Trenton football preview

The Trenton football team is expecting to make it back-to-back state playoff appearances this fall.

Head coach Bill Wiles returned for his third stint with the Tigers last year and led Trenton to the Class 1A state playoffs, falling to rival Chiefland, 21-13, in the regional quarterfinals.

“Before all this craziness hit us we were having an excellent off season,” he said. “We had a ton of kids lifting. Time will tell if we can put it back together when we get the all clear.”

With only four senior starters lost, the Tigers should be back in the mix again as one of the top six teams in Class 1A-Region 4.

Tyler Perry had a breakout sophomore season as he threw for 1,101 yards with 17 touchdowns and just three interceptions. He also rushed for an area-best 1,969 yards on 251 attempts with 18 scores.

However, according to Wiles they need to find offensive lineman that will come off the line of scrimmage with low pads and be physical. They didn’t have that last year.

“Offensive line is an attitude,” he said. “It’s a demeanor. We must cultivate that. Offensive line is the first priority for us.”

Next, Wiles said that they’ve got to increase the number of skill players in the program.

“We can’t play defensive ends at safety, which we did last year,” he said. “We played way too many kids out of position due to necessity. We were well on our way to addressing that.”

Lastly, he said his team has to have more players that really “want to”.

“We have great kids here, but we have got to be tougher, more physical, way more mental toughness,” said Wiles. “And more about ‘We’ than ‘I’.”

Trenton will open up the 2020 season on August the 21st at Interlachen. Last year, the Tigers beat the Class 3A Rams in the season opener.

School: Trenton
Coach & year: Bill Wiles
2019 record: 5-6
Number of returning offensive/defensive starters: “We lost four senior starters.”
Key losses: Jacob Morgan (OL/DL), Brian Karanja (H Back/DB), Justin Calton (OL), Tyrese Jackson (WR/DB), Trent Becker (TE/DL/LB)
Key newcomers (Name, position & year): “Can’t say (missing spring ball prevents us from knowing).”
Most important position battles heading into the fall: I don’t know if position battles is the right way to put it for us. We need to find offensive lineman that will come off with low pads and be physical. We didn’t have that last year. OL is an attitude. It’s a demeanor. We must cultivate that. OL is the first priority for us. After that we have got to increase the number of skill kids in the program. We can’t play DEs at safety (which we did last year). We played way too many kids out of position due to necessity. We were well on our way to addressing that. Lastly, we have got to have more that really “want to”. We have great kids here, but we have got to be tougher, more physical, way more mental toughness and more about WE than I.
Outlook/expectations: We always expect to compete at a high level, be in the playoffs. Before all this craziness hit us we were having an excellent off season. We had a ton of kids lifting. Time will tell if we can put it back together when we get the all clear.

Bronson football preview

By Mike Ridaught
Twitter – @ridaught

Last season the Bronson football program took a big step.

They’ll look to take another big step in 2020, but under the direction of a new leader.

Russell Holley, who was the team’s defensive coordinator last season, takes over as head coach for Seth Stebbins.

Holley, who enters his second year of coaching overall at Bronson, was part of an Eagles’ team that went from winless the previous season to a 4-6 record this past fall.

He said he expects his team “to be competitive and continue to build on a 4-win season from last year.”

Even a .500 season would be considered a big success at Bronson, which has struggled on the gridiron.

In 2014, the Eagles finished 6-4 under then coach Cameron Porch. It was Bronson’s first winning season in over 10 years.

However, Bronson has just six wins since, including an 0-10 season in 2015, and an 0-10 record in 2018 under Stebbins in his first season as head coach.

Holley, a former Oak Hall School assistant, is off to a good start despite the limitations because of Covid-19.

“We started virtual Zoom spring football on Monday (April 27) and will go until May the 18th,” he said. “We are having team meetings and review on Mondays, defensive team on Tuesday, offensive team on Wednesday, and on Thursday and Friday position group meetings on offense and defense. We are able to install our terminology expectations and defense and offense formations and schemes.”

