Published:

Sonic-logoThe Sonic Drive-In Player-of-the-Game for Tuesday, April 30, was Alissa Humphrey of the Gainesville softball team.

It was another dominating performance in the circle by Gainesville junior Alissa Humphrey last night in the Class 7A-District 3 Semifinals against Ocala Vanguard.

The JU commit tossed a 1-hitter with 13 strikeouts in a 10-0 win in five innings.

She opened the game with eight consecutive strikeouts and didn’t allow her first hit of the game until there were two outs in the fifth.  She missed a perfect game on a single by YaYa Tyler, who was the only player to reach base for the Knights (3-20).

That snapped a streak of 14 straight batters retired to start the game. She ended the game the way she began it, with a strikeout.

Humphrey was also 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs driven in for GHS (18-7), which will host Middleburg in Thursday’s district championship game.Alissa Humphrey GHS POG 043019

The Broncos upset Columbia (Lake City), 6-4, in the other district semifinal to advance to the postseason for the first time in six years.  It’s also the first time that Columbia won’t be in the playoffs since 2010.

Gainesville won both meetings against the Broncos (11-11) by a total of four runs.  The ‘Canes, ranked 10th in the Class 7A state rankings, are the top seed in the district while Middleburg is the No. 3 seed.

Every game The Prep Zone will recognize a Player-of-the-Game. The recipient receives a $10 gift certificate courtesy of Sonic Drive-In of Gainesville & Ocala.
