No change in top 10 of regional rankings as Mainland (Daytona Beach) remains unanimous No. 1
GAINESVILLE — Week six of high school football in the Prep Zone area was one of the most predictable in recent years.
Every team in the top 20 of last week’s rankings either won or had a bye last week, so there was very little movement in the Prep Zone Power Poll.
No change at the top as Mainland (Daytona Beach) is once again the unanimous #1 team this week.
The Bucs (6-0) easily dispatched of District 13-6A rival Deltona 35-0 and received all 10 first-place votes to stay #1 for the seventh straight week.
Mainland was scheduled for a showdown with 4A powerhouse Cocoa this Friday, but that game has now been canceled due to impending Hurricane Matthew.
Vanguard (Ocala) remains 2nd after easily winning their District 5-6A opener 51-0 at Leesburg. The Knights (5-0) have a bye this week before facing another district rival, Gainesville, on October 14.
Bolles (Jacksonville) remains 3rd after walloping District 2-4A rival West Nassau (Callahan), 47-0. The win improved the Bulldogs to 5-0 and they are scheduled for a tough non-district road trip to 7A Columbia (Lake City) this week.
Trinity Christian (Jacksonville) moves up one spot from fifth to fourth. The Conquerors (3-2) opened District 2-3A play with a 56-13 win at Providence (Jacksonville). Trinity Christian hosts 5A Godby (Tallahassee) for their week 7 game on Thursday.
Raines (Jacksonville) was off last week but dropped one spot and remains in the top five. The Vikings (4-0) travel right up the road on the Northside to rival First Coast (Jacksonville) this week.
Leading off the second five is Sandalwood (Jacksonville). The Saints (5-0) switched spots with District 1-8A rival Mandarin (Jacksonville) after Sandalwood easily won, 34-6, at district foe Flagler Palm Coast.
Mandarin falls to 7th after a bye last week. The Mustangs (4-0) are back in action on Monday, due to Hurricane Matthew, in a non-district game as they host Wolfson (Jacksonville).
Dunnellon (5-0) remained eighth following a 48-32 District 4-4A win at Mount Dora. The Tigers (5-0) are off this week.
Madison County also remains 9th after rolling, 62-6, against District 5-1A opponent Jefferson County (Monticello). The Cowboys (5-0) have another district game this Friday at Hamilton County (Jasper).
Rounding out the top 10 is Ponte Vedra. The Sharks (5-0) easily knocked off District 4-5A foe Westside (Jacksonville), 53-16. If the weather holds, Ponte Vedra is scheduled to travel to St. Johns County rival #18 Bartram Trail (St. Johns) for week 7.
As for the second 10, some teams moved around from last week’s poll but the only squad to make a move into the rankings this week was Fletcher (Neptune Beach) at No. 20. The Senators (6-0) easily handled District 2-7A opponent First Coast, 28-0, a week ago. This week Fletcher hosts Ribault (Jacksonville), a 5A team which once again is receiving votes this week.
Fletcher replaces Matanzas (Palm Coast), which had to beat New Smyrna Beach on Monday, 58-28, after inclement weather forced the Pirates’ game to be moved.
The Prep Zone Power Poll ranks the top 20 high school football, basketball, baseball & softball teams (regardless of FHSAA classification) across 26 counties in North Central Florida (Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Citrus, Clay, Columbia, Dixie, Duval, Flagler, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Hernando, Jefferson, Lafayette, Lake, Levy, Madison, Marion, Nassau, Putnam, Sumter, St. Johns, Suwannee, Taylor, Union & Volusia counties). It is voted on weekly by sportswriters and sportscasters. It is powered by Anytime Fitness of Gainesville.
