Lafayette (Mayo) Hornets (Class 1A-District 5)

2013 Record:  7-3

Head Coach:  Joey Pearson

Key Players:  Brycen Lee (QB, Sr.), Lee Jones (RB/LB. Sr.), Logan Hewett (WR/DB, Sr.), Tim Fleming (WR/DB, Sr.), Myles Byrd (LB, Sr.), Will Boney (LB, Sr.), Kayne Hurst (WR/LB, Jr.), Kyle Mercer (LB, Sr.), Mason Byrd (OL, Sr.)

Outlook:  After winning the district title in 2012, the Hornets were runners-up last season and lost to eventual 1A state champion Trenton, 50-21, in the first round of the state playoffs. However, with seven starters returning on offense and eight returning on defense, this year’s team has enough experience to take back the district and make a deep run in the postseason.

Lee (1,388 yards passing and 20 total TDs) is a three-year starter at quarterback, while Jones (1,008 yards, 8 TDs) led the team in rushing and Fleming (42 catches, 619 yards, 7 TDs) was the team’s top wide receiver.  Byrd (117 tackles, 11 TFL, 2 sacks) was the team’s leading tackler last season, while Boney (72 tackles, 8 TFL) finished second on the team. Plus, Mercer led the team with five sacks and Fleming led the team with five interception.

Hamilton County (Jasper) football preview

trojans_hamilton_county

Hamilton County (Jasper) Trojans (Class 1A-District 5)

2013 Record:  5-6

Head Coach:  Blair Armstrong

Key Players:  La’Marcus Webb (RB/WR/DB, Sr.), Marcus Williams (C/DT, Sr.), Hunter Hill (OL/DL, Sr.), Lamar Brown (RB/WR/DB, Jr.), Malik Randolph (RB/LB/DB, Jr.), Deangelo Robinson (LB/OG, Sr.), Amaad Gandy (OT/LB/DL, Jr.), Kentwan Daniels (QB/RB/DB, Jr.), J’Quan Cole (QB/RB/WR/DB, Sr.)

Outlook:  The upcoming season looks bright, but there are few returning players with experience. However, this year’s team brings some postseason experience. The Trojans lost to eventual 1A state champion Trenton in the 2nd round of the state playoffs. With a prolific, balanced attack, the small-school Trojans played a tough schedule that included one 3A school, two 4A schools, and one 5A program. They also played four 1A teams that were ranked top six in the state at the time.

With eight returning starters on both sides of the ball, the Trojans hope to take it further in the playoffs, but they have to face two tough district opponents in Lafayette and Jefferson.  There is a battle for QB between two seniors and one junior. All three have different skills and abilities, and they all do a great job of leading the wide-open offense. Randolph brings some experience in the backfield after finishing second on the team last year with 325 yards rushing, while Webb led the team with 303 yards receiving.

Defensively, the hard-hitting, stingy Black Swarm will bring speed and experience to the field. Discipline, focus and hard work are on the agenda for 2014, according to Armstrong.

Branford_Buccaneers

Branford Buccaneers (Class 1A-District 5)

2013 Record:  3-7

Head Coach:  Roy Harden

Key Players:  Anthony Akers (WR/DB, Sr.), Caleb Land (TE/LB, Sr.), Brandon Wilson (RB/DB, Sr.), Alec Burt (RB/LB, Sr.), Shawn Belanger (TE/LB, Sr.), Kenyon McFatten (DT, Jr.)

Outlook:  The Buccaneers struggled down the stretch as they lost five in a row to end the 2013 season. In order to have a chance at a winning season, they will have to shore up the defense.  Last year, Branford allowed an average of 37 points per game, including 48 points per game in three district games.

Akers (33 tackles), Land (32) and Wilson (31), who also had 82 carries for 376 yards and four TDs, return on the defensive side of the ball. They will have a stable of running backs with varsity experience in Wilson, junior Jason Chavez, and Burt, while juniors Nathan Sumner, Johnathan Carrier and Jeremy Onuska return on the offensive line, along with senior Blake Darling.

