Prep Zone Power Poll – 2014 Football Poll #10

mainlandMainland (Daytona Beach) remains on top; only one ranked team fell last week

Gainesville – The top teams in the Prep Zone Power Poll are jockeying for position in their quest to bring home state titles to the north part of the state.

In fact, there was little change in the top 10 as Nos. 1-8 remained the same and Nos. 9 and 10 flip-flopped.

Mainland (Daytona Beach) is a unanimous selection as the top overall team for the second consecutive week. But the nationally-ranked Bucs (8-0) still must beat Seabreeze (Daytona Beach) this week to win 6A-District 9 and earn home field advantage for the first round of the FHSAA state playoffs in two weeks.

First Coast (Jacksonville) defeated West Port (Ocala), 41-2, to become 8A-District 1 champions. The Bucs (8-0), who had two defensive touchdowns and a punt return for a score, were a unanimous selection as the No. 2 team.

The Class 5A-District 6 champion, South Sumter (Bushnell), remained third. The Raiders (9-0) stayed unbeaten with a 42-10 win over Weeki Wachee. They have a chance to go undefeated for the third regular season in a row with a win at Leesburg in the regular season finale next Friday.

Defending 5A state runners-up Clay (Green Cove Springs) remained fourth following a 48-20 win over Palatka that wrapped up the 5A-District 4 championship. J.T. Turner rushed for 152 yards, passed for 117 and accounted for five TDs in the game for the Blue Devils (8-1).

Rounding out the top five is defending 3A state champion Trinity Christian (Jacksonville). The Conquerors (6-2) defeated Warner Christian (South Daytona), 48-0, for their first shutout of the season. They will play at RV Providence (Jacksonville) on Thursday for the Class 3A-District 1 title.

Class 5A Suwannee (Live Oak) remained ranked sixth. The 5A-District 5 champions Bulldogs (8-0) defeated 4A Fort White, 31-3, and are just two wins away from their first unbeaten regular season since 1962.

Oakleaf (Orange Park) is still seventh. The Knights (8-0), who were off last week, will host RV Fletcher (Neptune Beach) for the Class 7A-District 3 championship this Friday.

St. Augustine defeated Creekside (St. Johns), 49-14, in a battle of unbeaten teams in 6A-District 4. The Yellow Jackets (7-1), who are ranked eighth, set a state record with their 46th consecutive district victory dating back to a loss to Palatka in 2003. It was their 11th consecutive district title during that span.

Rounding out the top 10 are Trinity Catholic (Ocala) and Dixie County (Cross City).

The Celtics (7-1) moved up one spot to ninth following a 37-0 win over 6A Lake Minneola. It was the second consecutive shutout for the Celtics, who will play for their seventh straight district title this Friday against Father Lopez (Daytona Beach) in 3A-District 2.

Meanwhile, the Bears (7-0), the top-ranked team in Class 1A, dropped one spot to 10th following a 38-8 win over Newberry. Dixie County, the 1A-District 7 champ, has won 15 consecutive regular season games.

South Lake (Groveland), which has advanced to the playoffs for the first time in 18 years, was the only ranked team to fall. The Class 6A Eagles lost to 5A Mount Dora, 49-34, and dropped from 11th to 17th in this week’s poll.

The Prep Zone Power Poll ranks the top 20 high school football, basketball, baseball & softball teams (regardless of FHSAA classification) across 26 counties in North Florida (Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Citrus, Clay, Columbia, Dixie, Duval, Flagler, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Hernando, Jefferson, Lafayette, Lake, Levy, Madison, Marion, Nassau, Putnam, Sumter, St. Johns, Suwannee, Taylor, Union & Volusia counties). It is voted on weekly by sportswriters and sportscasters.

Trophy Shop Athlete-of-the-Week

Trophy ShopOur Trophy Shop Athlete-of-the-Week Presented by State Farm agent Mark McGriff for the week of October 20 is Caysaun Wakeley* of the Santa Fe (Alachua) football team.

