GAINESVILLE – And then there were two.
The number of unbeaten baseball teams has been cut in half as we head into the final three weeks of the regular season. Orlando Olympia, which is ranked No. 1 in the county in the MaxPreps Top 50 National Baseball Rankings, and St. Augustine St. Joseph Academy* are the only undefeated teams remaining in Florida.
*NOTE – The Flashes lost their first game of the season on Monday to 5A Dunnellon, 4-2, but we did not have this score at press time.
The Titans, who went 4-0 last week, remained the top team in Class 8A, while the Flashes (12-1) are sixth in the loaded Class 3A rankings of theprepzone.com state baseball poll.
Lynn Haven Mosley, which lost twice last week, and Fort Myers Canterbury suffered their first defeats of the season.
The nationally-ranked Dolphins (14-2) had a win and a loss against a nationally-ranked team as part of a 2-2 week at the National High School Invitational in Cary, North Carolina, but they dropped one spot to No. 2 in the Class 5A state rankings. Rockledge (16-2), which was nationally-ranked a couple of weeks ago, went 3-0 last week and moved up one spot to the top of the rankings.
The Cougars (14-1), who remained No. 1 in Class 3A, lost their first game of the season last Wednesday at Naples Barron Collier, which is on the cusp of being ranked in Class 6A. Winter Haven (15-3), which is 7th overall in the all-classification rankings, remained No. 1 in that classification.
Classes 6A & 3A have a total of 19 teams each that are either ranked or receiving honorable mention, the most of any of the eight classifications.
Once again the Sunshine State is represented in the national polls with a total of seven teams ranked in the top 50: Oviedo (1), Lake Worth Park Vista (3), Mosley (10), Boca Raton (13), Ft. Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas (29), Haines City (45) and Winter Haven (49).
