Prep Zone Power Poll – 2015 Football Poll #3

Gainesville – There’s a new No. 1 in the Prep Zone Power Poll.

Nationally-ranked Mainland (Daytona Beach), which is ranked #1 in the Associated Press Class 6A state poll, leap frogged No. 2 Trinity Christian (Jacksonville), which is ranked No. 1 in the 3A state rankings, to the top spot. Mainland edged Trinity Christian, 215-214, in total voting points.

The Bucs (2-0) defeated #16 Bartram Trail (St. Johns), 56-24, and received six of the 11 first-place votes. The Conquerors were ‘sloppy’ according to head coach Verlon Dorminey, but they still managed to defeat Ribault (Jacksonville), 34-6, and pick up the other five first-place votes.

The rest of the top five remained the same.

Oakleaf (Orange Park), which is ranked third in the Class 7A poll, defeated Orange Park, 44-7, to remain third in the regional rankings.

Class 4A No. 2 Bolles (Jacksonville) defeated 6A #6 Heritage (Palm Bay), 28-21, and stayed at No. 4, while 5A #4 North Marion (Citra), which defeated 6A Forest (Ocala), 35-10, remained fifth.

First Coast (Jacksonville) and Clay (Green Cove Springs) were the only top 10 teams to lose on Friday as the Bucs (0-1) and Blue Devils (1-1) dropped to 11th and 14th, respectively.

Class 1A state semifinalist Dixie County (Cross City), 7A Bartram Trail (St. Johns), 6A Ed White (Jacksonville) and 1A Madison County all dropped out of the rankings following a loss.

Four new teams moved in.

Gainesville, which defeated previous No. 6 First Coast, is ranked 16th, one spot behind city rival Buchholz (Gainesville).

Class 8A Jacksonville schools Sandalwood and Mandarin are ranked 18th and 19th respectively, while Newberry (2-0) enters the poll at No. 20 following wins over 4A Santa Fe (Alachua) and 5A Eastside (Gainesville).

The Prep Zone Power Poll ranks the top 20 high school football, basketball, baseball & softball teams (regardless of FHSAA classification) across 26 counties in North Florida (Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Citrus, Clay, Columbia, Dixie, Duval, Flagler, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Hernando, Jefferson, Lafayette, Lake, Levy, Madison, Marion, Nassau, Putnam, Sumter, St. Johns, Suwannee, Taylor, Union & Volusia counties). It is voted on weekly by sportswriters and sportscasters.
