Sonic Player-of-the-Game (Nov. 28) – Israel Wilcox (P.K. Yonge)

Published:

Sonic-logoOur Sonic-Player-of-the-Game for Tuesday, November 28, is Israel Wilcox of the P.K. Yonge (Gainesville) boys’ basketball team.

Wilcox came up big in the second half as P.K. Yonge defeated rival Gainesville, 47-42.

The junior scored all 11 of his points in the second half, but it was his knack for ball control at the point and getting to the free throw line that proved to be the difference after the Blue Wave let a 17-point halftime lead evaporate late in the fourth quarter.

Wilcox made 9-of-12 free throws, including four in the final quarter.

Senior Will Banks carried P.K. Yonge early, scoring 14 of his game-high 17 points in the opening half.  He had half of the Blue Wave’s points at the break as P.K. Yonge led 28-11.

But Banks was held scoreless in the fourth quarter.  In fact, Wilcox had the only field goal in the final eight minutes as P.K. Yonge held on for the victory, snapping a 2-game losing streak to the Hurricanes (0-1).

P.K. Yonge (1-1) will host Class 8A state runner-up Lincoln (Tallahassee) on Friday, Dec. 1.

Every game The Prep Zone will recognize a Sonic Player-of-the-Game. The recipient receives a $10 gift card & certificate courtesy of Sonic Drive-In of Gainesville & Ocala.
