Rams end 10-game losing streak on Senior Night

By Curtis Michaud
Twitter – @CurtisMichaud1

On Friday night at Citizens Field in Gainesville, the Eastside Rams varsity football team was able to come up with its first win of the season on Senior Night.

“They been through a lot and they deserve it,” said second year Rams’ head coach Alex Deleon.

The Rams defeated the Palatka Panthers at home, 27-8, in a non-district matchup of programs desperately needing a win as the season nears its end.

Both teams entered this game with losing streaks.

Eastside (1-7) snapped a 10-game losing skid which dates back to last season, while Palatka (1-6), which was coming off a blowout defeat versus North Marion, hoped to break their four-game losing streak.

“I’m just mostly happy for our guys because they have been working hard for us,” said Deleon.

The game started with both teams scoring on their first possession.

EHS received the ball the first and marched straight down the field behind junior running back Darian Smith-Williams.

Smith-Williams, who had three rushing touchdowns on the night, showed some hard running with his first scamper that helped EHS take a 6-0 lead.

Head coach Patrick Turner and the Panthers offense returned the favor with a quick score of their own.

Junior quarterback Jamarrie McKinnon converted on a 4th and long to senior Jamal Bryant for a touchdown pass to tie the game at 6.

PHS, being aggressive early, went for the two-point conversion as McKinnon called his own number and put the Panthers up 8-6 with 43 seconds left in the first.

It was setting up to be high scoring affair. However, penalties and turnovers halted drives offensively, and Palatka wasn’t able to hang with EHS on the scoreboard.

“Even in our scoring drive, we had to overcame mistakes and penalties,” Turner continued. “We shot ourselves in foot all night long, hats off to them they played mistake free football.”

Deleon and the Rams knew they had to find a spark to regain momentum. Fortunately, that came as halftime was approaching at the end of the second quarter.

With 26 seconds left until half junior quarterback Holden Johnson surveyed the field and found senior Andre Bradford for the score in the red zone to put EHS up 13-8.

“That definitely gave them the momentum,” said Turner. “They came out in the second half excited, probably a position they haven’t been in all year long.”

After a short kickoff return by the Panthers to start the third, offense had the opportunity to put themselves in scoring position with a nice run by McKinnon. However, a long snap over the head of McKinnon put the Panthers behind the chains forcing a punt.

The Rams continued their focus in the ground game marching down towards Panthers’ territory once more.

With the help of the offensive line guiding Smith-Williams to his second short yardage touchdown, they extended their lead to double digits, 20-8, with 7:47 left in the third quarter.

Palatka continued to struggle offensively as the rush started to get to McKinnon heading into to the fourth quarter.

“We might be the best practice team in America right now,” Turner continued. “We just do not execute right now on Friday nights when it matters.”

As the game was seemingly out of reach for Palatka to cultivate any sort of comeback late, EHS wanted to end the night on a high note.

With 3:48 left in the ball game, Smith-Williams completed the hat trick with his third rushing touchdown.

He credited his big touchdown performance on the ground towards his offensive line.

“My O-line helped me, that’s the only way I got there,” Smith-Williams said. “They were pushing me in the end zone and everything.”

Heading to into next week’s matchup with Santa Fe (Alachua), Smith-Williams said getting a win this week will definitely boost the team’s confidence.

“We weren’t happy losing,” Williams continued. “You see today everybody is leaving here with a smile on their face.”

Bolles (Jacksonville) remains unanimous No. 1 team in regional rankings as showdown with No. 2 Buchholz (Gainesville) looms this week

GAINESVILLE — The high school football season continues to roll through October and towards the postseason in the second week of November.

It’s time to look at district standings and computer rankings and whatnot. But there is still one huge regular season non-district game to look forward to this Friday, and it involves the top two teams in The Prep Zone Power Poll.

Bolles (Jacksonville), which is ranked No. 1 in the state in Class 4A, remains the unanimous No. 1 team, once again receiving all seven first-place votes after their second consecutive bye week. The Bulldogs (6-0) own wins over No. 5 Columbia (Lake City), No. 6T Trinity Christian (Jacksonville), No. 10 St. Augustine, and No. 13 University Christian (Jacksonville).

But Bolles faces another major challenge this Friday against No. 2 Buchholz (Gainesville) in a neutral-site game at Bradford High School in Starke. The Bobcats (6-1), who are ranked sixth in the state in Class 7A, are the unanimous 2nd-ranked team after easily going on the road for a District 2-7A win last week at Chiles (Tallahassee), 35-10.

Buchholz’s only loss this season was to defending 4A state champion Cardinal Gibbons (Fort Lauderdale), which was the last team to beat Bolles in last December’s state championship game at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee.

Vanguard (Ocala) moves up a spot to 3rd after pounding Lecanto, 40-6, in a District 5-6A matchup. Now the Knights (7-0) return home to face RV Belleview (7-1) in a game that may be for the district title.

Bartram Trail (St. Johns) moves up a spot to 4th after holding off rival No. 16 Creekside (St. Johns), 16-13, in a huge District 1-8A contest.

The Class 8A No. 5 Bears (6-1) won on a field goal on the final play of the game to send Creekside to its second straight loss after a 6-0 start. Bartram Trail faces another tough district contest this week at suddenly struggling No. 18 Oakleaf (Orange Park).

Columbia rounds out the top five. The Class 6A Tigers (6-2), coming off a come-from-behind win at No. 8 Riverside the previous week, easily won another road game, 42-14, at Orange Park to clinch the District 3-6A title.

Spruce Creek (Port Orange) and Trinity Christian (Jacksonville) are tied for 6th. The 7A Hawks remained unbeaten, improving to 7-0 with a 35-0 blanking of previously unbeaten then-No. 12 University (Orange City).

The 2A Conquerors (6-2) drop three slots this week after dropping their second game of the season, 31-17 at 3A No. 2 Florida High (Tallahassee).

Riverside remains 8th after a bye week to recover from their loss to Columbia. The Generals (6-1) return to action this week with another tough assignment, at Trinity Christian.

Hawthorne also stays at No. 9 and improved to 6-0 with a 39-0 romp at 4A Astronaut (Titusville). The Class 1A state runner-up Hornets return home this week to face 7A Forest (Ocala).

St. Augustine rounds out the top 10, as the Yellow Jackets (4-2) also had the week off. St. Augustine hosts Matanzas (Palm Coast) this week before facing Gainesville next Friday, October 29, in what could be a game for the District 4-6A title.

Class 1A Union County (Lake Butler) improved to 7-0 after blanking Hollis Christian Academy (Jacksonville), 42-0, last week. The Tigers are up two spots to lead off the second 10 this week at No. 11.

Oakleaf (4-3) fell from a tie for 10th to No. 18 this week after a 47-35 loss at RV Mandarin (Jacksonville).

University dropped seven spots to 19th after its first loss of the season, to No. 6T Spruce Creek.

There are no new teams to the rankings this week and no one fell out from the previous poll as well.

The Prep Zone Power Poll ranks the top 20 high school football, girls basketball, boys basketball, softball & baseball teams (regardless of FHSAA classification) across 26 counties in North Florida (Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Citrus, Clay, Columbia, Dixie, Duval, Flagler, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Hernando, Jefferson, Lafayette, Lake, Levy, Madison, Marion, Nassau, Putnam, Sumter, St. Johns, Suwannee, Taylor, Union & Volusia counties). It is voted on weekly by sportswriters and sportscasters and it is powered by Anytime Fitness of Gainesville.
