Jacksonville schools Trinity Christian and Bolles flip-flop in regional rankings as Conquerors move back to No. 1

GAINESVILLE — The 2021 high school football season is already four weeks in, and one thing has become certain about The Prep Zone Power Poll.

The two best teams right now are two Jacksonville powerhouses, Trinity Christian and Bolles. But the choice of which of those two teams is better at this point in the season is pretty unclear.

Trinity Christian, which was ranked No. 1 in the first two polls this season, moves back to the top spot in the all-classification regional rankings after rallying past previously undefeated Clearwater Academy International in a 53-50 overtime shootout.

The win for the Conquerors (4-0) was the 300th in the career of Coach Verlon Dorminey, who has also won eight state titles at the school on Jacksonville’s Westside.

Trinity Christian, which is ranked No. 1 in Class 2A, picks up four of the seven first-place votes and moves back to the top spot. But the Conquerors face another tough matchup on the road this week at No. 8 Columbia (Lake City).

Bolles, which is ranked No. 3 in Class 4A, drops a spot to 2nd despite an easy 49-14 road win at Fernandina Beach.

The Bulldogs (4-0), who received the other three first-place votes but are two points behind Trinity Christian overall, host No. 13 University Christian (Jacksonville) tonight.

The debate over who is better between Trinity Christian and Bolles should be decided when the two teams meet at Skinner-Barco Stadium next Friday, October 1.

Buchholz (Gainesville), which is off this week, remains 3rd.

The Bobcats (3-1) stayed put after a tough 16-7 loss to the No. 1 team in Class 4A, Cardinal Gibbons (Fort Lauderdale), which is also the defending state champion in 4A.

Riverside (Jacksonville), which is ranked 3rd in Class 6A, moves up a spot to 4th.

The Generals (4-0) stayed unbeaten with a 41-9 romp at Orange Park and hosts Andrew Jackson (Jacksonville) tonight.

Vanguard (Ocala) drops a slot to No. 5 as their game against Carol City (Miami) was cancelled due to COVID-19. The Class 6A Knights (3-0) return to action this week at county rival North Marion (Citra).

Bartram Trail (St. Johns) leads off the second five at No. 6.

The Bears (3-1) rebounded from a tough loss the previous week to Lincoln (Tallahassee) by winning their District 1-8A opener, 23-8, at Mandarin (Jacksonville).

Bartram Trail faces another big test this week as they travel to No. 7 St. Augustine in the annual St. Johns County rivalry game.

St. Augustine (2-1) moves up a spot to 7th after a 54-37 win in a slugfest at Middleburg in their District 4-6A opener.

Following No. 8 Columbia is unbeaten Spruce Creek (Port Orange) at No. 9.

The Hawks (4-0) move up four spots and into the top 10 after a 48-0 romp at Lake Howell (Winter Park) in their District 4-7A opener. Spruce Creek faces a big road test this week at 19th-ranked Flagler Palm Coast.

Creekside (St. Johns) rounds out the top 10. The Knights improved to 4-0 with a 20-16 District 1-8A win at Sandalwood (Jacksonville) and make a big move up five spots.

Among the second 10, Ed White (Jacksonville) makes the biggest move of the week. The Commanders (2-0) move up six spots after a 40-24 win over then-No. 19 Suwannee (Live Oak), who drops out of the poll.

Mainland (Daytona Beach) moves back in after crushing then-No. 7 Lake Minneola (Minneola) 35-6. The Bucs (1-2) move into a tie for 17th with Lake Minneola (2-2).

The Prep Zone Power Poll ranks the top 20 high school football, girls basketball, boys basketball, softball & baseball teams (regardless of FHSAA classification) across 26 counties in North Florida (Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Citrus, Clay, Columbia, Dixie, Duval, Flagler, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Hernando, Jefferson, Lafayette, Lake, Levy, Madison, Marion, Nassau, Putnam, Sumter, St. Johns, Suwannee, Taylor, Union & Volusia counties). It is voted on weekly by sportswriters and sportscasters and it is powered by Anytime Fitness of Gainesville.