Caysaun Wakeley_Santa Fe

*Despite falling in triple overtime at North Marion last Friday night that ended Santa Fe’s postseason hopes, Wakeley was a big reason the Raiders were close in a 35-28 loss.  The junior outside linebacker recorded 14 tackles, had one sack and added two tackles for a loss.  On offense, Wakeley finished with five carries for 20 yards rushing, plus both touchdowns for the Raiders (5-3) in overtime on two 4-yard scoring runs.

Past winners:

October 13 – Ahmad Ivey (Gainesville)

Ivey had a big night as the Hurricanes defeated Vanguard (Ocala), 36-29, in a key Class 6A-District 5 game. The senior had a pair of TDs, returned a kickoff 82 yards for a score and had the game-winning interception in the end zone on 4th-and-goal with 18.2 seconds left. Ivey, who leads the state with an average of 45.1 yards per kick return, also finished with 77 yards rushing on only 12 carries, including a 20-yard reverse on a 3rd-and-7 to keep the ‘Canes game-winning drive alive in the fourth quarter.

October 6 – Coby Weiss (Buchholz)

Weiss drilled a 40-yard field goal as time expired to lift Buchholz to a 23-20 win over Gainesville, which snapped the Bobcats’ five-year losing streak to their rival.  The sophomore, who made three on the night, had made a 41-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to tie the game.

September 29 – Monroe Thornton III (St. Francis Catholic)

Thornton returned a kickoff 70 yards for a touchdown, just after Oak Hall had scored the first touchdown of the game, and it gave the Wolves the spark they needed in a 49-14 win over their rival. The junior finished with 181 all-purpose yards as St. Francis won its third consecutive game for the first time in three years. Thornton had scoring runs of 31 and 10 yards and also had eight tackles on defense.

September 22 – Courtney Chappell (P.K. Yonge)

Chappell had 18 kills, 45 digs, 33 service points, six aces and four blocks in four games for the Blue Wave. The senior helped lead the Blue Wave to a 4-0 week with wins against defending 5A state champion Bishop Moore (Orlando), 7A Tallahassee Leon, 7A Lake Nona, a regional finalist in 2013, and 2013 3A state runners-up The First Academy (Orlando).

September 15 – Antwan Durn (Union County)

Durn broke current Buffalo RB C.J. Spiller’s school record with seven touchdowns as the Tigers (4-0) defeated Interlachen, 59-0. The junior ran for 204 yards on 15 carries and also had one reception for 30 yards.

September 8 – Julian Robinson (Dixie County)

In a match-up of the top two teams in the state in Class 1A, Robinson rose to the occasion and ran for 316 yards on 28 carries and four TDs as the Bears snapped the Tigers’ 22-game home winning streak with a 48-25 win. The junior, who has an area leading 727 yards rushing, had scoring runs of 63, 52, 50 and 32 yards.

September 1 – Charles Strong (P.K. Yonge)

In his varsity debut, the freshman ran for a game-high 119 yards and a score. Strong, who averaged 9.9 yards per carry, helped lead the Blue Wave to their first 1-0 start since 2011 with a 35-0 win at Bell.

August 25 – Caelan Christian (Gainesville)

Despite a 44-43 loss in overtime to state-ranked Columbia (Lake City), Christian had a career game for the Hurricanes. The junior completed 28-of-38 for 317 yards and three touchdowns, along with a rushing score, as the ‘Canes amassed 531 yards of total offense. Christian connected with seven different receivers on the night, including a 25-yard touchdown pass to Dock Luckie in overtime.

Florida’s #HSFB Top 25 state poll

FloridaHSFBTop25Logo-TransparentThe end result of the Battle of American Heritage’s shake up the Top 25

Tuesday, October 28, 2014

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The battle between both American Heritage programs end up resulting a shake up Florida’s HSFB Top 25 heading into Week 10.

