The Sonic Drive-In Player-of-the-Game for Friday, January 4, is Dez Overton-Dailey of the Vanguard (Ocala) boys’ basketball team.
Overton-Dailey scored a team-high 13 points as the Knights defeated rival Forest (Ocala), 49-46, in a battle for first place in Class 7A-District 4.
The junior scored six of his 13 in the final quarter for Vanguard, which improved to 5-5 overall and 2-1 in the district. The Knights moved ahead of the Wildcats, who dropped to 9-3 overall and 2-2.
“It was a great game overall, a great game, great atmosphere,” said Vanguard’s first-year head coach Todd Davis. “Both teams got after it and it was a game that you want to come out and defend your home court and we did a good job of that.”
Sophomore Tony Johnson added 11 rebounds and had two critical steals in the final seconds to help seal the win. Senior Blake Porter scored eight of his 10 points in the first half.
The Knights are back in action on Saturday night at home against Buchholz (Gainesville), followed by a league game at home against Lake Weir (Ocala) on Tuesday. The Wildcats travel to Lake City for a district game at Columbia on Tuesday.
Every game The Prep Zone will recognize a Player-of-the-Game. The recipient receives a $10 gift certificate courtesy of Sonic Drive-In of Gainesville & Ocala.
