Prep Zone Power Poll – 2014 Baseball Poll – Week 3

creekside knightsGainesville – In a match-up of the top two teams in the baseball Prep Zone Power Poll, the top-ranked team prevailed to hold on to the No. 1 ranking.

Creekside (St. Johns) lost to 8A Sandalwood (Jacksonville), which moved into the poll at No. 16 following two top 20 wins last week.  But the 5A Knights (17-1) bounced back from their first defeat of the season last Wednesday with a convincing 8-2 win over No. 2 Clay on Monday night and were a unanimous #1.

The loss dropped the 5A Blue Devils (13-3) from second to third, while previous #4 Spruce Creek (Port Orange) moved up two spots to second.  Clay also defeated previous No. 10 Baker County (Glen St. Mary), 3-2, while the 8A Hawks (16-3) went 4-0 at the Central Florida Spring Break Slam at Dr. Phillips (Orlando).

Fleming Island (Orange Park) dropped from third to fourth following a 5-4 loss at West Nassau (Callahan).  The Golden Eagles’ (13-2) only other loss was against No. 3 Clay.

Rounding out the top five is Columbia (Lake City), which went 1-0 last week with a win against Class 6A-District 2 foe Orange Park.  The Tigers (13-2), who have won seven of their last eight games, remained fifth.

Hernando (Brooksville) (15-2) is ranked sixth, up three spots from ninth, followed by Bishop Kenny (Jacksonville) (12-4) at No. 7, Forest (Ocala) (13-3), Stanton (Jacksonville) (12-4) and Baker County (Glen St. Mary) (13-6), which moved up two spots to 10th following a 3-1 week and the narrow loss to Clay.

A pair of 7A schools, East Ridge (Clermont) and Atlantic Coast (Jacksonville), dropped out of the poll, while 6A Gainesville (11-6) re-entered the poll at No. 19.

Prep Zone Power Poll – 2014 Softball Poll – Week 4

Ponte VedraGainesville – For the third time in four weeks, there’s a new No. 1 in the softball Prep Zone Power Poll.

Ponte Vedra, which went 2-0 last week, edged previous No. 1 PK Yonge (Gainesville) in total voting points, 137-135, to move up one spot to the top of the poll.  The Class 5A Sharks (18-0) received four first-place votes, while the 4A Blue Wave, who were idle, received the other three.

Columbia (Lake City), which began the season as the top-ranked team, remained third.  The defending 6A state champion Tigers’ (14-1) only loss this season was to Santa Fe (Alachua), which dropped one spot to 18th in this week’s poll.

Class 5A Baker County (Glen St. Mary), which lost to Ponte Vedra in last year’s regional semifinals, remained fourth.  The Wildcats (16-1) have won 14 in a row since their only loss of the season to No. 3 Columbia.

Forest (Ocala) and Bradford (Starke) are tied for fifth.  The 6A Wildcats (15-1) were off last week, while the 4A Tornadoes (12-3) went 2-0 and moved up one spot from sixth.

The rest of the top 10 remained the same.  Hernando (Brooksville) (17-1) is seventh, followed by Nature Coast (Brooksville) (17-2), Creekside (St. Johns) (12-3) and Citrus (Inverness) (15-4).

There were no new additions to this week’s poll as all 20 teams remained in the rankings.

Prep Zone Power Poll – 2014 Baseball Poll – Week 2

creekside knightsGainesville – Creekside (St. Johns) remained on top of the baseball Prep Zone Power Poll.

The Knights (16-0) stayed unbeaten with a 3-0 week, including a 6-3 victory against previous No. 4 Stanton (Jacksonville) at the Baker’s Sports Tournament.  Creekside collected all seven first-place votes.

Previous No. 2 Fleming Island (Orange Park) dropped one spot to third following its first loss of the season.  The Golden Eagles (12-1) defeated previous #19 Fernandina Beach, 2-0, but they lost to previous No. 5 Clay (Green Cove Springs), 6-1. The Blue Devils (12-3) moved up three spots from fifth to second following the victory.

Class 8A Spruce Creek (Port Orange) (12-3) moved up two spots from sixth to fourth.  The Hawks went 2-0 on the week and improved to 12-3.

Columbia (Lake City) rounds out the top five.  The Tigers (12-2) knocked Gainesville out of the poll with a 4-0 victory and moved up two spots from seventh to fifth.

