Trenton wins Class 1A state baseball title

Trenton baseball state champs

Chalk up another state baseball title for the North Central Florida area.

Last year, Lafayette (Mayo) won its first state baseball title in school history.

The Hornets, ranked 4th at the time in ThePrepZone.com state baseball rankings, won the FHSAA Class 1A state title with a 2-0 win against top-ranked Chiefland.

Williston won back-to-back 1A titles in 2014 and 2015 behind Austin Langworthy, who is now playing at the University of Florida.

Prior to that, Trenton won it in 2013 and Union County (Lake Butler) took home the title in 2012.

In fact, since the FHSAA put the Rural Division in place, all six state champions have come from the area.

On Thursday night at Hammond Stadium in Fort Myers, the Trenton Tigers continued the streak against a pesky Madison County team which was making its first-ever appearance at the state tournament.

The top-ranked Tigers edged the Cowboys, 3-2, to win the Class 1A state baseball title. It was their second state championship in the past five years.

Senior Michael Smith, who won his fourth state title (2 in football, 2 in baseball) gave Trenton an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, scoring on an error by the Cowboys (19-11).

“Michael’s a seasoned veteran,” noted second-year Trenton coach Adam Burton. “He’s a hell of a competitor.”

Madison County scored twice in the bottom of the 4th inning to take the lead.

With two outs, sophomore Dilan Lawson hit a triple and then scored one batter later on an error at second base. The error opened the door as the Cowboys plated another run on an RBI single by junior Drew Annett for a 2-1 lead.

However, Trenton answered in the top of the fifth.

After loading the bases, back-to-back wild pitches brought home the tying and go-ahead run to give the Tigers a 3-2 lead.

The one-run lead was enough for junior Landon Kennedy, who tossed a 5-hitter and allowed no earned runs.

“He absolutely competed,” said Burton. “He got excited and dislocated his left shoulder in the second inning. He came out and threw strikes and gave us a chance to win.”

Kennedy was able to pop it back into place and finish the game in moving to 8-0 on the season.

“Before the game Coach Shannon (Smith) told me to finish every pitch and keep fighting because it was going to be a dog fight,” said Kennedy.

That it was.

In the bottom of the 7th with one out, 8th-grader Jacob Guthrie made a diving catch in right field to take away a hit. Then, Jatatvious Prince had a 2-out double and stole third to keep Madison County’s hopes alive.

With the tying run at third, Kennedy was facing a pitch count before getting Kris Allen to ground out to Kennedy on his 99th pitch of the game.

While Prince and Allen are seniors, there’s plenty of talent returning for the Cowboys to make another run in 2018.

“These guys made history,” said Madison County coach Terry Barrs. “The bar has been set high. We put Madison County baseball on the map.”

With only four seniors, Trenton will be among the favorites to make it back to Fort Myers and could see Madison County again.

The Tigers (27-1) will carry a 20-game winning streak into next season.

Trenton & Madison County to play for Class 1A state baseball title

fhsaa shieldIt would make for a great match-up on the football field.

Instead, Trenton and Madison County will play on the diamond to decide a state championship.

The top-ranked Tigers defeated Sneads, 10-0 in six innings, in the FHSAA Class 1A state semifinals at Hammond Stadium in Fort Myers.

Trenton (26-1) scored seven runs in the fourth inning, aided by three Pirates’ errors, and cruised to its 19th consecutive victory.

Freshman Wyatt Langford drove in three runs and senior Trent Simmons, a Hillsborough Community College signee, pitched a complete game 2-hitter with six strikeouts.

Junior Chase Malloy and junior Daniel Plank each had two hits, while 8th-grader Jacob Guthrie added 2 RBI for Trenton, which is seeking its second state baseball title in five years.

In the other semifinal, Madison County spent all afternoon playing catch-up.

Down 1-0 in the bottom of the third, junior Drew Herring reached on an error. He would later score on senior Kris Allen’s ground out to short to tie the game.

Santa Rosa Beach South Walton (23-7) reclaimed the lead, 3-1, in the top of the fourth with two runs.

However, the Cowboys (19-10), winners of nine in a row, rallied again.

Junior Jae Mitchell, who finished 3-for-3, led off the bottom of the fourth with a double and then scored on a single to left by Herring. Junior Drew Arnett, who had been hit by a pitch, scored on a sacrifice fly by Allen to tie the game.

Neither team scored in the fifth and sixth innings.

With the score tied 3-3 entering the bottom of the seventh, junior catcher Dustin Bass hit a fly ball to left center field to lead off the inning.

However, the outfielders collided, and neither player made the catch. Bass went all the way to third on the play.

The next batter, sophomore Dilan Thompson, hit a bloop single to right field to score courtesy runner Ken’auntre Adams with the game-winning run.

The Class 1A state championship game is on Thursday at 4:35 p.m. This will be the first meeting between the two teams this season.

2017 FHSAA Softball Finals recap

Mike_Ridaught_photo at SouthernBy Mike Ridaught

Of the nine state champions crowned at last week’s FHSAA Softball Finals at Historic Dodgertown in Vero Beach, four were first-time winners.

Lake Butler Union County (1A), Land O’ Lakes (6A), Ft. Myers (7A) and Orange Park Oakleaf (8A) won their first fast-pitch state softball title in school history. In the process, two of them knocked off defending champs or No. 1 teams to do so.

