Series: Buchholz 25, Gainesville 18
Buchholz, ranked 7th in Class 7A, won this game last year on a last-second FG to snap a five-year losing streak to their rival. This is a non-district game but both teams are in first place in their district and will likely make the playoffs this year. Both teams have a HUGE district games next week (Gainesville vs. Ocala Vanguard on Thursday & Buchholz vs. St. John’s Bartram Trail on Friday), but they will be focused for this game. With Buchholz’s win last year, this year’s game will feel more like a rivalry game – for both teams.
Coby Weiss hit a 40-yard FG as time expired to give the Bobcats a 23-20 win last year. The win snapped Buchholz’s five-year losing streak to GHS. Buchholz was off last week. They won at 7A #2 Oakleaf (Orange Park) for their first win in 7A-District 3. Buchholz has not had a winning season since 2004 (8-4 under Jay Godwin; in 2012 they were 6-6 in Mark Whittemore’s first season). They have been one of the surprises in Alachua County. Buchholz is averaging 34.4 points per game.
Gainesville rallied at Ocala Forest by scoring 28 unanswered points and beating the Wildcats on the road. Forest was off to its best start since 2008 but the Purple Hurricanes got the win to improve to 2-0 in 6A-District 5. They’ve got a big game next Thursday against Ocala Vanguard in what could be for the district championship. GHS has won three straight district titles. They are seeking their 7th straight postseason appearance. Gainesville is averaging 32.7 points per game.
Here are three key position battles between the ‘Canes and the Bobcats
QB – Caelan Christian with 1,123 yards, 10 TD & 3 INT for GHS in six games; Jackson White has 1,047 (76 fewer yards), 13 TD & 3 INT in five games for the Bobcats
RB – Four players have gone over 100 yards rushing on the season for Gainesville, led by Chris King with 352 yards on 74 carries for an average of 4.8 yards per carry and four TD’s, including three in the win against Forest last week. Torrey Richardson is the only player over 100 yards on the ground for Buchholz so he is their featured back with 319 yards on 61 carries for an average of 5.2 yards per carry & five TDs
ATH – Gainesville’s Raijahn Alexander had five kickoff returns for 241 yards against 7A Columbia so he’s got big-play capability. However, he was suspended and has missed the last two games. Coach Mark Latsko had not made a decision on whether or not Alexander would play tonight. Buchholz has Marcus Clayton, who had 149 yards in kick returns against Columbia and 125 against Vanguard. He’s returned two kickoffs for TD’s
Buchholz’s only loss was at Columbia by 12. Gainesville lost at Columbia by 18 and also lost at North Marion by 9. Gainesville is a slight 2-point favorite according to Joe Pinkos.