Columbia (Lake City) lost for the first time this season, a 2-0 defeat to Santa Fe (Alachua), which moved the Raiders (13-6) into the poll for the first time at No. 17.  The top-ranked Tigers (14-1) dropped to third, while PK Yonge (Gainesville) moved up one spot to No. 1.

The Blue Wave (15-0) received five of the seven first-place votes.  Ponte Vedra (16-0), which is ranked second, received the other two first-place votes.

Meanwhile Baker County (Glen St. Mary) (13-1) and Forest (Ocala) (15-1) round out the top five.

Prep Zone Power Poll – 2014 Baseball Poll – Week 1

creekside knightsGainesville – The first baseball Prep Zone Power Poll of the season is a close race for No. 1.

Creekside (St. Johns) and Fleming Island (Orange Park) are both 11-0.  But the Class 5A Knights, who reached the 5A state semifinals last season, edged the Golden Eagles, who lost in the first round of last year’s 7A playoffs, by one total voting point, 136-135, and will begin on top of the rankings.

Second-ranked Fleming Island actually had one more first-place vote, 4-3, but they received two third-place votes and dropped to second.  Creekside did not receive a vote lower than second in the poll.

Bishop Kenny (Jacksonville), which is off to a 9-1 start, is ranked third.  The Crusaders are followed by Stanton (Jacksonville) (10-1) and Clay (Green Cove Springs) (11-3) in the top five.

Class 8A Spruce Creek (Port Orange) (10-3) is ranked sixth, while Hernando (Brooksville) (11-1), Forest (Ocala) (10-1) and Columbia (Lake City) (11-2) are all tied for 7th, and they are followed by 8A DeLand (9-3) and 4A Trinity Catholic (6-1) – who are tied for 10th.

Defending Class 5A state champion Ponte Vedra, which went 5-0 last week and won the Tournament of Champions in Jacksonville featuring past state champions, is ranked No. 15.  The Sharks (8-5) won the Class 5A state title in 2013, just the second such title for a team from St. Johns County.

They are tied for 15th with Trenton.  The Tigers (10-2) won the Class 1A state title last season and return Jon Ward, the 1A Player-of-the-Year, and SS Stephen Smith, who was the quarterback and led the football team to a state title as well.

The only other unbeaten team in the poll, Seven Rivers Christian (Lecanto) (9-0), rounds out the top 20, just ahead of Baldwin, Bolles (Jacksonville) and Atlantic Coast (Jacksonville) – who all received 20 or more total voting points but fell just outside the top 20.

Columbia TigersGainesville – The No. 1 team in the softball Prep Zone Power Poll remained the same.

Columbia (Lake City) went 4-0 last week, including at 16-0 win over previous No. 13 Suwannee (Live Oak) and held on to the top spot.  The Tigers (14-0) improved from three first place votes from last week’s first softball poll of the season to four this week.

PK Yonge (Gainesville) is ranked second.  The Blue Wave (14-0) received three first place votes and remained a close second to Columbia after a 3-0 week that included a 6-4 win over district rival Santa Fe and two shutout victories over another district opponent, Fort White.

Ponte Vedra (16-0) remained in third after a 5-0 week that included four wins at the South Florida Slam Fest at Palmetto Bay in Miami and a win over district foe and previously fourth-ranked Creekside (St. Johns)  Nature Coast (Brooksville) and Baker County (Glen St. Mary) are in a tie for fourth after both teams also went undefeated last week.  Forest (Ocala) lost to previous No. 19 Belleview and is now in a tie for sixth with Bradford (Starke). The Tornadoes were off last week for Spring Break.

Creekside dropped games to Ponte Vedra and Atlantic Coast (Jacksonville) and dropped from fourth to eighth. East Ridge (Clermont) and undefeated Dixie County (Cross City) round out the top ten.

The second ten is led by Bartram Trail (St. Johns), who fell one spot from 10th to 11th after a loss to St. Augustine.  The biggest movers up this week include Hernando (Brooksville), who moved up four spots from 16th to 12th after going 3-0 last week, and Belleview, who moved up from No. 19 to No. 14 after a 3-0 week that included the win over Forest.  Mandarin (Jacksonville) moves into the poll this week at #20 replacing Bishop Snyder (Jacksonville), who dropped from #18 to out of the rankings after a 1-3 week.
