Our Sonic Drive-In-Player-of-the-Game for Friday, February 9, is Christian Miller-Cardwell of the Gainesville boys’ basketball team.
In his final game against rival Eastside, the senior didn’t disappoint.
Miller-Cardwell scored a game-high 21 points as Gainesville defeated Eastside, 61-52, to split the regular season series against the Rams. The senior was consistent throughout, scoring at least five points in each quarter.
The senior scored five points in the first quarter as the Hurricanes built a 17-9 lead after the first quarter. He added five more in the second quarter, including his second shot behind the arc, as the ‘Canes extended it to a 33-20 lead at the half.
Miller-Cardwell scored 11 of his 21 in the second half as GHS (20-5) secured its fourth consecutive 20-win season. It was the sixth consecutive victory for the ‘Canes and their 10th in the past 11 games.
Gainesville will host next week’s Class 7A-District 4 tournament as the No. 1 seed after finishing 8-0 in league play this season. GHS will play in the district semifinals on Wednesday against the winner of Tuesday night’s game between Forest (Ocala) and Lake Weir (Ocala).
Eastside (20-5) will play in the Class 6A-District 6 semifinals as the No. 2 seed against #3 Santa Fe (Alachua) on Tuesday at North Marion. The Rams tied North Marion at 7-1 in the district, but the Colts won the coin toss to secure the top seed.