A total of nine starters return on offense and eight starters return on defense, giving the Eagles a strong nucleus to work with.

Bronson will compete in a tough Class 1A-Region 4, which includes 2019 playoff teams Chiefland, Hawthorne, Newberry, Trenton, Wildwood, and Pahokee. Six of the top 10 teams in the region will make the postseason.

The Eagles are scheduled to open the regular season on Friday, August 21, at St. Francis Catholic (Gainesville).

What you will miss most about playing at CHS: The three things I’ll miss most about playing at CHS are my teammates, my coaches, and the Columbia High School community cheering us on at home games. The love I have for this team this year is irreplaceable. It’s disappointing that our season got cut short, because this was one of my favorite teams. We all got along so well. I’m going to miss playing with my senior girls so much. I’m going to miss Coach Trudy (Andrews), Coach Wayne, and Coach Megan too. My four years of playing we’re all with the same head coaches, so the bond is something I’m going to really miss when I leave. Coach Trudy loved us as her own. I’m going to miss her a lot. I’m also going to miss the home game atmosphere. Caroline and I always used to joke around with each other about how we’re not supposed to have the home game jitters as seniors! But we did anyways. Playing in front of packed bleachers while everyone cheers after a big hit or a diving play is what I’m going to miss the most. Throughout my four years the whole community was behind us as a team, and that’s something a lot of high schools don’t have the privilege of experiencing.
Plans after high school: I plan to attend the University of Central Florida (undecided major)

Name: Caroline Lewis
School: Columbia High School (Lake City)
Sports played: Softball
Stats: Career .359 hitter with 60 hits, 49 runs scored, and 37 runs driven in 77 games played
Most Memorable Softball Moment: “My most memorable softball moment was my junior year during a home game against West Nassau (Callahan). West Nassau was always one of our biggest competitors. Wins against them were always viewed as one of our biggest wins, which is what made this memory so special. It was the last inning and they had runners on second and third, with the winning run on second. Two outs, and the atmosphere was tense. The ball was pitched and shot out to center field. I dove, catching it in the air. When I looked up to prove I had it in my glove, the fans were all on their feet and the team was running towards me. The feeling was indescribable.”
Favorite Quote: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” – Philippians 4:13
Plans after high school: After graduating, I will further my education at the University of Florida and major in Business Management.

Name: Cadence Mirra
School: Columbia High School (Lake City)
Sports played: Softball
Most memorable softball moment: My most memorable softball moment was our last home game being seniors. The thing I remember most is before every at bat I was able to look in the stands and see my family and friends all together supporting me. No matter how I did that game I knew when I left I was going to feel love, and they are who I play for. I didn’t know that it would be the last time I would step on the field with my girls but knowing I had my backbones there to support me made that last game the best one yet.
Special Thanks: I would like to give a special thanks to my dad. My dad was my coach growing up and softball was our way to bond. He introduced me to the game, and was always my number one fan in the stands. I also want to give a thanks to Mrs. Highland. She always gave me encouraging words before a game. She gave me encouraging words every day and it really impacted my life. My last thanks goes to my travel ball coaches, Timmy Taylor and Butch Hartman. They stuck with me through one of the toughest seasons I’ve had, and still believed in me which made me believe in myself even more.
Favorite Quote: There is POWER in the tongue. When prayers go up, blessings come down.
Plans after high school: I will be furthering my education at Saint Leo University, and after completing my education I will be going into the academy for Florida Highway Patrol. I planned to compete at the next level, but God took me down another path. I am very grateful for the offers on the table, but my future is beyond softball.

Sports played: Softball, volleyball, and girls weightlifting
Achievements: Gainesville Sun 1st team All-Area selection in softball (2018 & 2019) & 2nd team All-Area in weightlifting (2020)
Most memorable high school sports moment: My senior year preseason, I was playing 2nd base and we had a first and third play going on so I go for a cut off and had the runner in a run down in between third and home, but I ended up falling and having to be carried off the field in pain and thinking to myself nothing is wrong. However, later I find out that I had a complete tear of my ACL and would be out for the rest of the season. This was a very hard time for me but I was glad I still could watch all my girls play even though our season got cut short.
Favorite Quote: “Keep your face always toward the sunshine, and shadows will fall behind you.”

