Trenton baseball advances to Class 1A state semifinals

Trenton_TigersOn Tuesday night in Polk County, the Trenton baseball team advanced to the Class 1A state semifinals with a 9-2 win at Fort Meade in the regional finals.

Junior Landon Kennedy (7-0) pitched a complete game with six strikeouts and four different players drove in at least one run as the Tigers won their 18th straight game.

Trenton (25-1) scored first in the top of the first when senior Michael Smith reached on an error, then went to third on another error. Smith scored on a ground out by junior Randy Fuller for an early 1-0 lead.

The Tigers extended the lead to 3-0 in the third. Smith picked up an RBI on a SAC fly, and junior Trey Sanchez singled in a run.

The Tigers put the game away in the 5th by scoring four runs and taking a commanding 7-0 lead.

Freshman Wyatt Langford drove in two runs on a base hit to left field and senior Colton Rucker added an RBI single. Langford finished the night with 3 RBI, while Rucker drove in two for the top-ranked Tigers.

Trenton advances to the FHSAA Class 1A state semifinals in Fort Myers against No. 8 Sneads next Wednesday, May 24, at 10 a.m.
