Gainey scored a game-high 18 points as Eastside snapped a 7-game losing streak to county rival Hawthorne with a 43-38 win.

The junior, who transferred from Trinity Catholic (Ocala), kept the Rams in it early as leading scorer KJ Bradley was held to just one point in the first half.

Gainey scored five in the first quarter as Eastside took a 13-8. He added five in the second quarter as Eastside led 18-14 at the half.

“It’s a big win because we’ve been talking about playing them and they’ve been talking about playing us,” said Gainey. “There’s been rumors going around saying they were going to beat us by like 20 and stuff like that, so we just came out ready to play, and played hard.”

Gainey’s consistent play helped Eastside beat Hawthorne, which was ranked 2nd in Class 1A, for the first time since 2009. The Rams had won seven in a row from 2005-2009.

Eastside (12-7) will host P.K. Yonge on Tuesday.  The game will be video broadcast on the Eastside Athletics Facebook page and also air on local radio (92.1 FM & 1230 AM in Gainesville).

The Hornets (17-3), who were playing without leading scorer Torey Buie (concussion vs. NFEI), will play at P.K. Yonge on Thursday.

Every game The Prep Zone will recognize a Player-of-the-Game. The recipient receives a $10 gift certificate courtesy of Sonic Drive-In of Gainesville & Ocala.
