Mainland (Daytona Beach) remains on top

Gainesville – Two state championship hopefuls top this week’s Prep Zone Power Poll.

Mainland (Daytona Beach) remained No. 1 following a 63-0 win over Pine Ridge (Deltona) in a Class 6A-District 9 game. The Bucs (4-0), who advanced to the state semifinals last year, have outscored their opponents, 199-9. They received seven of the nine first-place votes.

Defending 3A state champion Trinity Christian (Jacksonville) remained second and inched their way closer to the top after knocking off previously unbeaten and No. 15 Madison County, which dropped five spots to 20th following a 42-7 loss. It was the second straight win for the Conquerors (2-1), who received the other two first-place votes.

First Coast (Jacksonville), which was off, remained third. The Bucs (3-0) have wins against No. 6 Fletcher (Neptune Beach) and RV Raines (Jacksonville), which surprised No. 5 Bolles (Jacksonville) in a Class 4A-District 3 game, 34-33, on a Vikings’ touchdown with 41 seconds to play. Last year the ‘Dogs (3-1), who tumbled five spots to 10th, advanced to the 4A state title game as a district runner-up.

South Sumter (Bushnell) remained fourth. The Raiders (4-0) defeated previously unbeaten Zephyrhills, 40-10, to extend their regular season winning streak to 27 games.

Class 5A state runners-up Clay (Green Cove Springs) moved into the top five following a 48-37 win over Ponte Vedra. The Blue Devils (4-0) rushed for over 400 yards in the game.

Following Fletcher (2-1) in the second five is St. Augustine (4-0) at No. 7, Trinity Catholic (Ocala) at No. 8, Columbia (Lake City) at No. 9 and Bolles, which rounds out the top 10.

Dixie County (Cross City), which is ranked 11th, leads three Class 1A teams in the rankings as Union County (Lake Butler) and Trenton are ranked 15th and 16th, respectively.

Flagler Palm Coast joins the poll for the first time following a 42-14 win against RV Sandalwood (Jacksonville) in a Class 8A-District 1 game.
