Sonic Drive-In Player-of-the-Game for April 30 – Alissa Humphrey (Gainesville)

Sonic-logoThe Sonic Drive-In Player-of-the-Game for Tuesday, April 30, was Alissa Humphrey of the Gainesville softball team.

It was another dominating performance in the circle by Gainesville junior Alissa Humphrey last night in the Class 7A-District 3 Semifinals against Ocala Vanguard.

The JU commit tossed a 1-hitter with 13 strikeouts in a 10-0 win in five innings.

She opened the game with eight consecutive strikeouts and didn’t allow her first hit of the game until there were two outs in the fifth.  She missed a perfect game on a single by YaYa Tyler, who was the only player to reach base for the Knights (3-20).

That snapped a streak of 14 straight batters retired to start the game. She ended the game the way she began it, with a strikeout.

Humphrey was also 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs driven in for GHS (18-7), which will host Middleburg in Thursday’s district championship game.Alissa Humphrey GHS POG 043019

The Broncos upset Columbia (Lake City), 6-4, in the other district semifinal to advance to the postseason for the first time in six years.  It’s also the first time that Columbia won’t be in the playoffs since 2010.

Gainesville won both meetings against the Broncos (11-11) by a total of four runs.  The ‘Canes, ranked 10th in the Class 7A state rankings, are the top seed in the district while Middleburg is the No. 3 seed.

anytimefitness_gainesville-300x99Undefeated Trenton remains #1 in all-classification regional rankings as season heads to district tournaments

GAINESVILLE — The regular season has flown by for high school softball in Florida, and the second season begins this week as district tournaments get underway.

And there remains only one unbeaten team in The Prep Zone Power Poll. That team is at the top of the regional rankings for the second straight poll.

Trenton finished off an unbeaten regular season at 21-0 as the Tigers, ranked #1 in 1A according to the Miracle Sports state softball poll, rallied past #18 Columbia (Lake City), 6-3, after edging #7 Gainesville, 1-0 in 8 innings, earlier in the week.

The Tigers, who had moved to the top spot in the previous poll after an upset of then-#1 and nationally-ranked Oakleaf (Orange Park), receives six of the seven first-place votes and hosts the District 7-1A tournament as the #1 seed starting on Tuesday.

Speaking of Oakleaf, they move back up a spot to 2nd and receive the other first-place vote after wins over then-#18 Keystone Heights and #11 Baker County (Glen St. Mary) following a 2-0 loss at #17 Ridgeview (Orange Park) earlier in the week. The Knights (20-4) are the #1 seed in District 2-8A.

Eustis moves up a spot to 3rd after a 3-0 week that included a 12-0 win at #19 Dunnellon. The Panthers (23-1) have won eight in a row after suffering their only loss, 4-3, to Winter Springs on April 4.Trenton_Tigers

The second five consists of Spruce Creek (Port Orange), Gainesville, Bartram Trail (St. Johns), Hernando (Brooksville) and Matanzas (Palm Coast).

Creekside and Hernando are new to the top ten this week, with Baker County (Glen St. Mary) and East Ridge (Clermont) dropping to the second 10.

Gainesville hoping to ride the arm of Alissa Humphrey to a Class 7A state softball title

Junior Alissa Humphrey was last year's 7A POY
Junior Alissa Humphrey was last year’s 7A POY

If life isn’t throwing you enough curveballs and change ups, travel to Gainesville High School to get your fix.

Alissa Humprey, a 17-year-old softball pitcher for the Gainesville Hurricanes, has you covered.  Humphrey, a junior student-athlete at Gainesville, currently stands as the Hurricanes’ (17-7) leading pitcher with a startling earned-run average of 0.33 and a record of 17-4.

Chris Chronister, now in his third season as Hurricanes head coach, agrees that Humphrey is as dominant as her stats suggest.

“You know when she goes out in the circle that there’s a good chance that we’re not gonna give up more than a run or two in a game,” he said. “Usually no runs.”

For Coach Chronister and the rest of the Hurricanes, Humphrey’s dominance means a chance for the 7A state championship. Gainesville came one game away from the final four during the 2018 season, falling to Niceville High School by a score of 10-3.

