Gainesville Sun preview:

Who: No. 6 Madison County (19-6) at No. 5 Newberry (16-8)

What: Region 3-1A

What’s next: Newberry would host No. 9 Union County or play at No. 4 Lafayette in Tuesday’s regional finals; Madison County would play at either school.

Extra bases: The host Panthers, District 6 champions (first league title since 2005), are in their first state playoff since 2012 and are looking for their first postseason win since 1997. Newberry, which knocked off two-time defending state champion Williston and state ranked Union County to win the district, have won five straight games, their longest win streak of the season. The Panthers are led by seniors Devon Ross (.415, 8 doubles), Austin Montmarquette (.328, 5 homers, 30 RBIs), Adonis Graham (.311, 6 doubles, 2.90 ERA as pitcher) along with junior Trent Simmons (.390; 5-0 as pitcher, 2.40 ERA). The visiting Cowboys are in their first playoff since 2013 when they play in Class 4A and reached the regional semifinals. This is Madison’s first season in 1A. It had an 8-game win streak snapped in its District 5 final loss at Lafayette (4-2). The Cowboys have two effective pitchers in junior Trey Mitchell (4-1, 0.42 ERA) and senior Alex Tyson (7-1, 1.00 ERA). Tyson has a team-best 21 RBIs. Senior Dillion Burns (.419) has four homers.
