Sonic Drive-In Player-of-the-Game for Sept. 25 – Quan Smith (Buchholz)

The Sonic Drive-In Player-of-the-Game for Friday, September 25, was Quan Smith of the Buchholz (Gainesville) football team.

Smith scored four touchdowns, including the game-winner in the opening quarter, to help lead the Bobcats to a 54-0 win against Eastside.

It was the first win of the season for the Bobcats (1-1) and their 8th straight win in the series against the Rams (0-3).

The senior, who has an offer from Michigan, scored on a 14-yard touchdown run with 4:38 to play in the opening quarter.

Then, following an interception by senior D.J. Curtis, a Wofford commit, Smith punched it in from a yard out for a 14-0 lead with 2:50 to play in the first quarter.

“We really wanted to get him going,” said Buchholz coach Mark Whittemore.  “That was a big deal.  He ran well.”

Buchholz will travel to Suwannee (Live Oak) on Friday, Oct. 2, but Whittemore wasn’t ready to look ahead just yet.

“This is the first step to a city championship,” he said.  “We’re going to enjoy this one.”

Every game The Prep Zone will recognize a Player-of-the-Game. The recipient receives a $10 gift certificate courtesy of Sonic Drive-In of Gainesville & Ocala.

Sonic Drive-In Player-of-the-Game for Sept. 24 – Jamarian Samuel (Trinity Catholic)

The Sonic Drive-In Player-of-the-Game for Thursday, September 24, was Jamarian Samuel of the Trinity Catholic (Ocala) football team.

Samuel accounted for four touchdowns as the visiting Celtics defeated Gainesville, 38-7, at Citizen’s Field.

The senior had the game-winning score with 5:01 to play in the second quarter on a 1-yard scoring run. On the drive, he had a 69-yard TD run called back because of penalty, but he still added a 33-yard run on the possession.

Following an interception by Joshua Jenkins, Samuel scored on a 25-yard TD run as the Celtics, who would get a 37-yard field goal from Alvaro Cebrian as the horn sounded at the end of the second quarter, took a 24-7 lead at halftime.

Samuel added a 3-yard touchdown run with 9:00 to play in the game and then threw a 24-yard TD pass to T.J. Snowden for the final score of the night.

He finished with 145 yards on 22 carries and 188 all-purpose yards.

Trinity Catholic (2-0) will host The Villages next Friday, Oct. 2.

Madison County travels to Tallahassee to take on defending 3A state champion Florida High this Friday.

Bolles remains second after their second consecutive road win to start the season, 40-23 at #19 St. Augustine. The Bulldogs (2-0) received four first-place votes but stayed just a point shy of the top spot and remained second this week.

Bolles opens its home schedule this week against RV Creekside (St. Johns).
Remaining third is Bartram Trail (St. Johns).

The Bears (2-0) received the other first-place vote after pulling away for a 26-13 win at Mandarin (Jacksonville). Bartram Trail also plays its home opener this week against St. Johns County rival St. Augustine.