Oak Hall (Gainesville) Eagles (Independent)

2013 Record: 1-9

Head Coach: Scott McDaniel

Key Players: Robert Yancey (OL/DL, Sr.), Alec Sharkey (G/T, Sr.), Matt Davis (TE/DE, Jr.), Chase Trunnell (QB/LB, So.), Jackson Carey (RB/LB, So.), Spencer Moreno (WR/DB, Jr.)

Outlook: With only sever upper classmen (three seniors and four juniors) on a roster of 24, the Eagles will be young once again. The good news is that many of those underclassmen got valuable experience during an eventful 2013 season. That experience will hopefully allow the young guys to grow up quickly and lead the Eagles this season.

Trunnell, Carey, Michael Akey (29 tackles as a freshman), Chance Mayo, Dillon Whittle, and Michael Fortner are all talented sophomores who will be counted on to play big roles on both sides of the ball. Trunnell was the team’s second leading rusher last year and also threw for 524 yards and six TDs. Sharkey and Yancey will anchor the offensive and defensive lines along with Davis, while Moreno will lead a young group of receivers and defensive backs.

St. Francis Catholic (Gainesville) football preview

st francis wolves_football

St. Francis Catholic (Gainesville) Wolves (Independent)

2013 Record:  1-9

Head Coach:  David LaMarre

Key Players:  Danny Veilleux (QB/WR/S, Sr.), Austin Tucker (LB, Sr.), Brenden Abrams (DT/OG, Sr.), Austin Manning (FB/OLB, Sr.), Monroe Thornton (SB/CB, Jr.), Lexie Scott (PK, Sr.), Tristen Dailey (C/NT, Jr.)

Outlook:  The Wolves have most of their team back from last season, including 16-18 players that started or saw substantial game time. “Our players know our offensive and defensive schemes and understand what is expected of them now, so that should help this coming season,” said LaMarre, who is entering his second season as the school’s third head coach. “And we have a handful of freshmen that are coming into the school that should help right away.”

St. Francis is playing in a new conference/division with other private schools their size, so they should be fairly competitive in the race to make the Sunshine State Athletic Conference playoffs.  Lack of depth and overall numbers are still a concern and they have a lot of youth at several positions, but they return eight starters on both sides of the ball. Tucker (80 tackles, 4 INT, 1 fumble rec. for a TD) returns as the leading tackler on defense while Thornton rushed for 614 yards and seven TDs to pace the ground game. Overall, LaMarre is optimistic about their success in 2014 and excited about his team’s potential.

Ocala Christian Academy Crusaders (Independent)

2013 Record:  5-5

Head Coach:  Jason Zimmerman

Key Players:  Trevor Smith (QB/DB/FS, Sr.), Garrett Artman (DE/OL, Jr.), Jacob Miller-Smith (FB/LB, Sr.), Zach Rowe (OLB/RB/WR, Sr.), Nick Weitlauf (WR/OLB, Sr.)

Outlook:  OCA, which graduated only three seniors, returns Trevor Smith at quarterback. Smith has accounted for 3,063 yards and 30 TDs the past two seasons. He’ll have a playmaker in Weitlauf, who led the team with 37 catches for 462 yards in 2013.

Defensively, with the return of Miller-Smith and Rowe, who combined for 152 tackles, the Crusaders will be strong in the middle.  The linebacker corps will anchor a defense that allowed only 256 yards per game last year.

“This team never gives up,” OCA coach Jason Zimmerman told the Ocala Star Banner after a come-from-behind spring game win over St. Augustine Florida School for the Deaf and Blind. “Our last two games of last season we won on the last possession, so they have that confidence that if we have any time left, we can go down and score.”

