GAINESVILLE (June 6) — The class finalists for the 2018 Florida Dairy Farmers Miss Softball and Softball Coach of the Year have been announced following balloting by a statewide panel of high school softball coaches and prep media representatives.
Every finalist was the leading vote-getter in their classification, making each one the Player of the Year or Coach of the Year in their class. The two overall winners will be announced following a final round of balloting by coaches and media.
Following are the Miss Softball Award finalists (area players/coaches in bold)
Lauren Margolis, Junior, First Baseman, Palmetto, Class 9A Player of the Year
Margolis produced 35 extra-base hits (19 doubles, five triples and 11 home runs) among her 49 hits while posting a .597 batting average with 46 runs scored and 73 runs batted in.
Ashley Worrell, Senior, Pitcher, Hagerty, Class 8A Player of the Year
Worrell, a Rollins College signee, led Hagerty to the state title with a 22-2 record, posting a 1.11 ERA in 157 innings with 119 strikeouts.
Alissa Humphrey, Sophomore, Pitcher, Gainesville, Class 7A Player of the Year
Recorded a state-leading 343 strikeouts while posting a 20-6 record and a 1.01 ERA in 174 innings pitched for her Class 7A regional finalist team.
Ashley Troutman, Junior, Infielder, Arnold, Class 6A Player of the Year
Troutman had a .678 batting average, with nine doubles, six triples and four home runs, scored 59 runs and had 34 runs batted in. She has committed to play college softball at Rollins College.
Emily Estroff, Senior, Pitcher, Coral Springs Charter, Class 5A Player of the Year
The Villanova University signee led her squad to its fourth straight state title by compiling a 28-2 record with a 1.32 ERA and had 201 strikeouts in 148 innings pitched. She also had a .432 batting average.
Victoria Perez, Senior, Pitcher/First Baseman, Westminster Christian, Class 4A Player of the Year
Perez, who repeated as the Class 4A player-of-the-year, hit .512 with 12 doubles, two triples, eight home runs, 35 runs scored and 33 runs batted in. On the mound, she was 11-0 with a 2.38 ERA and 61 strikeouts in 61 innings.
Savannah Farkas, Senior, Pitcher, Northside Christian, Class 3A Player of the Year
Farkas posted a 14-9 record with an 0.68 ERA and had 314 strikeouts with only 16 walks in 143 innings pitched. She also had a .431 batting average.
Lexi Kilfoyl, Junior, Pitcher, Academy at the Lakes, Class 2A Player of the Year
Kilfoyl led her squad to the state title with a 23-1 record and an 0.32 ERA, striking out 249 hitters with only 12 walks in 154 innings pitched. She also hit .482 and had 35 runs batted in.
Brianna Bailey, Senior, Pitcher, Wewahitchka, Class 1A Player of the Year
Led her team to the state title with a 25-1 record, holding opposing hitters to an 0.31 ERA while striking out 282 batters in 157 innings pitched. She also had 29 runs batted in.
Following are the Softball Coach of the Year finalists:
Jeffrey Poole, Western, Class 9A Coach of the Year
In his fourth year at Western, Poole led his squad to a 22-7 record and its first state championship. He has a career record of 80-27 with another Final Four appearance in 2016.
David Stone, Hagerty, Class 8A Coach of the Year
In his seventh year at Hagerty, Stone led his squad to a 27-5 record and the Class 8A state title. His career record at the school is 165-39 with a pair of state runnerup finishes (2014-15).
Tom Fadul, Pembroke Pines Charter, Class 7A Coach of the Year
In his 18th year at PPC, Fadul posted a 26-5 record and won his third state title (2012, 2014). His career mark is 393-100-3 with eight Final Four appearances and four state runnerup finishes.
Marty Cooper, Plantation American Heritage, Class 6A Coach of the Year
Led his program to a 21-8 record, its seventh consecutive Final Four appearance and the school’s eighth state title. In 15 years at American Heritage, Cooper has a 357-72 record and his 28-year career overall mark is 597-148.
Mark Montimurro, Coral Springs Charter, Class 5A Coach of the Year
Montimurro led his team to a 30-2 record and its fourth straight state championship in his sixth year at the school. Montimurro, who won two state titles at Hollywood Christian and was named state coach-of-the-year in 2004, has a 467-108 record during his 20-year career.
Scott Doan, Westminster Christian, Class 4A Coach of the Year
In his 14th year at the school, and 27th year overall, Doan led his squad to a 24-6 record and a second straight state title. He has a 334-85 record with two other state titles (2009 and 2014) plus four other Final Four appearances at Westminster and an overall career mark of 639-163.
Linda Derk, Admiral Farragut, Class 3A Coach of the Year
Derk led her squad to a 19-5 record and the Class 3A state title. In nine years at her school she has posted a 107-57 record with another Final Four appearance in 2016.
Diane Stephenson, Academy at the Lakes, Class 2A Coach of the Year
Stephenson led her team to a 26-4 record and the school’s first state championship. In two years as head coach she has posted a 49-6 record.
Tony Price, Wewahitchka, Class 1A Coach of the Year
In his first year as head coach, the former Wewahitchka assistant led his squad to a 26-4 record and the Class 1A state title after the school’s back-to-back Final Four appearances in 2016-17.
