Ponte Vedra streak continues; Sharks still No. 1 in the all-classification regional rankings

GAINESVILLE – The top-ranked team in The Prep Zone Power Poll for the third straight week is Ponte Vedra.

The Sharks (3-0), who received six of the seven first-place votes in this week’s poll, remained the top-ranked team in the all-classification rankings for the third straight week after sweeping Middleburg and Bishop Kenny (Jacksonville) last week.

They won their 12th straight match last week. The defending 5A state champions have not lost since October 2019.

Santa Fe (Alachua), which received the other first-place vote, remained second after a 5-2 week, including going 3-2 at the prestigious Berkeley Prep Tournament in Tampa over the weekend.

The Raiders (9-2), last year’s Class 4A state runner-up, had wins over Academy of Holy Names (Tampa), Trinity Catholic and Calvary Christian, while losing to Steinbrenner (Lutz) and host Berkeley Prep.

Forest (Ocala) (5-0) jumped from fourth to third after sweeping county rivals Belleview and West Port (Ocala) last week.

Trinity Catholic (Ocala) (2-3) dropped to fourth after finishing 2-3 at the Berkeley Prep Tournament with wins over Buchholz and Calvary Christian, while losing to Plant (Tampa), Santa Fe and Clearwater Central Catholic.

Vanguard (Ocala) (5-1) jumped from eighth to fifth this week after wins over county rivals Lake Weir (Ocala) and Belleview.

Bishop Kenny (4-2) remained sixth after finishing the week at 2-1 with wins over Fernandina Beach and Yulee, while getting swept by No. 1 Ponte Vedra earlier in the week.

Rounded out the top 10 is No. 7 Creekside (St. Johns) (4-0), No. 8 Fleming Island (Orange Park) (5-1), No. 9 Fletcher (Jacksonville) (5-0) and No. 10 Newberry (5-2), which moved up two spots after a 4-0 week including a huge win over previous No. 7 and current No. 11 Bell earlier in the week.

The biggest surprise was Buchholz dropping from No. 5 to No. 13 after a shocking 0-5 week, including 0-4 at the Berkeley Prep Tournament this past weekend.

New to the poll this week are Aucilla Christian (Monticello) (7-0 ranked No. 19) and St. Johns Country Day (Orange Park) (7-0), which is tied with Gainesville for 20th.

The Prep Zone Power Poll ranks the top 20 high school football, volleyball, basketball, baseball and softball teams (regardless of FHSAA Classification) across the 26 counties in North Florida (Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Citrus, Columbia, Dixie, Duval, Flagler, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Hernando, Jefferson, Lafayette, Lake, Levy, Madison, Nassau, Putnam, Sumter, St. Johns, Suwannee, Taylor, Union and Volusia counties). Sonic Drive-In Player-of-the-Game for Sept. 18 – Makai Johnson (Newberry)

The Sonic Drive-In Player-of-the-Game for Friday, September 18, was Makai Johnson of the Newberry football team.

Johnson accounted for three TDs as the Panthers built an early 15-0 lead and held on for a 28-21 win against visiting Union County (Lake Butler).

The senior quarterback scored on a fourth-and-goal run from a yard out to give Newberry a 6-0 lead with 7:00 to play in the opening quarter.

Then, after a three-and-out by Union County, Johnson completed two passes to senior Justen Crews that covered 42 yards, including a 12-yard scoring pass on third-and-goal to give the Panthers a 13-0 lead with just :20 left in the opening quarter.

“He stayed in the pocket and made some big throws,” said Newberry coach Ed Johnson. “He’s getting better. Hopefully this can be a spring board for the rest of the season.”

Johnson, who was coming off an ankle injury, found Crews again late on a 7-yard scoring pass to make it 28-15 with just 1:14 to play.

Union County, which rallied from a 15-0 halftime deficit, dropped to 1-1.

“I thought Newberry played well,” said Union County coach Andrew Thomas, whose Tigers will host Interlachen next Friday. “They made plays we hadn’t seen on film.”

Newberry (1-1) will host Pierson Taylor on Friday, Sept. 18.

Every game The Prep Zone will recognize a Player-of-the-Game. The recipient receives a $10 gift certificate courtesy of Sonic Drive-In of Gainesville & Ocala.

Madison County edges Bolles (Jacksonville) for top spot in regional rankings after 2-0 start

GAINESVILLE — Two weeks into the 2020 high school football season and almost half the teams in The Prep Zone Power Poll have yet to start their season.

Nine teams still will not play their first game until this Friday or next Friday, September 25.

But Madison County is off and running once again, as the Cowboys are 2-0 and remain the top-ranked team in this week’s all-classification regional rankings.

The 3-time defending state champions had to work for their 18-13 win over #17 South Sumter (Bushnell) last week.

This was on the heels of an impressive 47-0 blowout of Jefferson County (Monticello) in the opening week on September 4, and that is enough to give the Cowboys five of the nine first-place votes and keep them in the #1 spot.

Madison County edged #2 Bolles (Jacksonville) by three points.

Bolles opened its season with an impressive 36-12 rout at then-#9 Trinity Christian (Jacksonville) and received three first-place votes to remain second.

The Bulldogs travel to #19 St. Augustine this Friday night. St. Augustine moved into the poll this week following a 49-0 rout at Middleburg in their opener last week.

Bartram Trail stayed third after winning a wild back-and-forth opener, 50-40, at rival RV Creekside (St. Johns). The Bears are at Mandarin (Jacksonville) this week.

Two teams who have yet to start their seasons round out the top five.
Vanguard (Ocala) is fourth, while Trinity Catholic (Ocala), which opens this Friday at home against South Sumter, moves up a spot to #5.

Oakleaf (Orange Park), which received the final first-place vote, moves up five spots to lead off the second five after a 35-14 opening game win at Buchholz (Gainesville).

The competition gets a little tougher for the Knights (1-0) this Friday as they travel to Valdosta to take on Lowndes, the top-ranked team in Georgia and #9 team nationally according to MaxPreps.

Robert E. Lee (Jacksonville) drops two spaces to 7th. The Generals open their 2020 season Friday against Ribault (Jacksonville).

Eighth-ranked North Marion (Citra), Fleming Island (Orange Park), and Columbia (Lake City) round out the top 10.

North Marion and Columbia will start their seasons on September 25.
Fleming Island opened its slate with a 29-7 triumph over Palatka, and the Golden Eagles are on the road at RV Fletcher (Neptune Beach) this week.

Baker County (Glen St. Mary) is new to the poll this week at 16th after the Wildcats won their first two games by a combined score of 82-6 over Orange Park and then #19T Bradford (Starke).

Ponte Vedra also moves into the rankings at #18 after opening the season with a 24-7 win at Nease (Ponte Vedra).

Dropping out from the preseason poll are University Christian (Jacksonville), which dropped its opener 33-12 at Clay (Green Cove Springs), along with Bradford and Lafayette (Mayo).
