Our Sonic Player-of-the-game for Thursday, Oct. 12, is Trent Whittemore of the Buchholz (Gainesville) football team.
The junior threw three first-half TDs as the Bobcats kept their postseason hopes alive with a rout of Creekside (St. Johns), 54-23, on Homecoming. It was the first Class 7A-District 3 win of the season for the Bobcats (3-4, 1-1).
Whittemore’s first TD pass of the night, a 13-yard pass to junior JR Moffatt, gave Buchholz a 13-0 lead in a game they never trailed.
His second TD pass, from 43 yards out to junior Isaiah Michel, gave the Bobcats a 20-7 lead early in the second quarter.
Then, his final TD pass of the night, a 36-yard scoring toss to Michel with :17 left in the half, gave Buchholz a commanding 40-16 lead at the break.
The University of Florida commit completed 7-of-8 for 140 yards in the opening half.
Buchholz travels to Oakleaf (Orange Park) next Friday, then returns home for a match-up against state-ranked Bartram Trail (St. Johns) on Oct. 27 with a chance to clinch a postseason spot.
Every game The Prep Zone will recognize a Sonic Player-of-the-Game. The recipient receives a $10 gift card & certificate courtesy of Sonic Drive-In of Gainesville & Ocala.