Nationally ranked and two-time defending state champion Ponte Vedra a unanimous No. 1

GAINESVILLE — The more things change, the more they stay the same for high school volleyball teams in The Prep Zone Power Poll.

The thing staying the same is the dominance of the Ponte Vedra Sharks (11-0), who are ranked No. 1 in the state of Florida and No. 4 nationally by Max Preps.

The Sharks, who have won two straight state titles and three of the last four, have won 47 matches in a row dating back to October of 2019.

Not surprisingly, Ponte Vedra is the unanimous top-ranked team, receiving all five first-place votes after starting with wins over No. 3 Santa Fe (Alachua), No. 10 Bartram Trail (St. Johns) and #No. 16T Episcopal (Jacksonville). They have also beaten state ranked teams Steinbrenner (Lutz), Plant (Tampa) and Florida High (Tallahassee).

Coming in 2nd is defending 3A state champion Trinity Catholic (Ocala).

The Celtics, who captured their second state title in three years in 2020, have started this season 7-3 with wins over Cardinal Mooney (Sarasota), Hoover (AL), and RV Vanguard (Ocala), which advanced to the 5A state semifinals a year ago.

Santa Fe is ranked third.

The Raiders, who advanced to the state championship game in 2018 and ‘19, were knocked out by eventual 4A state champion Bishop Kenny (Jacksonville) in the region final round last fall.

This year’s Santa Fe team is off to a 10-2 start with wins over defending 6A state champion Mater Academy (Hialeah Gardens), Vanguard and RV Ridgeview (Orange Park), with their only losses to Ponte Vedra and state-ranked Berkeley Prep (Tampa).

Speaking of Bishop Kenny, the defending state champs are 4th.
So far in 2021, the Crusaders (8-4) have wins over No. 6T Providence (Jacksonville). No. 19T Yulee, Bolles (Jacksonville) and RV Fernandina Beach. Their losses are to Spain Park and Hoover from Alabama, along with setbacks to 7A Dr. Phillips (Orlando) and powerhouse Canterbury (Fort Myers).

Forest (Ocala) rounds out the top five.

The Wildcats (7-2) were undefeated a season ago all the way to the Region 2-6A final, where they were knocked out by St. Petersburg. Forest has defeated #No.16T Gainesville twice and RV New Smyrna Beach, with their only losses to Santa Fe and Venice.

Leading off the second five are two Jacksonville teams tied for sixth in Mandarin and Providence (10-2).

The Mustangs (9-0) already own wins over Bartram Trail, Yulee, Ridgeview, and RV Fletcher (Neptune Beach).

The Stallions have beaten No. 9 Trinity Christian (Jacksonville), which is the Conquerors’ only loss, No. 14 Christ’s Church (Jacksonville), Episcopal, and Yulee, with their only losses to Bishop Kenny and No. 11 Creekside (St. Johns).

Weeki Wachee (8-3) comes in 8th, while Trinity Christian and Bartram Trail round out the top 10.

Among the second 10 is last year’s 1A state runner-up Newberry. The Panthers (7-5), who have had to basically replace their entire starting lineup from 2020, are 15th.

The Prep Zone Power Poll ranks the top 20 high school football, volleyball, girls basketball, boys basketball, baseball and softball teams (regardless of FHSAA Classification) across 26 counties in North Florida (Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Citrus, Clay, Columbia, Dixie, Duval, Flagler, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Hernando, Jefferson, Lafayette, Lake, Levy, Madison, Marion, Nassau, Putnam, Sumter, St. Johns, Suwannee, Taylor, Union and Volusia counties). The visiting Raiders won the opening game and set the tone early en route to a sweep of the host Hurricanes 25-19, 25-20, 27-25.

“For who we were playing, which is extremely big and athletic, GHS, I thought we played extremely well,” said Santa Fe coach Eric Marshall. “I thought they (GHS) played really well.”

