District showdown in Ocala: Vanguard hosts Gainesville

Gainesville High School has a tough road game on Friday when they take on undefeated Vanguard. This will be a big district game for the pair in 6A-District 5. The Hurricanes currently have a 4-2 record overall, including 2-0 in the district, and the Knights have a 6-0 record overall and 2-0 in league play.

Vanguard has won the last four meetings in the series and leads the all-time series 13-11.

Previous Game:  Last week Gainesville lost 27-7 in a rivalry game against Buchholz. The Canes scored their only TD in the first quarter. Isaac Meacham is the Gainesville receiver that scored the TD. He had 6 receptions that night for 56 yards. QB Luke Matthews went 17-30 for 159 yards.

Last week was Vanguard’s bye week but the week before they crushed the Leesburg Yellow Jackets, 59-3. The Knights scored 45 points before the half.

Vanguard on average scores about 35.8 points a game compared to Gainesville’s average of 30 points. The Knights have outscored their last three opponents, 135-29.GHS Football

Gainesville averages 109.8 yards rushing and 288.8 passing yards a game. On the defensive side of the ball the team gets 50.2 tackles a game. Running back for the Canes Niles Cromwell has had a great season averaging 55.3 yards a game. Quarterback Luke Matthews puts up 288.3 yards a game. On defense Caleb Washington averages the most tackles on the team with 9.8 per game.

Game Time

The game between the ‘Canes and the Knights, ranked third in the AP state rankings in Class 6A,  is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on 10/12/18 at Vanguard.
