The Sonic Drive-In Player-of-the-Game for Thursday, March 4, was Dontrell Jenkins of the Santa Fe (Alachua) boys’ basketball team.
Jenkins scored a team-high 22 points as Santa Fe defeated West Nassau (Callahan), 64-63, in the Class 4A state semifinals at the RP Funding Center in Lakeland.
But it was a late pass that proved to be the game-winner.
Senior Willie Lewis scored on a layup with three seconds to play, on an assist from Jenkins, to advance the Raiders to Saturday’s state championship game.
“(My coach says) trust in my players,” Jenkins said. “Always give it (the ball) up.”
Santa Fe will play Pine Crest (Fort Lauderdale) at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday in the Class 4A state championship game. Pine Crest (20-1) defeated Astronaut (Titusville), 68-47, in the other state semifinal.
Every game The Prep Zone will recognize a Player-of-the-Game. The recipient receives a $10 gift certificate courtesy of Sonic Drive-In of Gainesville & Ocala.