The Crusaders trailed 16-14 with 2:58 to play in the spring game, but Smith connected with Rowe on back-to-back plays – a 20-yard pass completion, followed by the game-winning 24-yard toss.   Rowe finished with six catches for 75 yards in the game, while Weitlauf hauled in five catches for 66 yards.  Miller-Smith also added a score with an 80-yard fumble return.

Seven Rivers Christian (Lecanto) Warriors (Independent)

2013 record: 0-9

Head Coach: Rayburn Greene (1st year)

Key Players: Sterling Gardner (QB/FS, Sr.), Kelin Massullo (RB/DE, Jr.), Jimmy Worster (C/DT, Sr.), Allen Rivers (ILB/OL, Sr.), Nate Winstead (WB/OLB, Fr.), Joshua Iwanic (FB/ILB, So.)

Outlook: Greene takes over after a four-year stint at Inverness Citrus, where he went 9-2 last year with a playoff appearance. Now he’ll try and parlay that experience into success at his new school.

Depth is a concern, and the players have to play on both sides of the ball. But there were no seniors last year. Everyone is back. They also won their spring game against Citrus Park, 59-13, marking the first time that they had tasted victory in over a year. The Warriors had over 400 yards rushing in the spring game and the Warriors held their opponent to just 95 yards of total offense.

“That was a great springboard heading into the summer after going 0-9 last year,” said Greene. “If we stay focused it, and take it week by week, we can have some success this season.”

Lecanto Panthers’ football preview

Lecanto Panthers_logoLecanto Panthers (Independent)

2013 record: 2-8

Head coach: Greg Harper (1st year)

Key Players: Ardante “DeDe” Anderson (RB/DL, Sr.), Travis McGee (QB, Jr.), TeAndre Hopkins (WR/DB, Sr.), Peter Forges (RB/LB, Sr.), Antonio Crumbley (RB/DB, Jr.), Jordan Lee (OL/DL, Sr.)

Outlook: Harper takes over for McKinley Rolle, who won five games in 2012, the most wins for the program since 2001. Harper is looking to turn around the program, which opened the 2013 season with a 2-0 start, but the Panthers dropped their final eight games of the season. However, of those eight losses, four were by seven points or less.

A total of six starters will return on offense for the Panthers, including McGee, who threw for 1,209 yards and eight TDs as a sophomore. The return of Anderson will give the backfield some much needed experience. The rising senior averaged 5.1 yards per carry and he led the team with six rushing scores. He will also be one of the leaders on a defense that returns six starters. Anderson led team with tackles (65) and tackles for a loss (13).

Bishop McLaughlin Catholic (Spring Hill) Hurricanes’ football preview

Bishop McLaughlin Catholic (Spring Hill) Hurricanes (Independent)

2013 RECORD:  2-8

Head coach:  Craig Moore (1st year)

Key Players:  Noah Clanahan (TE/FS, Sr.), Will Beatty (OL/LB, Sr.), Will Potosky (TE, Sr.), Eric Pitton (HB/S/TE, Sr.), Colin Hankin (DE/TE, Jr.), Jonah Moor (FB/LB, Sr.)

Outlook:  Bishop McLaughlin, which is in only its 7th season of football, will compete as an independent in 2014 after a winless district record in Class 3A-District 4.  In 2013, the Hurricanes won their season opener against Santa Fe Catholic, 36-21, but fell apart defensively by allowing 416 points in their next eight games.  However, they did win their season finale against Keswick Christian, 35-3.

“We are excited about the upcoming season,” said first-year coach Craig Moore, who takes over for former Florida State star Derrick Alexander. “We have a strong core group to build around.”

The Hurricanes return four starters on defense and four starters on offense. Moore feels the new defensive approach will be much better. The offensive scheme will fit their personnel to get the maximum performance. Potosky (599 yards receiving) and Clanahan (328 all-purpose yards, 77 tackles) should be two of the leading contributors for the Hurricanes again this season. They’re also expecting big things from Moor, a transfer from Canada.