Humphrey was the starting pitcher during that game, surrendering all 10 runs, five of them earned. However, this year Humphrey has lowered her ERA by 0.68 runs-per-game, and she says she hates to lose.

“I control most of the game, and I like being in control,” she said. “I’m really competitive. I hate losing, so having the control for the majority of the game is really big for me.”

Humphrey has the killer mentality Coach Chronister stresses more than anything.

“No runs are enough runs,” he said. “You need as many runs as you can get.”

For Chronister, this is how the team will best support Humphrey in the Class 7A-District 3 semifinals against a familiar foe in Vanguard High School (Ocala) on Tuesday, April 30.

Gainesville defeated Vanguard (3-18) at the same stage of the tournament just last year by a score of 4-0. Humphrey was lights-out in the 2018 contest, hurling a no-hit performance while striking out 15 batters.

High strikeout totals are not new for Humphrey, as she averages over 13 K’s for every seven innings pitched this season. She leads all of 7A in strikeouts by 80 K’s with 280 on the season. She is also third in the state of Florida, regardless of class division.

Twenty-six of those strikeouts came in what Humphrey considers to be the best game of her career, a 14 inning bout against nationally-ranked Lakewood Ranch (Bradenton).Gainesville Hurricanes

“The Lakewood Ranch game was pretty impressive,” she said. “I was really proud about that game.”

However, Humphrey’s dominant nature doesn’t mean she isn’t prone to anxiety. She said she was as nervous as ever before the Lakewood performance.

“I was really nervous about that game,” she said. “I knew coming in they were a really strong offensive team. They had a lot of big commits and really strong offensive players.”

The greatest game of Humphrey’s career ended in a 2-0 loss, as the Hurricanes were not able to scratch together a few funs, regardless of the goose eggs Humphrey continued to throw up. The lack of run support may actually stand as more evidence of Humphrey’s
dominance in Coach Chronister’s eyes.

He says the team struggles to put together strong offensive performances with Humprey’s near-promise of a dominant game.

“Sometimes the girls get a little too comfortable with that, and they don’t feel the pressure of needing to score runs. That has caused us some problems this year where our offense seems to be a little stagnant.”

In order to have that effect on a team, Humphrey needs a lot of reps. Coach Chronister says Humphrey spends countless hours of time perfecting her craft outside of practice.

Humphrey says she mostly spends time in the cages improving the spin rate on her pitches. She says she doesn’t practice the location of her pitches as much.

During the summer months, Humphrey stays hot by playing travel ball with the Santa Fe Inferno, a softball organization for girls 18 and under who wish to play competitive softball. The Inferno ball club has been in operation in Alachua County, Florida, since 2007.

Humphrey was named the Sonic Drive-In POG on 3/5

Humphrey says she has played with the Inferno for the past six years.

“We travel the country,” she said. “We’re going to Huntington Beach, Chattanooga and Atlanta. Summer prepares me for the upcoming high school season.”

Being able to stay in shape and practice year-round is why Humphrey and Coach Chronister believe she keeps improving her game.

At the end of her freshman season, Humphrey registered a 1.75 ERA and surrendered a 0.197 batting average to opposing hitters.

During her sophomore campaign, she lowered her ERA to 1.01 and her opponent batting average to 0.130.

Now, heading into the district tournament, Humprey has an aforementioned 0.33 ERA with an opponent batting average of 0.118.

Her stats have improved every year of her high school career.Humphrey’s success has garnered the interest of college scouts, including those
from Jacksonville University. She committed to the university last year.

“Going into eighth-grade summer, they really liked me,” she said. “I started going to camps, and then I finally got the offer at the beginning of my sophomore year.”

Humphrey looks to major in business once she gets to college, but she is not sure what career she wants to pursue once she graduates and hangs up her cleats.

For now, she wants to enjoy the game she loves with her teammates.

Coach Chronister says Humphrey has a good relationship with the players on the team. Chronister chuckled when explaining the team’s chemistry.

“They’re high school girls, so they all have their good days and bad days, but I think as a whole everybody on the team gets along pretty well,” he said.

He says Humphrey is included in that group of great young women.

