Prep Zone Power Poll – 2014 Softball Poll – Week 5

Ponte VedraGainesville – The race for No. 1 remains close in the softball Prep Zone Power Poll.

Top-ranked Ponte Vedra, ranked No. 1 in the 5A state poll and No. 5 in the country in the MaxPrep Xcellent 25, had wins against No. 15 Clay & No. 11 Bartram Trail last week.  But the Sharks (21-0) collected only three of the seven first-place votes.

The other four first-place votes went to No. 2 Columbia (Lake City), which is ranked No. 1 in Class 6A and No. 18 in the Xcellent 25 poll.  The Tigers (20-1) went 5-0 at the prestigious Kissimmee Klassic and moved up one spot to second.  There, they defeated 7A #1 St. Thomas Aquinas (Ft. Lauderdale), 7A #2 Harmony and 8A #4 Cooper City.

Ponte Vedra edged Columbia in total voting points, 136-135, to remain on top.

Class 4A P.K. Yonge (Gainesville) suffered its first defeats of the season, but the Blue Wave (17-2) remained third.  They went 2-2 at the Kissimmee Klassic with wins against 2A #1 Canterbury (St. Pete) and 7A #5 Niceville, but losses to 7A #3 Tate (Cantonment) & 4A No. 3 Gulliver Prep (Miami), who they could end up facing in this year’s state title game.

Forest (Ocala) won the silver championship of the Rattlers’ Division at Belleview.  The Wildcats (19-2) moved up one spot to fourth in this week’s poll.

Class 5A Hernando moved up two spots to fifth.  The Leopards (20-1) have won 13 in a row since their only loss to No. 8 Nature Coast (Brooksville), 5-4.

Bradford (Starke) made the biggest drop as the Tornadoes (13-7) tumbled eight spots following a 0-4 record at the Kissimmee Klassic, while Belleview (18-4) made one of the biggest jumps, up four spots to No. 7 after a 5-0 week, including a 4-0 record to win the gold championship of the Diamondback Division at the Doc 4 Life Showdown.

The Prep Zone Power Poll ranks the top 20 high school football, basketball, baseball & softball teams (regardless of FHSAA classification) across 26 counties in North Florida (Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Citrus, Clay, Columbia, Dixie, Duval, Flagler, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Hernando, Jefferson, Lafayette, Lake, Levy, Madison, Marion, Nassau, Putnam, Sumter, St. Johns, Suwannee, Taylor, Union & Volusia counties). It is voted on weekly by sportswriters and sportscasters.