American Heritage-Delray (6-1), which has now been on a six game winning streak since losing to Miramar Week 1, has found itself as the fastest riser in the poll after giving Class 5A favorite, American Heritage-Plantation (5-3) a run for its money Friday night in a 45-35 win. The Stallions rised up from No. 23 to No. 19.

However, American Heritage-Plantation suffered the biggest drop in the poll this week going from No. 10 last week all the way down to No. 22 for a fall of 12 spots. The Patriots will try to rebound this week as they close in on another district title with a major district contest against Cardinal Gibbons.

Booker T. Washington (9-0), keeps possession of the first place receiving a unanimous 22 first place votes after defeating Miami Norland, 28-14 and will face Miami Edison in the game can clinch them another district tittle.

Special Note: Due to possible pending tiebreakers that could have an effect on some teams that are either ranked or receiving votes, next week’s release of the Top 25 will occur on Wednesday instead of Tuesday.

The Prep Zone Insider

Friday, October 24

“The Prep Zone” Insider is back again for the 2014-15 season. It’s overdue, but it’s here to stay.

It will be a monthly look at high school sports in our coverage area. For those who don’t know, our current coverage area includes 26 counties – Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Citrus, Clay, Columbia, Dixie, Duval, Flagler, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Hernando, Jefferson, Lafayette, Lake, Levy, Madison, Marion, Nassau, Putnam, Sumter, St. Johns, Suwannee, Taylor, Union & Volusia counties.

As we head into the last two weeks of the district season, the playoff picture becomes much clearer. Some teams have already clinched district titles while others have an opportunity to do so tonight. In fact, I’ll have a complete update on all the district football races in our coverage area, along with a look at the high school volleyball playoffs, in a few days. Until then, here is a quick recap based on football games that were played last night.

In 5A-District 5, Santa Fe (5-3, 2-3) gave North Marion all it could handle. It was Homecoming and Senior Night for the Colts, who survived in three overtimes, 35-28. That means North Marion is the district runner-up, which clinched the 15th consecutive postseason appearance for the Colts (6-2, 4-1). The Raiders (5-3, 2-3) lost starting QB Jemari Ford in the third game of the season, but rushed for 253 yards on 49 carries and almost kept their postseason hopes alive. Suwannee (Live Oak) won the district and will host in the first round of the 5A state playoffs. It was the first district title for the Bulldogs (7-0, 5-0) since 2003.

Columbia (Lake City) rolled to a 56-10 win at Lee (Jacksonville) to clinch a state playoff berth. The Tigers (6-2, 4-1) would be the runner-up in 6A-District 3 if Ed White (Jacksonville) (6-1, 4-0) wins at Middleburg and wins the title for the second consecutive year. Columbia has advanced to the playoffs in all four years under Coach Brian Allen.

Gainesville seeks its third consecutive district title tonight. All the ‘Canes (4-3, 3-0) have to do is win at Citrus (Inverness) (4-3, 1-1) to wrap up 6A-District 5. If that happens, look for Forest (Ocala) to get the runner-up spot. However, the Wildcats (3-4, 2-1) have a big rivalry game against Vanguard (Ocala) on Halloween night that could determine their playoff fate.

Raines (Jacksonville) defeated West Nassau (Callahan), 40-14, last night. The Vikings (6-3) went undefeated (4-0) to win the title in 4A-District 3, with the winner of next week’s Bolles (Jacksonville)-West Nassau game getting in as the runner-up.

St. Augustine defeated Creekside (St. Johns), 49-14, to keep the streak alive in winning 6A-District 4. The Yellow Jackets (7-1) have won 46 district games in a row and 11 straight district titles.

Oakleaf (Orange Park) has clinched a spot in 7A-District 3, along with Clay (5A-District 4), Creekside (St. Johns) (6A-District 4), along with Providence & Trinity Christian, who will play each other next week for the Class 3A-District 1 title.
