Smith had a 44-yard TD run in the first half and had Buchholz’s only score of the second half on a 40-yard pass from quarterback Jack Hevesy.

Sonic Drive-In Player-of-the-Game for Sept. 20 – Quintin Gross (North Marion)

The Sonic Drive-In Player-of-the-Game for Friday, September 20, was Quintin Gross of the North Marion (Citra) football team.

The junior quarterback threw four TD passes as the Colts defeated visiting Gainesville, 41-6, to stay unbeaten.  North Marion (4-0) also snapped a 3-game losing streak to the Hurricanes (0-4).

His first completion for a score was an inside pitch to Brendan Shipp, who finished with three touchdowns.  The 9-yard scoring play gave the Colts a 7-0 lead with 2:21 to play in the opening quarter, and his 2nd TD pass, a 16-yarder to Shipp with 5:05 to play in the 2nd quarter gave North Marion a 14-0 lead and ensured they would never trail in the game.

Gross added a 59-yard TD pass to Zac Offord late in the second quarter, and following a GHS turnover, threw an 18-yard TD pass to Shipp with just 4.6 seconds left in the half for a 27-0 lead at the break.

Every game The Prep Zone will recognize a Player-of-the-Game. The recipient receives a $10 gift certificate courtesy of Sonic Drive-In of Gainesville & Ocala.

James G. Pressly Stadium, Percy Beard Track to Host 2020-22 Track & Field State Championships

GAINESVILLE, FL (9/20/19) –The Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) announced Friday that the Florida High School Track & Field State Championships will return to the University of Florida campus as part of a three-year partnership with the Gainesville Sports Commission (GSC).

“It gives me great pride to announce that the GSC will be hosting the Florida High School Track & Field State Championships on May 13th-16th, 2020 at James G. Pressly Stadium, Percy Beard Track” said Gainesville Sports Commission Executive Director, Joleen Cacciatore Miller. She went on to say, “The GSC is excited to bring back the State Championships to our community, which has not been hosted here since 2004.

Today’s announcement comes from the incredible collaboration of the FHSAA, GSC, Alachua County, University Athletic Association and University of Florida. Hosting the FHSAA Track & Field State Championships in Alachua County will allow our high school athletes to stay local and compete on this elite track. Additionally, this will create significant economic impact in our community by visiting attendees from all over the state of Florida. We look forward to welcoming the state track and field participants and spectators to Alachua County!”

In a change from the previous years where all four classifications competed simultaneously, the new schedule of events will feature a format where just two classifications for both girls and boys compete at the same time over a two-day period. The first two classifications will compete on Wednesday and Thursday, with the remaining two classes having their competition on Friday and Saturday.

“James G. Pressly Stadium, Percy Beard Track has been the historical training ground for some of the world’s best track & field athletes over the years”, FHSAA Executive Director George Tomyn said. “We would like to thank the GSC for their commitment, and we are excited to give our member schools and student athletes a memorable experience they remember for a lifetime.”

A listing of hotel options can be found here. Meet schedules, parking, and advanced ticket information for the event will be announced in the near future. Dates for the 2021 and 2022 events are yet to be determined. For more information, follow the FHSAA on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat by searching for “FHSAA.”

The Prep Zone Power Poll powered by Anytime Fitness – 2019 Volleyball Poll #5

Defending 5A state champion Trinity Catholic (Ocala) back on top of the regional all-classification rankings

GAINESVILLE – There’s a familiar volleyball team on top of The Prep Zone Power Poll.

Defending 5A state champion Trinity Catholic (Ocala), which started out on top of the preseason regional all-classification volleyball rankings, has moved back to No. 1. The Class 3A Celtics (6-1), who were ranked second last week, defeated previous No. 1 Buchholz (Gainesville) in a 5-set thriller.

Buchholz had won the first meeting in five sets in late August in Ocala, but Trinity Catholic got revenge on the road. It completed a 4-0 week since the last poll, which included a 3-1 win against defending 7A state champion Vanguard (Ocala).

Trinity Catholic received all six first-place votes, while the Class 6A Bobcats (8-2), who also lost at Forest (Ocala), 3-2, dropped one spot to second.

Several teams played as many as eight or nine games in less than 10 days.

That includes previous No. 3 Ponte Vedra, which went 6-2 since Sept. 10.

The Class 5A Sharks (10-2) are tied for third with Santa Fe (Alachua). Their only losses during that stretch were to 6A #5 Venice and nationally-ranked Lake Highland Prep (Orlando) at the Battle at the Beach Invitational at Venice.

Meanwhile, the Class 4A Raiders (9-1), defending 6A state runners-up, moved up four spots from seventh to third following a 3-0 record that included a 3-1 win against Vanguard.

Santa Fe has won nine in a row since a season-opening loss at Buchholz. Those two teams will play again in Alachua on Tuesday.

Forest (Ocala) rounds out the top five.

The Class 6A Wildcats (9-2) moved up six spots from No. 11 following wins at #5 Vanguard (Ocala), 3-0, vs. #1 Buchholz, 3-2, and versus previously RV North Marion (Citra), 3-0.

