The Sonic Drive-In Player-of-the-Game for Saturday, Dec. 10, was Zion Johnson of the Hawthorne football team.

Johnson had a key interception in the second half to help lead the Hornets to a 13-2 win against Northview (Bratt) in the Class 1R state championship game.

The sophomore, who received an offer from Florida A&M after the game, had a 44-yard interception return down to the Chiefs’ 1-yard line. Quarterback C.J. Ingram snuck it in on the next play for a 13-2 lead with 5:26 to play in the third quarter.

“(Defensive coordinator) Coach Adkins told me it was coming,” said Johnson, who received an offer to Florida A&M after the game. “He was telling us to switch and make sure we communicated on that play. He already knew it was coming. He just put me in a position to make a good play.”

It was the first state football title for the Hornets (12-0) in school history.