Join Mike Ridaught & Marty Pallman as they talk high school sports from Sonic Drive-In of Gainesville.  The FHSAA canceled high school sports for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year.  We’ll discuss what that means moving forward.

FHSAA CORONAVIRUS Update – April 20, 2020

GAINESVILLE, FL – Following Governor Ron DeSantis’ announcement mandating schools continue distance learning for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year, it is with heavy hearts that the FHSAA has decided to cancel all FHSAA affiliated events, inclusive of the state series and all championship events, for spring sports.  The safety of our student-athletes, coaches, officials, and fans is our top priority.

With the evolving threat of the CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19), we must ensure that we do not contribute to the spread of this illness. We are deeply saddened for our student-athletes who have seen their seasons and/or high school careers end so abruptly. Our Association knows the impact and role high school athletics play in the lives of so many and will continue to work towards the betterment of high school sports. We know this is a trying time, but the health and safety of all is of utmost importance to this Association.

Under the guidance of the Florida Department of Education regarding grade level retention, and upon review of the Florida Statutes and FHSAA Bylaws, no additional eligibility will be granted for spring sport athletes. For clarification regarding student-athlete eligibility, click here.

To all our senior student-athletes, we thank you for dedicating your time and efforts to your school, your coaches, and your teammates. Cherish the memories you have made and embrace all that the future holds for you. While we are saddened that you are unable to compete this season, we could not be prouder to have been represented by such hard-working individuals.

Our Association is eager to reconvene all sports in the 2020-21 school year. In the meantime, we strongly encourage everyone to continue adhering to the recommendations of the CDC and your local health departments during this hiatus.

Please remember to practice social distancing, frequently wash your hands and avoid touching your face. For the latest CDC updates, click here.

Still no sports, but lots of sports info

High school sports throughout the Sunshine State are on a mandatory hiatus through at least May 4. The same can’t be said around the country.

On Tuesday, Utah’s governor announced that high schools would not have any further in person learning this year, which led to an easy decision for the Utah High School Activities Association.

“Without school continuing, there was no recourse to continue spring sports and activities,” said UHSAA Assistant Director Jon Oglesby.

Utah became the 22nd state to cancel spring sports for this year.

But in light of the current situation with COVID-19, the Florida High School Athletic Association remains in a holding pattern.

Players, coaches, parents, and fans, along with countless others, shouldn’t have to wait much longer on a verdict regarding whether Florida will cancel high school sports for this season. We will likely learn the fate of high school sports here in Florida within the next two weeks.

If students don’t return to their respective schools by the beginning of next month, high school sports for this season will be over. For now, there is still a chance.

The FHSAA staff has been “actively working on creative solutions for the continuance of spring sports, which could extend through June 30th.”

If students return to school on Monday, May 4, that means there is a still a chance we could have spring sports in 2020.

On April the 9th, the Ohio High School Athletic Association took a proactive look at that possibility by releasing a restructured spring sports schedule.

As an example, Monday, May 4, would be a Non-Interscholastic date, followed by an acclimation period, with the season beginning on May 9 (OHSAA Announces Tentative Details for Spring Sports Seasons).

Time will tell, but the clock is ticking. Social distancing and doing our best to “flatten the curve” will be essential these next two weeks.

Despite the fact that there have been no sports for us to broadcast for over a month, there have been plenty of sports information for us to talk about in just the last week.

Here is some of what you might have missed:

Slaughter is one of three top 100 offensive linemen who will play for Trinity Catholic in 2020. The Celtics are coached once again by John Brantley, who takes over for Andrew Thomas. Thomas is now at Union County.

