Sonic Drive-In Player-of-the-Game for April 4 – Trent Becker (Trenton)

Sonic-logoThe Sonic Drive-In Player-of-the-Game for Thursday, April 4, is Trent Becker of the Trenton baseball team.

Becker set the tone early as the Tigers defeated Williston on the road, 7-0, in a match-up of top 10 teams in Class 1A.

The junior pitcher did not allow a baserunner until the fourth inning on a walk and he didn’t allow a hit until the fifth inning.

Becker (4-1), who entered the game with a 0.91 ERA, only allowed the one hit in five innings of action.  He walked two and struck out six.  He was also 2-for-3 at the plate.

Trenton (11-3), ranked 9th in 1A, would get all the runs it would need in the first inning.Trent Becker Trenton POG 040419

Senior Zach Hardee led off the game with a single, stole second, and scored on a throwing error after senior Blake Hall reached on an infield hit.  The throw by shortstop Ethan Davis was wild, allowing Hardee to score and Hall to go to third.

University of Florida commit Wyatt Langford followed with an RBI double to score Hall for a 2-0 lead.  Langford went to third on a fielder’s choice by sophomore Jacob Guthrie, but another error at short allowed Langford to score on a throw to first.

Trenton, which scored four runs in the first and added single runs in the 4th, 5th & 7th innings, will host Bell for a 1A-District 7 game on Friday night at 7 p.m.  Williston (8-5), which committed six errors, will travel to Hilliard for a 1A-District 6 game on Friday night at 6 p.m.

Every game The Prep Zone will recognize a Player-of-the-Game. The recipient receives a $10 gift certificate courtesy of Sonic Drive-In of Gainesville & Ocala.

ThePrepZone.com Sports Report with Mike Ridaught on “The Tailgate” (WRUF Gainesville)

Mike RidaughtMike Ridaught joined Zach Alboverdi on The Tailgate (WRUF-98.1 FM & 850 AM) on Thursday, April 4, for ThePrepZone.com Sports Report presented by SunState Federal Credit Union. Here is a recap of the interview:

Tonight, it’s a small school showdown in high school baseball between Trenton & Williston.

Let me give a brief history of these two baseball programs. Trenton won the most recent state title between the two just two years ago. Trenton also won the 2013 championship, while Williston won back-to-back state titles in 2014 and 2015 with Austin Langworthy, who is now at Florida. Those two championship teams with Langworthy were pretty good. The 2014 team finished 25-4 and had the 1-2 punch of Langworthy and Trenton Johnson on the mound. Johnson was 10-2 with a 0.52 ERA and Langworthy was 7-0 that year with astonishing 0.00 ERA. That was Langworthy’s sophomore year. Johnson graduated but Langworthy went 11-1 with a 0.36 ERA his junior year and the Red Devils went 28-2 to win the title again.

But those two Trenton teams that won the title were really good too. In 2013, Trenton batted .370 as a team and had a 1.13 ERA. They finished 27-1. That team was coached by Todd Bryant, who is now the head coach for the softball team, which is ranked No. 1 in the state. The thing that was even more memorable about 2013 was that was the same year the Trenton football team won a state title – which is the only time in recent memory that an area team has won a state football title and a state baseball title in the same school year. The 2017 Trenton team went 27-1, finished with a 20-game winning streak, batted .344 and had a team ERA of 1.64.

Now, fast forward to tonight. The head coach of Trenton is Scott Hall, who was the head coach at Williston when they won back-to-back state titles. Trenton is 10-3 and ranked 9th in the state in Class 1A. Williston, which is coached by Jim Smith, is 8-4 and ranked 10th in 1A. Trenton is led by junior Wyatt Langford, who is batting .433. He is a Florida commit. They also have another Wyatt who will be playing D-I baseball. Junior Wyatt Duthu is a Florida Gulf Coast commit. Williston has four losses but they’re all to bigger classification schools, so I expect a good one tonight over in Levy County.

Spring break for Alachua County and several area teams are on the road – including one Gainesville team which is playing in the Big Easy.

We’ll start with Gainesville softball, which is actually playing right now. The Hurricanes, who are ranked 6th in the state in Class 7A, are in central Florida for the Kissimmee Classic. The first pitch was scheduled for 4 p.m. against Class 8A Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas. Although Aquinas isn’t ranked, they aren’t that far outside of the top 10. Either way, it’s a good test to start the tournament and the further you go the tougher the competition. It’s the fourth year in a row that Gainesville has played in this prestigious tournament, which includes some of the top teams in the state.

