Buchholz (Gainesville) finishes No. 1 after first regional championship in 30 years

GAINESVILLE — After being knocked out by Niceville in the Class 7A regional semifinals a year ago, the Buchholz football team returned most of its starters and seemed set up for a big run.

As the high school football season came to an end the Bobcats fell short of the ultimate goal of a Class 7A state title. But Buchholz has put the program on the map statewide after a 12-2 season that ended in the state semifinals against nationally ranked and eventual state champion St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale).

The Bobcats won their first three postseason games at home against Fleming Island (Orange Park), No. 16 University (Orange City), and No. 10 Nease (Ponte Vedra) by a combined score of 111-28 to win Region 1-7A, their first regional title since 1991.

That was enough to garner Buchholz five of the seven first-place votes and the final No. 1 ranking in the all-classification regional rankings. The Bobcats also finished 16th statewide regardless of classification in MaxPreps’ season-ending poll.

Buchholz ended up just ahead of Bolles, which moved up one spot to 2nd in The Prep Zone Power Poll.

The Bulldogs (8-3) were knocked out in the 4A state semifinals at Cocoa, losing a double-digit lead in the second half. Bolles came up just short of its third straight 4A state championship game appearance.

Class 2A state champion Trinity Christian (Jacksonville) ends up 3rd.

The Conquerors, who won the 3A state title in 2020, moved down a classification and still picked up their ninth state title in school history. Trinity Christian rallied to win the state semifinal game at Orlando Christian Prep, then defeated defending 2A state champion Champagnat Catholic (Hialeah), 41-23, in the state title game in Tallahassee.

Trinity Christian (10-4), which received a first-place vote, moved up six spots from the previous poll. Their four losses all came to playoff teams from higher classifications – Bolles, 3A Florida High (Tallahassee), 7A Lincoln (Tallahassee), and 6A Riverside (Jacksonville).

Class 1A state champion Madison County finishes 4th. The Cowboys (11-3) moved up seven spots from the previous poll after capturing their fourth 1A state championship in the past five years.

Madison County earned the No. 3 seed in Region 2 and had to win three straight road games to advance to the state championship game. No problem, as the Cowboys pounded Blountstown, Port St. Joe and No. 15 Chiefland by a combined 117-6.

In the state title game, Madison County met Hawthorne, which knocked the Cowboys out in the state semifinal round a year ago on their way to a state runner-up finish. This time playing for the state title at Gene Cox Stadium, Madison County blocked a punt with 8:05 to play and recovered on the 2-yard line. They scored one play later to take a 13-12 lead. And that was enough for another championship for the Cowboys, who earned the final first-place vote.

Rounding out the top five is Vanguard (Ocala).

The Knights finished 12-1, being knocked out by Jones (Orlando) in the Region 2-6A final. Vanguard was ranked 2nd previously.

Baker County (Glen St. Mary), another state semifinalist, finished at No. 6.

The Wildcats, state runners-up in 2017, won their first three playoff games at home to claim Region 1-5A. But Baker County (11-3) then had to make the long trip to South Florida to Traz Powell Stadium for the state semifinal against Central (Miami), and their season ended there with a 54-21 loss to the eventual state champion.

Hawthorne remained 7th.

The Hornets (10-1) advanced to the 1A state title game for the second straight year, winning all of their Region 4 games, plus the state semifinal game at home against Chipley. But for the second straight year, Hawthorne came up just a bit short of its first state title, this time by one point to No. 4 Madison County.

Rounding out the top 10 are No. 8 Bartram Trail (St. Johns), 9th-ranked Riverside (Jacksonville), and No. 10 Nease (Ponte Vedra).

Both Bartram Trail and Riverside were eliminated in the second round of the 8A and 6A playoffs, respectively, while Nease advanced to the Region 1-7A final, where Buchholz knocked off the Panthers (9-4).

Nease still moved up five spots and into the top 10 after postseason wins at #14 Spruce Creek (Port Orange) and Niceville.

Mainland (Daytona Beach) moves into the final rankings at No. 18, while St. Augustine and Creekside (St. Johns) are also new to the rankings as both are tied for No. 20, along with Dunnellon.