We continue to deliver high school sports in an effort to inform, and to try and keep everyone’s spirits up.

The Prep Zone Power Poll powered by Anytime Fitness – 2020 Baseball Poll #1

Creekside (St. Johns) back on top of regional all-classification baseball rankings as season is delayed by coronavirus pandemic

GAINESVILLE — The first baseball all-classification regional baseball rankings for the 2020 season has a familiar feel to it.

That’s because Creekside (St. Johns) is still on top on The Prep Zone Power Poll.

The Knights, who advanced to the 7A state semifinals a year ago and finished as the #1 team in the final 2019 rankings, were 8-2 when the baseball season and the public school year in the state of Florida were put on hold due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

Included in Creekside’s early season run were wins over #2 Spruce Creek (Port Orange), #10 Atlantic Coast (Jacksonville), and #16T Fleming Island (Orange Park). Their only losses came to RV Bishop Kenny (Jacksonville) and #18 Providence (Jacksonville).

That was enough to give Creekside five of the seven first-place votes as the Knights just edged out Spruce Creek by one total voting point for the top spot.

Spruce Creek (10-1) received the other two first-place votes as they are ranked 2nd in this first poll of the season.

The Hawks’ only loss came to Creekside 5-2 on March 13 in the final game before the season and the schools were closed down.

Episcopal (Jacksonville) is 3rd after picking up some big early season wins.

The Eagles (7-1) knocked off #4 Oakleaf (Orange Park) 6-4 and #20 Sandalwood (Jacksonville) 6-2 and also picked up a win over Paxon (Jacksonville), which was a regional finalist last season and finished 7th in the final baseball power poll in 2019.

The Eagles’ only loss to this point came against Atlantic Coast.

Oakleaf is 4th as the Knights are 6-2 with wins over #11 Clay (Green Cove Springs), RV Bolles (Jacksonville), and Fleming Island (Orange Park).

Rounding out the top five is North Marion (Citra).

The Colts (6-1) have split two games with the team right behind them in the rankings, No. 6 Buchholz (Gainesville). North Marion won the first meeting on the Bobcats’ home field in their opening game of the season 15-7 on February 20, but Buchholz picked up some revenge, 8-2, in Citra early in March for the Colts only loss to this point of the season.

North Marion also owns a win over #15 Dunnellon, which knocked the Colts out of the 6A regional semifinals last season 16-13.

After Buchholz in the second five is Fletcher (Neptune Beach), which is ranked 7th, Flagler Palm Coast at #8, Bartram Trail (St. Johns) 9th, and Atlantic Coast rounds out the top 10.

Flagler Palm Coast and Atlantic Coast weren’t ranked in the final poll a year ago, and of the four teams listed above, only Bartram Trail advanced to the regional playoffs in 2019.

Among the highlights in the second 10 is Suwannee (Live Oak), ranked 13th.

The Bulldogs are off to a 5-3 start but are coming off a trip to the 5A state semifinals last season, their first trip to the final four in 52 years.

Suwannee finished tied for fourth with Spruce Creek in the final regional poll for the 2019 baseball season.

Among those teams receiving votes is defending 1A state champion Williston.

Florida schools will remain closed until May 3 to follow the directives of the Centers for Disease Control along with Governor Ron DeSantis and Commissioner of Education Richard Corcoran.

The FHSAA has not made any decisions on cancelling spring sports and postseason play at this point, and could extend the season through June 30.  You can read the latest FHSAA update here.

The Prep Zone Power Poll ranks the top 20 high school football, basketball, baseball & softball teams (regardless of FHSAA classification) across 26 counties in North Florida (Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Citrus, Clay, Columbia, Dixie, Duval, Flagler, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Hernando, Jefferson, Lafayette, Lake, Levy, Madison, Marion, Nassau, Putnam, Sumter, St. Johns, Suwannee, Taylor, Union & Volusia counties). It is voted on weekly by sportswriters and sportscasters and it is fueled by Anytime Fitness of Gainesville.