The Buchholz baseball team is playing three games in Volusia County this week. The Bobcats lost at New Smyrna Beach, 7-3, on Tuesday, and then were shutout at Port Orange Spruce Creek yesterday, 3-0. They’ll play New Smyrna Beach again today – also at 4 p.m. It would be nice to see the ‘Cats get a win because after an 8-1 start, they’ve lost five in a row.Sunstate Logo

The Gainesville baseball team ended its 2-game spring break tour in memorable fashion yesterday. They were down 2-0 in the first inning with the bases loaded & nobody out at Palm Coast Matanzas, but the Hurricanes executed a triple play to get out of the inning. That sparked nine unanswered runs for the Hurricanes en route to a 10-4 come from behind win. Gainesville won at St. Augustine Menendez, 9-1, on Tuesday, to go 2-0 over in Flagler & St. Johns County. Buchholz and Gainesville are heading in opposite directions. The ‘Canes have now won four in a row and will now have a week off before returning to district play at Ocala Vanguard next Wednesday.

But probably the coolest spring break trip belongs to P.K. Yonge. They are on their way back today from their New Orleans spring break trip. They got to do stuff like visit the national World War II museum, Jackson Square, which is a National Historic Landmark in the center of the French Quarter, some nice restaurants in the New Orleans area so I’m sure they ate well, and they travelled in style in a luxury motor coach.
But all of these trips are great bonding opportunities for the kids.

Spring sports seasons are winding down, including state championships taking place as early as next weekend.

Arnold High School in Panama City Beach will host the boys weightlifting state championships next weekend. One guy to keep an ear out for is Agelu Nunu. He’s Samoan. He’ll be a senior next year for the Union County football team. He’s a 6’2, 285 pound DT/DE. He’s been receiving interest from Georgia, Tennessee, USC. Earlier this spring, he set a state record with a 520-pound bench press. He did 225 pounds a total of 44 times! He finished 2nd in the state last year in the Class 1A unlimited weight division to Jacob Alvarez of Starke Bradford. But it’s not only the best bench press. The judging also includes the best clean and jerk too and he missed a state title by five pounds so I’m interested in seeing how he does, especially since he’s improved his bench by about 30 points. He benched 480 at state last year.

In two weeks, the postseason for lacrosse will begin. I think the Oak Hall boys can make a run. You know, the interesting thing about lacrosse vs. other sports. In sports like baseball, where you have nine state champions in Classes 1A-9A, everyone in lacrosse is in the same classification so it’s so hard to win an all-classification state title in lacrosse. But Oak Hall got to the regional final last year and fell just one game shy of the Final Four. The Oak Hall girls also got to the region final last year. The Oak Hall boys are a little better than the Lady Eagles but both are having a really nice year.

The tennis district tournaments are in a couple of weeks, with the state championships later this month, then we’ll wrap up with track & field, softball and baseball, but this is the final month of the regular season for softball. The baseball regular season ends the first week of May, and also mark your calendar for Saturday, April the 27th – the First Allowable Day of Football Spring practice (contact).

GAINESVILLE – The race for the top spot in The Prep Zone Power Poll is wide open.

There are three main contenders – all of whom have a chance to make a run for a state title in their respective classifications. Creekside (St. Johns) garnered the most voting points (126) among the trio that includes 9A Spruce Creek (Port Orange) & 5A state runner-up Bolles (Jacksonville).

The Class 7A Knights (10-1), who finished 21-8 last season with regional playoff wins at Columbia (Lake City) and St. Augustine before losing 3-2 at eventual 7A state runner-up Pace in the Region 1-7A final, is ranked No. 1.

They received two first-place votes and are five voting points ahead of No. 2 Spruce Creek (121 voting points), which has three first-place votes.

The Hawks opened the season 9-0 but recently lost a pair of games to Seminole (Sanford). Spruce Creek, which finished 17-8 in 2018, was District 2 Runners-up last year and lost at Lake Mary in the 2nd round of the 9A state playoffs.

The third-ranked team in the regional all-classification rankings is perennial power Bolles, which just missed out on its third consecutive 5A state title last season after surrendering eight runs in the 6th inning in a 10-4 loss to Monsignor Pace (Miami) in the state championship game.creekside knights

The Bulldogs, who finished 24-6 last year, also received two first-place votes. Bolles (10-2) has losses this season to 9A Mandarin (Jacksonville) & 6A Clay (Green Cove Springs), which is ranked seventh, by a total of two runs

Another 9A school, Sandalwood (Jacksonville), is ranked 4th.

The Saints (11-2) have wins against #17 Atlantic Coast (Jacksonville), RV Fleming Island (Orange Park), and RV Mandarin. One of their two losses was to 9A #9 Southridge (Miami).