Class 6A Fleming Island (Orange Park) (6-2) is ranked sixth, while 1A Bell (11-0), 7A East Ridge (Clermont) (11-3), and 6A New Smyrna Beach (9-3) and 7A Spruce Creek (Port Orange) (8-4), who are tied for ninth, round out the top 10.

Christ’s Church Academy (Jacksonville) soars into the top 20 at No. 18. The Class 2A Eagles (11-2) went 8-0, including a win at 7A Sandalwood (Jacksonville), and a 5-0 mark at the River City Tournament in Jacksonville.

Class 1A Branford (12-1) and Class 3A Trinity Christian (Jacksonville) (7-3) also move into the rankings at Nos. 19 & 20, respectively.

The Prep Zone Power Poll ranks the top 20 high school football, basketball, baseball & softball teams (regardless of FHSAA classification) across 26 counties in North Florida (Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Citrus, Clay, Columbia, Dixie, Duval, Flagler, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Hernando, Jefferson, Lafayette, Lake, Levy, Madison, Marion, Nassau, Putnam, Sumter, St. Johns, Suwannee, Taylor, Union & Volusia counties). The Prep Zone Power Poll powered by Anytime Fitness of Gainesville – 2019 Football Poll #5

Major shakeup in regional all-classification rankings as five of the top 10 teams lose in week 4 GAINESVILLE — The Prep Zone Power Poll has seen a pretty consistent group of teams in the top five and top 10 so far in 2019. But with all the teams back in action, Week 4 of the high school football season saw some teams at the top of the rankings suffer their first setback of the year. This was not true for Columbia (Lake City), as they remain at the top of the poll this week once again. But the Tigers had to work to get to 4-0 as they held off Pine Forest (Pensacola), 21-13. Columbia forced five turnovers to stay unbeaten and received eight of the nine first-place votes to stay at #1 heading into their bye week. Moving up to #2 and receiving the other first-place vote this week is Bartram Trail (St. Johns). The Bears (4-0) pounded defending 8A state champion then-#3 Mandarin (Jacksonville), 32-7, to stay unbeaten on the season and move up three spots from a week ago. Bartram Trail heads into its rivalry game with St. Augustine this Friday night. Mandarin drops five spots to 8th with the loss. The Mustangs’ (2-1) challenging slate continues as they host #10 Robert E. Lee (Jacksonville) on Friday. North Marion (Citra) moves up to 3rd after taking the trip to Hardee (Wauchula) and coming back with a 25-14 win. The Colts (3-0) host winless Gainesville this week. Madison County moves up two slots to #4 after defeating previously unbeaten 5A Suwannee (Live Oak), 55-28. The Cowboys (4-0) host undefeated 3A Florida High (Tallahassee) this week. Dunnellon is the big mover this week, as the Tigers moved up five spots and into the top five at #5 after holding on to win at then-#2 Vanguard (Ocala), 23-20. The Tigers improved to 4-0 with the win in the Marion County rivalry. Vanguard (2-1) drops to 6th after the home loss. Sandalwood (Jacksonville) also moves up five spots and into the top 10 at #7. The Saints (3-0) stayed unbeaten with a 44-19 win at Nease (Ponte Vedra). Oakleaf (Orange Park) is also new to the top 10, moving up six slots to 9th. The Knights (3-1) won two games last week, cruising past Ridgeview (Orange Park) and Gainesville. Oakleaf’s only loss so far is 21-10 to top-ranked Columbia. Lee rounds out the top 10. The Generals (2-1) finally played rival Raines (Jacksonville) last Saturday, with Lee coming away with a 15-7 win in a defensive slugfest. With the loss, Raines (1-2) drops out of the top 10, falling to No. 15. Also dropping out of the top 10 is Trinity Christian (Jacksonville) and DeLand. The Conquerors (1-3) dropped to 14th after a 31-17 loss to powerhouse American Heritage (Plantation), which is ranked 2nd in the Associated Press Class 5A state rankings. DeLand dropped a home game 24-13 to 8A #5 Seminole (Sanford). New to the poll this week is Fleming Island (Orange Park) at No. 17, Ponte Vedra is 18th, and Bolles (Jacksonville) re-enters the rankings at #19. Fleming Island improved to 3-0 after a 24-13 win over Fletcher (Neptune Beach), Ponte Vedra remained unbeaten at 3-0 after rallying for a 33-29 win at Palatka, and Bolles moves back into the rankings after knocking off then-#19 St. Augustine, 28-7. St. Augustine drops out this week, as well as Spruce Creek (Port Orange) and South Sumter (Bushnell). The Prep Zone Power Poll ranks the top 20 high school football, basketball, baseball & softball teams (regardless of FHSAA classification) across 26 counties in North Florida (Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Citrus, Clay, Columbia, Dixie, Duval, Flagler, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Hernando, Jefferson, Lafayette, Lake, Levy, Madison, Marion, Nassau, Putnam, Sumter, St. Johns, Suwannee, Taylor, Union & Volusia counties).
