Buchholz (Gainesville) stays on top of regional rankings after big win at then-No. 5 Vanguard (Ocala)

GAINESVILLE — Week five of the high school football season saw some of the best action of the year so far.

And in what may have been the game of the year so far in The Prep Zone Power Poll area, the No. 1 Buchholz (Gainesville) Bobcats pulled out a huge 24-21 win at then-No. 5 Vanguard (Ocala) at Booster Stadium last Friday night.

Buchholz senior kicker Reid Rousseau nailed a 37-yard field goal with 14 seconds left to help the Bobcats, ranked fourth in Class 4S by MaxPreps, stay unbeaten at 4-0 and keep them atop the regional all-classification rankings for another week.

Senior quarterback Creed Whittemore, a University of Florida commit, threw for two touchdowns and rushed for another score as the Bobcats received six of the nine first-place votes to remain on top of the power poll for another week.

Vanguard (3-2), which was led by junior quarterback Fred Gaskin, who also threw for two scores and ran for another, dropped two spots to a tie for 7th with Mainland (Daytona Beach) after the loss to Buchholz.

Following Buchholz and remaining No. 2 this week is Trinity Christian (Jacksonville), which is ranked fourth in the state in Class 1M by MaxPreps.

The Conquerors improved to 5-0 as they eased past RV Columbia (Lake City), 43-30. They received the other three first-place votes and now see their schedule settle down a bit with the exception of a district 1-1M championship matchup with No. 5 University Christian (Jacksonville) on October 14.

Class 4S Bartram Trail remained 3rd.

The Bears (5-0) stayed unbeaten by outlasting rival St. Augustine in a 59-37 shootout. It was the fifth consecutive win for Bartram Trail over the Yellow Jackets.

Hawthorne, which is ranked third in Class 1R, remained fourth in the regional rankings after winning its home opener, 46-6, against P.K. Yonge (Gainesville) to stay unbeaten as well at 4-0.

University Christian rounds out the top five. The Class 1M No. 3 Christians (5-0) moved up four spots to No. 5 after taking a seven-hour bus trip north to the Georgia mountains and blasting Rabun Gap-Nacoochee (GA), 49-13.

Bradford (Starke) starts off the second five. The 2S Tornadoes (4-0) are up four spots this week after a 21-7 win over Munroe (Quincy).

Tied with Vanguard for 7th is Mainland (Daytona Beach).

The Bucs (3-1) moved up a slot after handing then-No. 12 Lake Minneola (Minneola) its first loss of the season, 39-26. Lake Minneola (4-1) only dropped two slots to 14th despite the loss.

Rounding out the top 10 is 9th-ranked Raines (Jacksonville) and No. 10 Creekside (St. Johns).

Raines improved to 3-1 by pulling out a tough 20-17 win on the road against then-No. 14T Trinity Catholic (Ocala).

Creekside (4-1) rebounded from its first loss of the season to Buchholz the week before by winning, 37-27, at RV Mandarin (Jacksonville).

New to the rankings this week are No. 15 South Sumter (Bushnell), which moved to 5-0 with a 42-10 trouncing of Mitchell (New Port Richey), and Union County (Lake Butler), which moves back in at No. 20 after blasting previously undefeated Newberry on the road, 45-0.

The Class 1R No. 2 Tigers were ranked in the preseason poll before losing in week one at University Christian.

Dropping out from last week are Madison County, which fell to 2-3 after a 21-6 loss at Florida High (Tallahassee), and Oakleaf (Orange Park), which followed up an upset win at No. 12 Fleming Island (Orange Park) the previous week by losing at previously winless Chiles (Tallahassee).

The Prep Zone Power Poll ranks the top 20 high school football, girls basketball, boys basketball, softball & baseball teams (regardless of FHSAA classification) across 26 counties in North Florida (Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Citrus, Clay, Columbia, Dixie, Duval, Flagler, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Hernando, Jefferson, Lafayette, Lake, Levy, Madison, Marion, Nassau, Putnam, Sumter, St. Johns, Suwannee, Taylor, Union & Volusia counties).