Union County, which had a walk-off win against Chipley in the state semifinals, defeated 3-time defending state champion Chiefland in the 1A state championship game, 5-1.

It completed a 3-game season sweep of the Indians, who had a chance to become the first 4-peat champions since Miami Gulliver Prep in 2013. Bartow holds the record with five straight from 2002-2006.

Land O’Lakes had to beat the top-ranked team in Class 6A to win its first title.

The No. 3 Gators defeated No. 1 Plantation American Heritage, 3-1, as sophomore Callie Turner tossed a five-hitter and struck out eight in the complete-game victory. Turner, who struck out 21 in a game this season, is a Gatorade Player of the Year finalist.

Fort Myers was a favorite in Class 7A based on the Miracle Sports state softball poll, which had the Green Wave ranked No. 1 in its classification. They defeated No. 3 Niceville, 7-1, for the state title.

In the 8A state title game, nationally-ranked Oakleaf defeated Wellington, which had defeated defending state champion Bartow in the regional quarterfinals. The Knights (30-2), who are in their seventh year as a program, won the second state softball title in Clay County history and finished the season with the state’s longest winning streak at 26 games.

Only two teams repeated.

Nationally-ranked Coral Springs Charter (30-1) won the Class 5A state title, becoming the first Broward County team to 3-peat.

“This team is not as talented from top to bottom as some of our prior teams so it’s been more gratifying to witness the success,” said fifth-year coach Mark Montimurro.

Defending 9A state champion Winter Garden West Orange won its second straight title with a 1-0 win against Palm Harbor University. Last year’s Miss Softball, Lauren Mathis, tossed a complete-game 4-hitter with only one walk and 13 strikeouts.

One of the highlights in their win against top-ranked Miami Palmetto in the state semifinals was Lexie Blair’s inside-the-park home run. Blair, who has verbally committed to Michigan, scored the game-winning run in the title game.

Mathis, a Georgia signee, pitched four innings against the Panthers in the semifinals and allowed just one hit and no walks with eight strikeouts in the 11-0 win.

St. Petersburg Canterbury won the Class 2A state title. It was the Crusader’s fourth state title in the past seven years and they denied Monticello Aucilla Christian of a third straight title.

Ft. Pierce John Carroll, which won the 3A state title, won its second state title but its first since 1996. They avenged their loss to defending state champion Lakeland Christian in last year’s state semifinals with a 4-1 win in the 2017 title game.

Miami Westminster Christian had a walk-off win against Jacksonville Trinity Christian in the 4A state semifinals, scoring the winning run on an error in the bottom of the 7th. That helped propel the Warriors (26-5) to the state title, as they went on to defeat West Palm Beach Oxbridge Academy, 4-2, in the championship game to win their fourth title overall and second in the past four years.

Union County wins 1st fast pitch state softball title

Marty PallmanBy Marty Pallman

VERO BEACH — The third time was the charm for the Union County Tigers softball team. And the fourth time wasn’t a charm for Chiefland.

Union County took advantage of six Chiefland errors to win the 1A state championship game 5-1 Thursday afternoon at Historic Dodgertown in Vero Beach.

It was the first state softball title for the Tigers (23-2) and ended a run of three straight 1A softball championships for Chiefland (21-7).

Union County junior pitcher Lexi Androlevich scattered four Chiefland hits and walked only one to finish with a final record of 18-1.

It was quite a contrast from Wednesday’s semifinal game for Androlevich, who hit three batters in a row and was pulled in the first inning of that game against Chipley.

The Tigers scored three runs in the bottom of the 7th to rally past Chipley 4-3 to advance to Thursday’s championship game.

The only earned run for Union County came in the first inning, when senior catcher Devin Lewis lined a double into the right field corner to make it 1-0. Lewis also had the game winning two-run double in the game against Chipley in the bottom of the 7th on Wednesday.

After Chiefland tied it in the third on an RBI double by Emily Hallman, Union County responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good.

The Indians committed two errors in that inning, and Union County eventually took the lead on an RBI’s from Lewis and Brooke Waters to make it 3-1.

Chiefland loaded the bases in the top of the 4th, but Androlevich worked out of the jam with a strikeout.

Union_County_TigersUnion County kept adding to the lead in the 5th on an RBI single by Madelyn Kish, and added a final insurance run in the 6th as Macey Fulgham scored on an error to extend the Tigers lead to 5-1.

Kensley Durrance took the loss in the circle for Chiefland, despite allowing only one earned run on four hits. Hits between the two teams were even 4-4 but the six Indian errors were the difference as Union County beat Chiefland for the third time this year.

Chiefland says goodbye to six seniors, including Hallman, Sydney Parks, and Takiya London, who have been the backbone of a program that had won 1A state titles in 2014, 15, and 16.

The Indians scored two runs in their final at-bat of the state semfinal game on Wednesday to beat Wewahitchka 2-1 and advance back to the championship game.

This was Union County’s first state title game appearance as the Tigers lost to Wewahitchka in the 2016 semifinals and lost to Lafayette in the same round in 2012.

Union County had been the top-ranked team in the Miracle Sports State Softball Poll for most of this season.