Rounding out the top five is Trinity Christian (Jacksonville), which advanced to the 4A state semifinals last season.

The Conquerors (19-9 last season) just missed a 20-win season, falling 2-1 loss to Calvary Christian (Clearwater), which had a 60-game winning streak end with a loss to Calvary Christian (Fort Lauderdale) in the 4A state championship game.

Trinity Christian (10-4) has wins against Providence (Jacksonville), 4A region finalist Trinity Catholic (Ocala) – twice, & 7A Niceville. They have losses to defending 7A state champion Venice, 8A state semifinalist George Jenkins (Lakeland), & 6A region finalist American Heritage (Plantation).

Providence (Jacksonville) leads off the second five at No. 6. The Stallions (9-5) started 9-1 but lost four in a row to some good baseball teams: 3A state runner-up North Florida Christian (Tallahassee), George Jenkins, American Heritage, & Trinity Christian (Jacksonville).

However, Providence also has some big wins against NFC, Venice & 6A region finalist Mosley (Lynn Haven).

Class 6A state semifinalist Clay (Green Cove Springs) is seventh, followed by No. 8 Fletcher (Neptune Beach), Bartram Trail (St. Johns) and Suwannee (Live Oak) in the top 10.

The Prep Zone Power Poll ranks the top 20 high school football, basketball, baseball & softball teams (regardless of FHSAA classification) across 26 counties in North Florida (Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Citrus, Clay, Columbia, Dixie, Duval, Flagler, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Hernando, Jefferson, Lafayette, Lake, Levy, Madison, Marion, Nassau, Putnam, Sumter, St. Johns, Suwannee, Taylor, Union & Volusia counties). It is voted on weekly by sportswriters and sportscasters and it is fueled by Anytime Fitness.

The Prep Zone Power Poll fueled by Anytime Fitness – 2019 Softball Poll #2

anytimefitness_gainesville-300x99Head-to-head match-up solidifies Oakleaf (Orange Park) as the top team in the region

GAINESVILLE – When the top two teams play against one another, it’s typically a good indicator to see how much separation there is between No. 1 and No. 2.

The game between nationally-ranked Oakleaf (Orange Park), the top team in The Prep Zone Power Poll, and #2 Mandarin (Jacksonville), which entered the game unbeaten, didn’t disappoint.

The Knights (12-1) held on to the top spot thanks to a 4-3 win against the Mustangs (12-1) in eight innings.

Oakleaf, ranked 10th in the MaxPreps Xcellent 25 Writers’ Poll, received all seven first-place votes, while Mandarin was a near unanimous selection as the No. 2 team.

However, one 2nd-place vote did go to Bartram Trail (St. Johns), which is tied for third with Trenton in the all-classification regional rankings.

The Class 7A Bears (13-1), who lost 5-3 at Providence (Jacksonville) on March 19, won’t get a chance to face the top-ranked Knights this season. However, Bartram Trail will travel to Class 9A #2 Mandarin next Thursday, April 11.

And don’t let Trenton’s Class 1A status fool you.Oakleaf Knights

The Tigers (13-0) defeated 1A #8 Chiefland last week by a score of 9-0. They have outscored their nine 1A opponents, 110-12. Trenton, which is ranked No. 1 in Class 1A by Miracle Sports, also has wins against Class 7A schools Gainesville & Columbia (Lake City) – both on the road.

Gainesville’s other loss was to Oakleaf in last month’s Tournament of Champions championship game. The Class 7A Hurricanes (12-2) moved up one spot to round out the top five.

There are three undefeated teams remaining.

In addition to No. 3 Trenton, Class 7A Matanzas (Palm Coast) is 12-0, while 5A Eustis is 13-0. They are ranked sixth and eight, respectively, sandwiched around No. 7 East Ridge (Clermont).

Santa Fe (Alachua) and Trinity Christian (Jacksonville), which dropped six spots, round out the top 10 at ninth and 10th, respectively.

Despite the fact that there was some movement, the top 20 remained intact this week.

The Prep Zone Power Poll ranks the top 20 high school football, basketball, baseball & softball teams (regardless of FHSAA classification) across 26 counties in North Florida (Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Citrus, Clay, Columbia, Dixie, Duval, Flagler, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Hernando, Jefferson, Lafayette, Lake, Levy, Madison, Marion, Nassau, Putnam, Sumter, St. Johns, Suwannee, Taylor, Union & Volusia counties). It is voted on weekly by sportswriters and sportscasters and it is fueled by Anytime Fitness.