Bolles (Jacksonville) rallies to beat St. Augustine, and once again edges Trinity Christian (Jacksonville) for top spot in regional rankings

GAINESVILLE — We have already reached the quarter point and are heading towards the halfway point of the 2021 high school football season.

The top five teams in The Prep Zone Power Poll remain almost the same as the cream continues to rise to the top.

Staying in the No. 1 spot for the second straight week are the Bolles (Jacksonville) Bulldogs, who are ranked No 3 in Class 4A.

Bolles (3-0) slipped past #8 St. Augustine 32-27 in a back-and-forth affair, scoring late to beat the Yellow Jackets (1-1). With the win, Bolles received four of the seven first-place votes so stay in the top spot and has a bit of a break this week as they travel to Fernandina Beach.

Right behind Bolles once again this week is Trinity Christian (Jacksonville).

The Conquerors (3-0) rolled past Zarephath Academy (Jacksonville), 55-8, and received the other three first-place votes. Trinity Christian, which is two points behind Bolles this week, faces a tough assignment this Friday as it hosts independent Clearwater Academy International (3-0).

Buchholz (Gainesville) remains 3rd.

The Bobcats (3-0) remained unbeaten as they pounded city rival Eastside (Gainesville), 42-7. They face a major test this week as defending 4A state champion Cardinal Gibbons (Fort Lauderdale), which is once again ranked #1 in their classification, comes to Citizen’s Field in a game that will be broadcast on 106.9 FM “I Am Country” beginning with the pregame show at 6:30 p.m. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.

Vanguard (Ocala) moves up a spot to No. 4 as they stayed unbeaten with a 13-6 defensive slugfest over then-No. 18 Dunnellon. The Knights were scheduled to host Carol City (Miami), but that game has been called off. Vanguard travels to RV North Marion (Citra) next week.

Rounding out the top five are two Jacksonville area teams tied for 5th in Bartram Trail (St. Johns) and Riverside (Jacksonville).

The Bears (2-1) suffered their first loss of the season to 6A Lincoln (Tallahassee), losing a two-touchdown lead and dropping the game, 37-31. Bartram Trail travels to rival Mandarin (Jacksonville) this Friday.

Riverside (3-0) picked up another easy road win, 34-8, at Ribault (Jacksonville). The Generals are on the road again this week at 1-2 Orange Park.

Lake Minneola moves up a slot to 7th, rebounding from a loss to RV Fleming Island (Orange Park) in week two by destroying East Ridge (Clermont), 63-0, last Friday.

Rounding out the top 10 is St. Augustine, followed by No. 9 Hawthorne and 10th-ranked Columbia (Lake City).

Hawthorne’s game at No. 19 Suwannee (Live Oak) was rescheduled for Oct. 1 due to COVID-19, while Columbia rebounded from a 34-7 home loss to Bolles the previous week by knocking off then-No. 7 Oakleaf (Orange Park), 27-23, on the road.

With the win Columbia moves up four spots back into the top 10, while Oakleaf drops four positions just out of the top 10 at No. 11.

Moving into the poll this week is #15 Creekside (St. Johns). The Knights improved to 3-0 with a 26-0 blanking of then-No. 12 Fleming Island (Orange Park). With the loss the Golden Eagles drop to 1-2 and fall out of the poll.

Ed White (Jacksonville) is also new to the poll this week at 20th, despite not having played for the last two weeks. The Commanders (1-0) replace Dunnellon, which drops out after the loss at Vanguard.

The Prep Zone Power Poll ranks the top 20 high school football, girls basketball, boys basketball, softball & baseball teams (regardless of FHSAA classification) across 26 counties in North Florida (Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Citrus, Clay, Columbia, Dixie, Duval, Flagler, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Hernando, Jefferson, Lafayette, Lake, Levy, Madison, Marion, Nassau, Putnam, Sumter, St. Johns, Suwannee, Taylor, Union & Volusia counties).
