Our Sonic Player-of-the-game for Wednesday, May 3, is Alissa Humphrey of the Gainesville softball team.
The freshman pitched a complete game to lead GHS to a 5-2 win at Bartram Trail (St. Johns) in a match-up of top 10 teams in the Class 7A-Region 1 Quarterfinals.
The Class 7A No. 4 Hurricanes (23-5) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on the road thanks to Humphrey’s lead-off double in the top of the second inning. Junior Reaghan Young’s RBI single to center field brought home courtesy runner Sidney Karas for the first run of the game.
In the circle, Humphrey kept the No. 8 Bears off balance.
She struck out four batters in the first three innings and didn’t give up her second hit of the game until the fifth inning, when Bartram Trail (23-5) scored its only runs of the game on a two out hit by clean-up hitter Olivia Creamer.
In the sixth inning, after giving up a lead-off single and sending the tying run to the on-deck circle, Humphrey proceeded to strike out the next three batters to end the threat.
For the game, Humphrey allowed just two runs on five hits in seven innings of work, walking three and striking out seven.
For the season, Humphrey (21-3), who entered with a 1.74 ERA, now has 198 Ks in 144 innings pitched and 16 complete games.
Every game The Prep Zone will recognize a Sonic Player-of-the-Game. The recipient receives a $10 gift card & certificate courtesy of Sonic of Gainesville & Ocala.