Falling out from the previous poll is Nature Coast Tech (Brooksville).

The Prep Zone Power Poll ranks the top 20 high school football, girls basketball, boys basketball, softball & baseball teams (regardless of FHSAA classification) across 26 counties in North Florida (Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Citrus, Clay, Columbia, Dixie, Duval, Flagler, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Hernando, Jefferson, Lafayette, Lake, Levy, Madison, Marion, Nassau, Putnam, Sumter, St. Johns, Suwannee, Taylor, Union & Volusia counties). It is voted on weekly by sportswriters and sportscasters and it is powered by Anytime Fitness of Gainesville.

Andrew Jackson (Jacksonville) starts new season on top of regional rankings after back-to-back Final Four appearances

GAINESVILLE — With the new high school boys basketball season underway, there will probably be some major changes in The Prep Zone Power Poll as the weeks go by.

But the preseason rankings show many teams who hope to carry over major success from the 2020-21 season even with some changes.

The team starting this season at the top of the all-classification rankings is Andrew Jackson (Jacksonville).

The Tigers, who advanced to the Class 3A state semifinal last March after losing in the state championship game in 2020, moved up to 4A this season. Jackson, which finished 2nd a year ago in the final rankings, received four of the five first-place votes to start the new season in the top spot.

Starting No. 2 is defending 1A state champion Wildwood.

The Wildcats beat Madison County and Central (Milton) by a combined 41 points to take home their second state title in four years. Wildwood finished third in last year’s final rankings.

Last year’s top-ranked team, 4A state runner-up Santa Fe (Alachua), starts this season ranked 3rd.

The Raiders finished on top of last year’s final rankings after advancing to their first championship appearance in boys basketball program history, losing a heart-breaker to Pine Crest (Fort Lauderdale) in double OT in Lakeland.

Santa Fe has to replace the graduated big man Ernest Ross, who’s now playing for N.C. State. But junior point guard Dontrell Jenkins returns to help lead Coach Glen Banks in his first season as head coach after taking over for Elliot Harris.

Bolles (Jacksonville) is 4th.

The Bulldogs entered the postseason last winter at the top of the rankings but were knocked out in the opening round of the 4A playoffs by No. 5 Paxon (Jacksonville) in overtime. Bolles finds themselves back in the top five to begin the 2021-22 season.

Speaking of Paxon, the Golden Eagles round out the top five.

Paxon advanced to the state semifinals in both 2019 and 2020, but were knocked out in the Region 1-4A semifinal by West Nassau (Callahan), which eventually advanced to its first final four in school history.

The second five consists of No. 6 Bishop Snyder (Jacksonville), 7th-ranked Eastside (Gainesville), No. 8 Providence (Jacksonville), and Columbia (Lake City) and Ponte Vedra at No. 9 and No. 10, respectively.

Providence missed the state playoffs after being knocked out by Bishop Snyder in the District 2-3A semifinals despite a 21-5 record.

Ponte Vedra, which was eliminated by No. 17 Riverside (Jacksonville) in the second round of the 5A playoffs, received the other first-place vote.

West Nassau starts off the second 10.

The 11th-ranked Warriors advanced to Lakeland for the first time where they lost at the buzzer to Santa Fe. West Nassau must replace last year’s overall Florida Mr. Basketball Deebo Coleman, who is now at Georgia Tech.

Class 6A state semifinalist Forest (Ocala), which advanced to the final four for the first time since 1973, comes in at No. 14.

Right behind the Wildcats is last year’s 2A state runner-up Impact Christian Academy (Jacksonville).

The only team starting this season in the poll who was unranked in last year’s final ranking is #12 Trinity Catholic (Ocala).

The Prep Zone Power Poll ranks the top 20 high school football, volleyball, girls basketball, boys basketball, baseball & softball teams (regardless of FHSAA classification) across 26 counties in North Florida (Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Citrus, Clay, Columbia, Dixie, Duval, Flagler, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Hernando, Jefferson, Lafayette, Lake, Levy, Madison, Marion, Nassau, Putnam, Sumter, St. Johns, Suwannee, Taylor, Union & Volusia counties). It is voted on weekly by sportswriters and sportscasters and it is powered by Anytime Fitness of Gainesville.
