Buchholz keeps postseason hopes alive with a Homecoming win

Published:

Buchholz_BobcatsThe Buchholz (Gainesville) football team picked the perfect time to have its biggest offensive night.

On Homecoming, the Bobcats built an early lead just four minutes into the game and never trailed, scoring early and often, and late, in a 54-23 win against Creekside (St. Johns).

Trent Whittemore threw three TD passes, all in the first half, and the Bobcats had two kickoff returns for scores, as Buchholz (3-4, 1-1) got its first win in Class 7A-District 3.

Whittemore, our Sonic Player of the Game, had a 13-yard TD pass to junior JR Moffatt, and touchdown passes of 43 and 36 yards to junior Isaiah Michel.

Late in the second quarter, Caleb Bowers had a 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to give the Bobcats a 34-13 lead. Whittemore’s 36-yard TD pass to Michel gave Buchholz a 40-16 lead at halftime.

Bobcats’ junior Michael Williams finished off the big night for Buchholz with an 80-yard kickoff return for a TD with :53 left.

The 54 points is the most points in one game in head coach Mark Whittemore’s six seasons, surpassing the 51 points in a 51-0 win against Eastside (Gainesville) last August.

Buchholz travels to Oakleaf (Orange Park) next Friday, then returns home to face district foe Bartram Trail (St. Johns), which is currently ranked 8th in the state.
