St. Augustine still No. 1 despite week off

GAINESVILLE — Last week was one of the lighter weeks for high school football teams in The Prep Zone Power Poll.

Half of the top 10 teams took the week off, so there wasn’t much change at the top.

St. Augustine (6-0) remained No. 1 in the all-classification regional rankings despite a week off. The Yellow Jackets earned eight of the 11 first-place votes to stay No. 1.

They open up play in District 3-4A on Friday at Clay (Green Cove Springs).

Raines (Jacksonville) is still No. 2.

The Vikings (5-0) rolled rival Ribault (Jacksonville), 53-0, in the annual Northwest Classic on Saturday afternoon in the District 3-3A opener against the Trojans. They received two first-place votes this week.

Buchholz (Gainesville), which moved up to No. 2 overall in the state in the latest FHSAA football rankings, cruised past rival Gainesville, 44-0, and remained at No. 3.

The Bobcats (6-1), who earned the other first-place vote, won their eighth straight city title and beat the Hurricanes for the 7th straight time. They travel to Tocoi Creek (St. Augustine) in a District 3-6A contest this week.

Bolles (Jacksonville) (5-1), which also had the week off, stayed put at No. 4

Rounding out the top five is DeLand.

The Bulldogs (6-0) jumped Spruce Creek (Port Orange) after taking care of another rival in No. 16 Mainland (Daytona Beach), 28-20.

Spruce Creek leads off the second five at No. 6 following a bye week. Nease (Ponte Vedra), Mandarin (Jacksonville), Oakleaf (Orange Park), and Columbia (Lake City) round out the top 10.

Nease and Oakleaf were also off, while Mandarin (6-1) dropped a spot despite a 38-0 romp at Rockledge. Columbia moved up two spots and back into the top after blanking Manatee (Bradenton), 35-0.

Ed White (Jacksonville) returned to the rankings this week. They are tied for 19th with University Christian (Jacksonville).

The only team to fall out from last week’s poll is Madison County, but the Cowboys (2-4) are still receiving votes.

The Prep Zone Power Poll ranks the top 20 high school football, girls basketball, boys basketball, softball & baseball teams (regardless of FHSAA classification) across 26 counties in North Florida (Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Citrus, Clay, Columbia, Dixie, Duval, Flagler, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Hernando, Jefferson, Lafayette, Lake, Levy, Madison, Marion, Nassau, Putnam, Sumter, St. Johns, Suwannee, Taylor, Union & Volusia counties). It is voted on weekly by sportswriters and sportscasters and it is powered by Anytime Fitness of Gainesville.