Pitchers usually form some of their closest relationships with the catchers they play with. Humphrey’s relationship with her catcher, Briana Boggs, is no different.

Boggs, a 16-year-old sophomore, says Humphrey brings a lot of energy to the team.

“She definitely knows how to pump you up and keep you happy all of the time,” said Boggs. “Even when things go wrong she always has a level head.”

Boggs says she brings that same energy as a friend.

“As a friend, she’s really funny,” she said. “She’s really sarcastic. You’ve just gotta laugh it off sometimes.”

All laughing and jokes aside, it’s about wins for Humphrey, Coach Chronister, Boggs and the rest of the team when the tournament rolls around.

While Coach Chronister says winning is a team effort, it’s quite obvious the Hurricanes rely on the right arm of Humphrey.

So far, Humphrey has carried the weight of this reliance.

The only things she’s dropped so far this season are her killer breaking balls.

Sonic Drive-In Player-of-the-Game for April 26 – Cole Howard (Buchholz)

Sonic-logoThe Sonic Drive-In Player-of-the-Game for Friday, April 26, was Cole Howard of the Buchholz (Gainesville) baseball team.

Howard, a senior, picked up his second decision as a relief pitcher in as many nights against city rival Gainesville as the host Bobcats won another thriller, 6-5, over GHS on a walk-off error by the Hurricanes in the bottom of the 7th inning.

Buchholz had won at Gainesville 6-2 on Thursday night on a grand slam by Parker Green in the 8th inning. This time the Bobcats let a big early lead slip away before pulling off the season sweep of the city rival Hurricanes.

Howard entered in the 5th inning in relief of Buchholz starter Caden Kresak with the Bobcats clinging to a 5-4 lead.

The Santa Fe College commit allowed only one hit and an unearned run while striking out three to earn the save. Howard entered in the 7th inning of Thursday night’s game and held the Hurricanes at bay until Green hit his grand slam shot in the 8th to pick up the win in relief.

The Bobcats jumped out to an early lead in the first inning as junior Austin Akey drove in junior Corbin Grantham with an RBI single.

Buchholz added a four-run second inning off Gainesville starter Logan Carlisle. The Bobcats put together four hits around a walk and shole three bases in the inning. Akey had another RBI on a groundout and senior Wesley Avery crushed an RBI double off the fence in left-center and it appeared Buchholz was in control with a 5-0 lead after two innings.

But Carlisle settled down and Gainesville started chipping away.Cole Howard Buchholz POG 042619

The Hurricanes came right back with four runs in the top of the third, all with two outs.

Zeb Marquis brought in the first run on a single down the right field line, then a Kresak throwing error on a pickoff attempt to first base got GHS within 5-2.

Senior Marcos Aular then knocked a two-run homer to straight away center field and the Hurricanes were within one at 5-4.

The score stayed the same all the way until the top of the 7th. With two outs and tying run Luke Matthews at third base, Zeb Marquis hit a ground ball that was booted for an error by the shortstop Akey. Matthews scored as Gainesville tied it 5-5.

The Hurricanes hadn’t committed an error the entire game, but their defense fell apart in the bottom of the 7th.

Dario Astudillo began the inning reaching on a ball hit right in front of the plate as GHS catcher Brian Meert threw wide to 2nd base. Howard then hit a grounder to short that was bobbled and Astudillo beat the throw to second on an attempted force out.

Matt Moss followed with a bunt, and Zeb Marquis, who entered in relief of Carlisle in the sixth inning, tried to force out Astudillo at third but threw the ball down the left field line. Astudillo beat the throw home for the winning run for Buchholz.

The Bobcats won their fifth game in a row and are now 15-8 on the season. They have beaten Gainesville four times in a row and 13 of the last 16. Buchholz closes its regular season with home games next Tuesday against Keystone Heights and Thursday for Senior Night versus Williston.

Gainesville is 11-11 after dropping its third straight game. The Hurricanes have three home games remaining next week against Newberry, Santa Fe (Alachua), and Eastside (Gainesville).

Both teams will host their respective district tournaments the following week.

Every game The Prep Zone will recognize a Player-of-the-Game. The recipient receives a $10 gift certificate courtesy of Sonic Drive-In of Gainesville & Ocala.
